According to @SexMattersOrg on Twitter the Govt have backed down on the MOMA (Maternity) Bill and will now use the word 'mother' not 'person' in the legislation!

Women did this! We are winning!

What an amazing day, an amazing thread! I’ve been battling to do a work task today- juggling homeschooling this morning then taking the dog to the vet. Was going to really get my nose to the grindstone and then I saw this... got distracted and emotional! So excited to be heard, to be vindicated and to have some hope that women’s rights are not going to be eroded stealthily and perniciously.
Thank you to all the posters on this board who’ve been working so hard for so long (I’m a relative newcomer) and thank you to all the fantastic men and women in the House of Lords today. I wrote to my MP earlier today to give him a kick up the arse about his ineffectual reply to my email about schools and Stonewall, and asked him to read the transcripts of today’s debate. I hope he does.
I’ll also write to a few of the Peers who did such sterling work today and thank them.

Wine Cheers!

HoC went all in in 2018:

www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/offices/commons/media-relations-group/news/house-of-commons-proud-to-join-trans-ally-scheme/

Luckily HoL need not.

Janaih · 25/02/2021 22:38

Thankyou everyone 💓 thankyou biological facts.

NiceGerbil · 25/02/2021 22:40

Sophocles I don't think there will be changing minds amongst those who have spoken out.

The actions that have been taken (getting rid of life long activist feminists who were GC, all women short lists etc) and the things that have been said - were so strong -that I can't see how they could.

Also the lords can't be sacked/ voted out so they are freer to speak their minds.

All of this debacle has been a real eduction for me.

As a life long lefty to see the likes of labour/ greens and the lib Dems to a certain extent, turn on ordinary women, so quickly and so completely was a shock.

And to suddenly be on the 'wrong' side, where believing that women are an actual thing not an idea in a man's head makes me akin to a racist, homophobe, Nazi.

To see the bias in the BBC and elsewhere. The woman's hour debacle.

It's a weird position to be in but has made me grow in terms of, listen to everyone, hear their arguments, see why they would say that. Not stick your fingers in your ears and dismiss automatically.

That none of us can take anything for granted. What you have can be lost in an instant.

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 25/02/2021 22:41

Good people literally standing up and being prepared to be counted.

This is what it takes. Hugely grateful to the peers who spoke up for women today and to the good people working behind the scenes.

ScoobyCat · 25/02/2021 22:43

Thank you to every single person who stood up and spoke on behalf of women and girls today, with a special mention for Baroness Nicholson who has consistently spoke for women’s rights and supported women to speak out, and thank you to everyone who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring the debate together.

Thank you to Joanne Rowling, Martina Navratilova, Sharon Davies, Linda Bellos, Maya Forstater, Alison Bailey, and every other woman who has stood up for women and girls.

Thank you to @MNHQ for hosting the FWR board.

And most of all thank you, wonderful women of FWR - you have kept the conversations going, shone sunlight where it was needed, and helped educate and support women.

You are all amazing Flowers

FlibbertyGiblets · 25/02/2021 22:44

Well done HoL, I am really Very Happy with this outcome. Thank you.

ArabellaScott · 25/02/2021 22:44

Sophocles I don't think there will be changing minds amongst those who have spoken out.

We all know that this only goes in one direction. The cognitive dissonance, once undone, can't be redissonanced.

Delighted to see the Baroness' tweet 'we've only just got started'. Grin

Thank you all, if you are here, and thank you vipers of Mumsnet for all you do. Amazing.

Away to buy a bumper pack of fancy thank you cards for the peers. We'll need some better biscuits if they're stopping. Probably Cake

RubyViolet · 25/02/2021 22:46

Well done everyone.

NiceGerbil · 25/02/2021 22:52

Everything scooby said.

I was telling DH about all this and wondering out loud why and how we seem to be the only country (as far as I know) pushing back and making some headway.

I came to the conclusion it was because of MN. Thank you @MNHQ.

I've been here for 14 years now. I was here when fwr was created. I've seen this topic slowly growing in posts and concern for about 6 or 7 years maybe. The ability to discuss it with other women has been key.

Mumsnet could have pulled the plug. It wouldn't have cost them much. I dread to think the sort of threats Justine etc get. The DDOS attacks. The slandering of the site by so many people.

So yes thank you vv much Justine and everyone else Smile

Erkrie · 25/02/2021 22:53

Delighted to see the Baroness' tweet 'we've only just got started

Just saw that. She is fabulous.

saltandsugar · 25/02/2021 22:54

Thank you everyone and thank you Mumsnet.
I don't post much - but I strongly believe in everything the FWR board is trying to achieve

womaninatightspot · 25/02/2021 22:55

So grateful to the peers who stood up today. I've always been a bit dismissive of the HoL but now I am a serious fan.

Cailleach1 · 25/02/2021 22:57

That was absolutely amazing. Humanity and reality rather than newspeak mantras.

Winesalot · 25/02/2021 22:57

What a week!!! Thank you so much to each and everyone who spoke up for women. And I echo those making special mention of the work of Baroness Nicholson. Thank you Baroness for consistently working to improve the lives of women and children.

Mumfun · 25/02/2021 22:59

Thanks to all the Lords who spoke for us today. It was just so great to hear such common sense from such a distinguished and knowledgeable group with such common sense. Thanks to Baroness Nicholson for her amazing bringing together of such an effective cross party group. And thanks to Lord Hunt for really getting it and laying down such great markers in Hansard. And thanks to him also for supporting Rosie Duffield. I really worry about her as the Labour party overall have been appalling to her and she deserves widespread support for speaking common sense just like the Lords. It felt like a good day today. Heres to many more :)

AbsintheFriends · 25/02/2021 23:01

As gender critical feminists we are always trying to smash stereotypes, and it strikes me that the peers who spoke up for us today have provided a perfect example of that.

A few years ago I would have been too naïve and narrow-minded to consider that men like Lords Hunt, Winston, Lucas, Forsyth etc would be braver and stronger feminist allies than the beardy hipsters and leftie woke-bros who loudly self-identify as progressive even as they're talking over women and shoving us under the bus.

Heartfelt thanks to all those men and women peers who listened to women and showed huge courage and integrity in speaking up for us.

Mrsbrownsgargoyle · 25/02/2021 23:04

Thank you, Lords and Ladies. My heart is full tonight and I'm so proud of you.

Cailleach1 · 25/02/2021 23:04

Sex as a protected characteristic in law was the big impediment. It was more difficult to tackle.

RozWatching · 25/02/2021 23:08

Thank you for this amazing thread. Some sanity and courage at last!
Couldn't watch today but will catch up tomorrow. How many thank you cards do I need?!
I'm elated, but why do these attempts to erase women through government channels keep happening? What an obnoxious waste of everyone's time, including the parliament's!

Here's to the FWR coven and everyone involved in today's win Wine

Floisme · 25/02/2021 23:11

OMG I had no idea this had been happening, why didn't I know?
How wonderful.

I've not worked out who I need to thank yet but I assume Baroness Nicholson is one of them, and Lord Phil of Brum.

And I imagine FWR has played a part too. Nice work Vipers.

Olderstyle1 · 25/02/2021 23:15

We'd better check the sherry in advance to make sure it's up to the lordships/ladyships/personships standard gardenbird. Not that I'm casting aspersions on your classiness you understand.

I've found my Auntie Bessie's sherry glass and given it a dusting.

LetMeBubble · 25/02/2021 23:15

Wow this is frightening..

The fight is real !

Fishdoggy · 25/02/2021 23:21

Catching up after work. In floods of tears here, relief and gratitude. Those wonderful Lords and Baronesses were listening. They heard us and are prepared to stand up and speak so eloquently for our name, Woman, and our Rights. I would happily hug each and every one of them who supports women right now. I can't express how thankful I am.

Erkrie · 25/02/2021 23:24

The fight is real

Yes.
