According to @SexMattersOrg on Twitter the Govt have backed down on the MOMA (Maternity) Bill and will now use the word 'mother' not 'person' in the legislation!

Women did this! We are winning!

@RevIMJolly

It’s like the grown ups have finally entered the room. I never thought I would say that about the House of Lords.
Yes saved by the common sense of the House of Lords....what a relief.
RavingAnnie · 25/02/2021 23:28

@cheeseismydownfall

"For a group to be properly protected by the law, they must be properly identified in the law"
This hits the nail on the head for me.
JemimaShore · 25/02/2021 23:29

Haven't posted on MN or FWR for months now - but wanted to jump back on to say how amazing it was to hear clear, concise language in the House of Lords today. For the rights of women, mothers, free speech.

Thank you thank you thank you

Amazing that we have this House, where a common-sense (non party-whipped) representative can speak freely and within their conscience to enact real change.

Feminists have been waiting for this for years. Bravo.

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 25/02/2021 23:30

@BattyOrange

I agree cheese I've often wondered what was the point of a bunch of unelected peers having a say in our laws etc. but now I see that they can consider and comment without fear of deselection or losing the public vote so they're free to challenge.
Yes...they can say what they really think and they have life experience on their side...in the main.
Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 25/02/2021 23:32

Trying to explain to my kids why I was crying because the HoL thinks mother’s have babies was pretty tricky Grin

RedDogsBeg · 25/02/2021 23:35

@greatpurplepolkadots

Oh my goodness Lord Hunt just linked to this thread on Twitter!

Long time lurker here, I am so happy this thread exists and for what happened today. Hopefully today is just the beginning!

Supersimkin2 · 25/02/2021 23:50

Who'd have thought in 2021 we in the West would have to wage war to use the word woman?

Thank you Lord Hunt.
Thank you Baroness Nicholson.
Thank you Lord Winston et al*

Thank you thank you thank to J KRowling to drawing attention to this issue to a wider audience.

This. A good day for freedom of speech and human rights.

@Sunkisses

"This is the ideology of the madhouse. It is a plain fact of human existance that only women get pregnant" - Baroness Meyer (Conservative)
Wow. Can't believe I'm applauding a Tory, but thank you, Baroness Meyer, for saying the bleedin' obvious. I love your no-nonsense approach.

It's brilliant news.

talesofginza · 26/02/2021 00:02

So wonderful to see so many in the HoL speak eloquently and with broad and deep understanding of these issues and why they are so important to women. Thank you all so much! Flowers

I really hope this is just the beginning of larger, grown-up debates in Parliament about all the issues raised.

toomanybooksstillbuying · 26/02/2021 00:07

Thank you to those in the HoL for sticking up for women.. thank you also mumsnet-ers for keeping me sane through all this x

GAHgamel · 26/02/2021 00:11

@BoreOfWhabylon

Rather surprised that mimmymum hasn't renamed herself mimmybirthingparent
Just spat my drink at that.
Melroses · 26/02/2021 00:13

It has been quite a day.

Thank you everyone in HoL Flowers

Yes to this.
MiddlesexGirl · 26/02/2021 00:19

It's on the BBC Top stories now.
Not quite in the stories viewable without scrolling but at least it's there.
Would there be an algorithm that puts it higher according to clicks?
Fwiw I like the headline. It's a crazy concept that pregnant women wouldn't be called mothers so it will encourage people to read the article.

Waspnest · 26/02/2021 00:21

Absolutely brilliant news.

Oh god am I going to have to revise my view of the HoL?

Rather surprised that mimmymum hasn't renamed herself mimmybirthingparent

Grin

Has Glinner commented yet?

JemimaShore · 26/02/2021 00:27

Well according to Mimmymum, the amendments only passed because of "vindictive spite of a small number of Lords."

Whereas I saw a common-sense consensus not to erase the word woman or mother. Thank you, House of Lords.

She's begging Michael Cashman to come to the rescue - too bad love, he's not remotely interested in such mundane things as maternity law. He was off doing much more glam things.

Worth remembering that Mimmymum maliciously took transsexual Miranda Yardley to court, o rubbished harassment charges which were promptly thrown out of court.

But "she's* the one who cares about trans rights, apparently! Hands up anyone here who's dragged a transsexual to court? No-one?? Thought not.

Mollyollydolly · 26/02/2021 00:29

I hope Rosie Duffield sleeps well tonight. I have really felt for her. I suspect some of her colleagues will find it hard to look her in the eye after this week. And now it's in Hansard forever what happened. Wonderful.
