According to @SexMattersOrg on Twitter the Govt have backed down on the MOMA (Maternity) Bill and will now use the word 'mother' not 'person' in the legislation!

Women did this! We are winning!

@LouHotel

I'm astonished their close to hitting every major issue brought up in the last few years and it's going to be all there in parliamentary record to hold lawmakers to account for decades.
This.

This can't be happening by accident, can it? This feels like the explosive launch of a carefully coordinated long term plan.

Baroness Deech brilliant

persistentwoman · 25/02/2021 16:42

Pleased to see so much awareness of the needs of women with English as a second language.
Excellent speech from Baroness Ruth Deech

Wonderful news! Thanks for sharing. Smile

I cant watch it live but reading the thread and updates has me a little teary.

Women, you lot, made this happen. We're fucking immense Grin.

Everyone who has explained, debated, wrote letters, emailed... Thankyou Flowers

MutteringDarkly · 25/02/2021 16:43

I'm especially enjoying the suggestion of "persons with prostates" as being equally mad Grin

Sunkisses · 25/02/2021 16:44

Baroness Deech talking about the McConnell case but using the word "he". It makes her argument completely confusing. If she used the correct word "she" we would all clearly know what she is talking about. This is especially bizarre in a Lords debate about the importance of using the CORRECT language.

As an American I could absolutely weep at the contrast and may yet. Today the US House will pass the so-called "Equality Act," obliterating sex as a protected characteristic in favor of self-declared gender identity.

Well done UK sisters who have organized so effectively and kept the pressure on your representatives. It's not over by a long shot, but you will win in the end.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 25/02/2021 16:44

I cannot WAIT to read the transcript of this. I can’t watch so the updates on this thread are brilliant in the meantime,

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 25/02/2021 16:44

Bloody hell, Freddie is getting name checked again by Baroness Deech (Crossbench). Pointed out that Freddie started IVF 6 days after getting a GRC and declaring their wish to live a a man until death.

ScoldsBridle · 25/02/2021 16:44

I missed the first hour but it’s still going and it’s bloody brilliant. I can’t tear myself away.

It’s totally insane that we’re rejoicing over hearing this. But God am I savouring it. The day started so badly hearing about the North Lanarkshire Women’s Aid’s refuges losing their funding. The total appalling result of fucking around with language and shoe-horning gender identity into policy.

But I’m enjoying this. This is important. It needs to permeate throughout the corridors of that entire building.

highame · 25/02/2021 16:44

So much is being covered. Not just this bill, but they are making sure they get everything in there. It is just wonderful

MarshaBradyo · 25/02/2021 16:44

The outpouring is immense

The speeches are so good

I just listened whilst picking up dd, felt there was a better future for her due to this

SantaNameChange · 25/02/2021 16:45

I commend these amendments to 'your persons house' from Baroness Deech. She's good!

And also mentioned demeaning language - menstruators etc

persistentwoman · 25/02/2021 16:45

Baroness Deech chaired the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority - she knows her stuff!

Sunkisses · 25/02/2021 16:45

"I have been inspired by the speeches today" - Lord Dobbs (Conservative)

You are not the only one!

Walkingtheplank · 25/02/2021 16:46

I liked the placing of a little Ruth Bader Ginsburg behind Baroness Deech

Sunkisses · 25/02/2021 16:46

"This has been a very good day for the House of Lords, but an even better one for women" - Lord Dobbs (Conservative)

Wow, this thread! How marvellous!

Peter Lilley was a local MP where I grew up. Never had much time for him (I was young and he was just old white Tory) but on this issue it's clear he has a brain. I'm so glad that I no longer believe all Labour are good and all Tories are bad.

Spiegelx · 25/02/2021 16:49

I could listen to Lord Winston all day

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 25/02/2021 16:49

Sal Brinton is a better speaker than I expected.

Shame she is missing the points though. But, she's doing it elegantly.

SantaNameChange · 25/02/2021 16:49

Labour, Tory and Independents all speaking sense, but Lib Dems are completely out on their own. Baroness Brinton now - supporting Freddie McConnell.

Hulo · 25/02/2021 16:49

Wow. The Liberal Democrats are useles. They really don't care about women and swallow every nonsense trope out there

Sunkisses · 25/02/2021 16:49

"I could not support langauge that excludes women, but I do not think this is the case here" - Baroness Brinton (Lib Dem)
