According to @SexMattersOrg on Twitter the Govt have backed down on the MOMA (Maternity) Bill and will now use the word 'mother' not 'person' in the legislation!

Women did this! We are winning!

Tune in live here at 2.30pm to see history in the making: www.parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/3ca1efa2-16a5-489d-a5a0-5d929bff81f6

I remember the time the Lords kicked out a harsh cut to child tax credits as well- think that was in the era of Osborne...remember thinking then similarly thank goodness for them then as well

OwBist · 25/02/2021 16:49

I get the feeling that so many of them are so passionate about this (thankfully!), that behind the scenes may be a bit more Malcolm Tucker than Sir Humphrey this evening..... I'm so pleased that finally, people in authority who cannot be cancelled by some anime account on twitter are stating why this matters. And so clearly.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 25/02/2021 16:49

Maybe they should say "males cannot get pregnant" instead of "men" in law.

tootyfruitypickle · 25/02/2021 16:49

Never ever voting Lib Dem again. What a loon.

NecessaryScene1 · 25/02/2021 16:50

As an American I could absolutely weep at the contrast and may yet.

There was one Lib Dem there talking like a US Democrat, ranting about dodgy dossiers produced by the "alt-right". Almost expected her to start going on about Russian interference, to be honest.

(Jane Clare Jones is fucking furious).

It's a total cross-party coalition, all sounding like sane British people, apart from the Lib Dems. The other Lib Dems speaking and not on board at least didn't sound totally insane/American. (Sorry, I know, not all Americans Wink)

One Lib Dem was saying effectively saying that women shouldn't be fighting this as we don't want US-style culture wars. Hmm

Sunkisses · 25/02/2021 16:50

"It is factually incorrect, as has been referred to here today, that only women can become pregnant" - Baroness Brinton (Lib Dem)

Much bringing in of 'Intersex' by Sal Brinton - apparently affected by the word mother.

We could do with a few definitions here.

Orangeblossom1977 · 25/02/2021 16:50

persons with prostates Grin

lalafafa · 25/02/2021 16:50

could someone who knows, draft something we could all sign to them?

Biscuitsanddoombar · 25/02/2021 16:51

Bloody hell! This is a co ordinated planned effort thats clearly taken a lot of behind the scenes work by Baroness N and company

Deliberate tactic to get so much into Hansard and to lay down so many markers across the issue

BaronessWrongCrowd · 25/02/2021 16:51

The Lib-Dem have lost the plot.

highame · 25/02/2021 16:51

Baroness Brinton has definitely drunk the kool aid

Highwind · 25/02/2021 16:51

Would like to echo thanks to the summaries of the speeches, I was only able to watch up to Lord Winston before my work break was over.

So I am now reading this and excitedly jumping up and down at my desk!

Cannot wait to watch the whole thing when I get home... wait... am I seriously excited about watching a parliamentary debate? I am either getting old or didn't realize just how much I need to see and hear someone in power acknowledge what we have seen going on but been unable to talk about.

I feel elated, honestly elated.

Walkingtheplank · 25/02/2021 16:52

Baroness Brinton is an elegant speaker - just speaking nonsense unfortunately.

Sunkisses · 25/02/2021 16:52

"I am concerned that Lord Pannick says that the McConnell decision has a read across on other matters" - Baroness Brinton (Lib Dem)

Well tough!

Just wanted to say thank you to the OP for this brilliant thread my heart is hopeful. 🙏

scentedgeranium · 25/02/2021 16:52

Lib Dem's so disappointing. I always felt they were the evidence-led party. Not so. At least in the Lords

Biscuitsanddoombar · 25/02/2021 16:53

Ah Baroness ‘a Parliament that’s 50% men and 50% TW would be representative’ Brinton

YourWurstNightmare · 25/02/2021 16:53

Lib Dems picking a weird hill to die on.

DreamEvenBigger · 25/02/2021 16:54

Aha she said 'whilst living as men'. Presumably she doesn’t think that TWAW then - not really.

OvaHere · 25/02/2021 16:54

I know, it's quite incredible. I think a number of them have been following these issues very closely for some time. This isn't an off the cuff response.
vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 25/02/2021 16:54

She just said that transmen, NB people and intersex males can give birth - is that true?

I thought that people with DSDs are all infertile.

Melroses · 25/02/2021 16:54

I think I may have voted Libdem at least once in the past. Things would have to be drastically different for that to ever happen again.

OvaHere · 25/02/2021 16:55

@YourWurstNightmare

Lib Dems picking a weird hill to die on.
You would have thought they'd have realised this after Jo Swinson.
nauticant · 25/02/2021 16:55

Baroness Brinton is saying that while the rational Lords and Ladies are pleased with the outcome, this is causing harm to "the LGBT community".

No mention of suicide though. She really needed to have got that in for a Full House.
