Labour and gender identity

I've just logged onto my membership details on my labour account and they have changed the "sex" section, to which I had selected female to "gender identity".

I am so unspeakably angry about this! I had been considering leaving the party but this has made my mind up for me. How dare they! I don't have a "gender identity". How dare they change our personal information like this!

I have just checked this out. They have also given me a gender identity of female. My sex is female and I do not have a gender identity.

nauticant · 22/02/2021 17:43

The UK GDPR includes a right for individuals to have inaccurate personal data rectified, or completed if it is incomplete.

ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-data-protection/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr/individual-rights/right-to-rectification/

ChelseaCat · 22/02/2021 17:45

That is absurd.

I’ll be having my booking in appt shortly and will keep my eyes peeled to make sure they don’t subscribe me to some ridiculous gender ideology - my sex is relevant, my gender or (as the case is) lack thereof is not.

showmethegin · 22/02/2021 18:42

I've been angry about this issue for a while but this has just dipped me over into apoplectic.

I do not sign up to this gender crap and it's exactly what feminists have been fighting against for years, backwards misogynistic crap. It is so so damaging to women.

I emailed my Labour MP with my objections to the piece released by the party (linked below) that in an article about the equality act had left out one of the protected characteristics entirely (I'll let you guess which one) and got a ridiculous non answer back, and only after sending 5 chase emails

Good grief. They’ve completing ignored why sex is a P.C. The Equality Act replaces the Sex Discrimination laws that women fought very hard for.
They are a complete joke and I won’t be voting for them in this May’s elections.

Motherofgirl · 22/02/2021 18:49

Unbelievable. Sex and race discrimination are the 2 biggies as far as discrimination law is concerned. The ones that were there at the outset, in the 70s, when sex and race discrimination law was brought in (the Sex Discrimination Act 1975). How can they simply behave as if it's not a protected characteristic?
"The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 made it unlawful for an individual to be discriminated against in the workplace in relation to selection for a job, training, promotion, work practices, dismissal or any other disadvantage such as sexual harassment because of their sex or marital status."

Motherofgirl · 22/02/2021 18:50

And Keir Starmer is a fucking lawyer.

stumbledin · 22/02/2021 19:21

I know this is really pointless to say but where or why did it become so obligitory for large organisations to make these sort of changes and never ever consider the impact on everybody else.

I really am beginning to think that the EA will be ammended so that sex is no longer a protected characteristic but gender identity is.

And there will be a whole generation now and in the future who genuinely will not understand why it is an issue because they have grown up and been educated to think this is reality.

My local council which is Labour is boasting about how they are going to amend the GRA and it is only beastly reactionary Tories who stopped this from happening last year.

ChakaDakotaRegina · 22/02/2021 19:31

It actually says ‘gender identity’ not even just gender? And then the answer is ‘female’? Fucking hell.

Have they realised that this will affect all those that identify as NB etc? Have they just assumed their identities too? (Because that’s not pleasing anyone either)

It’s like you’ve selected catholic as your religion and then they’ve changed the word religion to ‘spirituality’ or ‘spirit guide type’ or something equally wanky and wrong. They can’t do this!

Yep, I've attached a screenshot

I'm devastated about it all. I have not ever, nor can I ever vote Tory, I hate everything they stand for. I feel like labour have me over a barrel as a liberal woman. I haven't missed a chance to vote since I was 18 but am really tempted to spoil my ballot paper in May.

OP posts:
EightiesRobot · 22/02/2021 20:35

I'm spoiling my paper unless an individual candidate stands up for women. And I need to get round to cancelling my Labour Party membership. Unfortunately, I can't continue to support a party that seems to have just one MP and one Lord that cares about sex as a protected characteristic.

Agree completely

If they are going to use gender identity (which i dont think they should) they should at least have the fucking manners to ask you!

PronounssheRa · 22/02/2021 20:47

Tut tut the Labour Party assuming people's gender identity.

In all seriousness ignoring a protected characteristic in favour of something with no basis in law and then assigning this to people without consent is astonishing and possibly breaches GDPR. But I've come to expect this from them now.

Ifyourefeelingsinister · 22/02/2021 20:55

Just checked - yes they have done it for me too. Well that'll give me a push to cancel my membership, I was thinking of doing so anyway. I have never ever voted Tory in my life, but I am distraught at Labour's utter disdain for women.

JosieJarker · 22/02/2021 20:58

My workplace asked for gender.
I crossed it out and wrote sex on the contract.
My online portal says gender.
Which is very fucking annoying because I dont have a gender.
They shouldn't be collecting data they dont need.
I wish I could do something about it but they're full on woke.

Gcnq · 22/02/2021 21:13

I really am beginning to think that the EA will be ammended so that sex is no longer a protected characteristic but gender identity is.

This is one of the primary aims of TRA activism. All behind closed doors with "focus groups" omitting the female general public of course, with the obligatory "no debate"...

ChakaDakotaRegina · 22/02/2021 21:17

@showmethegin

Yep, I've attached a screenshot
They’ve put the ‘thinking of leaving?’ box in the right place at least!

Good for you! I think it's so dangerous because it's seems so innocuous if you aren't familiar with the subject. Gender has been used just as an alternative to sex for so long, but it's now being used as a Trojan horse.

I've clicked "thinking of leaving" and apparently will be getting a call to understand why. Good luck to whoever that is!

From Yes, Prime Minister, "[he's] a lawyer Bernard, getting around the law is what [he's] paid for".
JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 22/02/2021 21:42

I noticed it when I went in to cancel my membership a month or two ago. I think its a relatively recent change.

jellyfrizz · 24/02/2021 13:42

A bit binary that. What about all the non-binary, agender and pan gender folx?

jellyfrizz · 24/02/2021 16:21

Literally othering.

FindTheTruth · 24/02/2021 16:55

that screenshot is vomit inducing.

smart move nauticant. shouldn't be needed but ...
