Labour and gender identity

I've just logged onto my membership details on my labour account and they have changed the "sex" section, to which I had selected female to "gender identity".

I am so unspeakably angry about this! I had been considering leaving the party but this has made my mind up for me. How dare they! I don't have a "gender identity". How dare they change our personal information like this!

I’m watching all this from the US because whatever happens there will make it’s way here later.

cheeseismydownfall · 01/03/2021 07:32

It was thoughtful of them to make the "Thinking of leaving" button so accessible.

WendyTestaburger · 01/03/2021 11:33

I was going to say imagine the outrage if they forcibly assigned a religion to all their members. But this is so much worse! In one go they both deny that 50 percent of the population has specific needs and faces structural inequality related to their sex, whilst forcing us all to identify with regressive, oppressive stereotypes.

buckerrucker · 01/03/2021 12:26

Well put, Wendy.

WarOnWomen · 01/03/2021 17:34

As well as the usual reasons, do you think it’s been changed partly because Labour knows that women are leaving in droves and, to counteract that, are allowing identity to be the main focus. Thereby, showing that there are still lots of “women” in Labour Party.

RozWatching · 01/03/2021 17:56

It will certainly deter some of us from joining. Broad church my arse.

Spiegelx · 01/03/2021 22:50

It does sound suspect from a GDPR perspective that they have collected data to one question and used the data to answer a different question, without consent

FindTheTruth · 03/03/2021 07:06

women are leaving in droves

is there a way to find out how many? FOI?

slug · 03/03/2021 07:23

Make an official complaint. Nothing put the wind up them more. ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint

peak2021 · 03/03/2021 08:06

OP if you leave, please tell them why.

WeRoarSometimes · 05/03/2021 10:27

I wrote to my local Labour Party about the Labour website - the page explaining the Equality Act no longer includes sex as a protected characteristic. Captured by Stonewall-think perhaps.
I've had a standard email about Labour challenging discrimination in all its forms and committed to blah blah blah.
I've written to Labour Women's Network as well and am not holding out hope of a sensible response.
I think that is 2 Labour memberships cancelled in this house.
The next election is some time away but I think I'll end up agreeing with someone I would never have usually considered worthy of my vote.

sashh · 05/03/2021 10:48

How can they simply behave as if it's not a protected characteristic?

I've been arguing this with the DWP over a few months. The EHRC don't see a problem, they think the use of gender is, 'semantics'

WeRoarSometimes · 05/03/2021 11:08

I only noticed this board a couple of weeks ago. But now the unease and second guessing that brought me here tells me clearly, our rights are being taken away.

Perhaps the idea of gender being confused with sex issemantics to many people. Their daily lives are not affected.
Many people take the 'live and let live' approach or suggest 'as long as they are not hurting anyone'.

But they are hurting us. Women. Women and girls are being hurt, excluded, demonised because of these so called semantics.

TartrazineCustard · 05/03/2021 11:29

It never seems to occur to them that they are forcing people to out themselves as non-binary, or questioning (remember when the Q stood for that?), or anything other than utterly settled on a "gender identity."

That used to be considered poor form.

JackieWeaversZoomAc · 05/03/2021 14:49

I've had leftie Labour "old school (so they should know better) but woke" guys laugh in my face when I've spoken of women as a class. A class with specific rights and needs. As far as they are concerned women do not exist as a class.

Gender ideology is a mens rights movement and the Labour woke blokes are revelling in it.
Here is the link: labour.org.uk/latest/what-is-the-equality-act-of-2010-and-why-does-it-matter/
wow UK's Labour are still deliberately ignoring that SEX is a protected characteristic under EA

that screenshot is shocking. shouldn't be surprised but still.

Labour have removed sex as a protected characteristic FFS

@Slug do you know what they'll do and the best way to go about it?

ArabellaScott · 05/03/2021 17:00

@showmethegin

Yep, I've attached a screenshot
Well, it's handy they've put the 'thinking of leaving?' button just below it.
Vargas · 05/03/2021 17:01

@showmethegin

I'm devastated about it all. I have not ever, nor can I ever vote Tory, I hate everything they stand for. I feel like labour have me over a barrel as a liberal woman. I haven't missed a chance to vote since I was 18 but am really tempted to spoil my ballot paper in May.
I feel exactly the same.
HermioneWeasley · 05/03/2021 17:06

How dare they assume your gender identity from the fact of your biological sex. Isn’t that the very definition of transphobia?

I am female but my identity is an aromantic pansexual genderqueer demi boi.

Tardigraded · 05/03/2021 18:31

I am not a 'gender identity'. I am a woman - adult female with two X chromosomes. I fully respect the right of other people to reject a gender identity they feel is wrong for them, but people cannot change their sex.

Alicethruthelookingglass · 06/03/2021 01:35

This new woke remake of "Idiocracy" isn't very funny. I want my money back.
