Labour and gender identity

I've just logged onto my membership details on my labour account and they have changed the "sex" section, to which I had selected female to "gender identity".

I am so unspeakably angry about this! I had been considering leaving the party but this has made my mind up for me. How dare they! I don't have a "gender identity". How dare they change our personal information like this!

Is there anyone to write to about it?
Or a petition?
Is Labour Women's declaration aware?

WeRoarSometimes · 06/03/2021 09:10

I wrote to my local Labour party about it recently.
And had a general note back about Labour being against all forms of discrimination.
I wrote about the law - why are they ignoring the law?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4179641-Any-advice-on-how-to-respond-to-Labour-Party-rep-very-welcome

I've written to Marsha De Cordova, Labour MP and Shadow Secretary for Women and Equalities. She wrote the bit about the Equality Act on Labour's web page. Or perhaps someone in her office did.
Either way, they have missed out 'sex' and it is no accident.

Anyone have any family or friends in Battersea?
That is MDC's constituency. She has a duty to reply to her constituents.
I'm expecting to get a non-response as I live far away from London.

I really admire you and all the women on here writing emails, especially when you don't get answers.

Is there some way they can be made to answer the question I wonder? as you say WeRoar it's the law.

Maybe a follow-up saying, 'i note your refusal to answer my question. I want it on record that you have refused to answer why you have removed sex as a protected characteristic. Why have you refused to answer this question? Is the labour party planning to change manifesto to remove sex as a protected characteristic?

WeRoarSometimes · 07/03/2021 12:46

@FindTheTruth
Thank you. I'm in awe of all the women on this board, incredibly determined and well informed taking this all up.
I've set reminders in my diary to follow up on when I have not had a response or a rubbish response.
My DH doesnt understand why I am bothering with all this. I've pointed out we have daughters and used the Staniland question....
He grimaced. He might just get it now.

showmethegin · 07/03/2021 17:56

Thanks all. Some really good point made here, love the idea about making an official complaint. I am definitely going to do that. I wrote to a number of MPs other than my own re that article, Starmer, Jess Philips as she does a lot re women and Marsha de Cordova, the author of the article and have had nothing back. I've written to the party about leaving and why, no response and I still haven't received a call back. The only response I had was when I emailed Lord Hunt, the labour peer that stuck up for women re the maternity bill. He said I really should talk to my MP (labour) about wanting to leave and why and was very supportive but again, no response.

Why are we paying these people £80k a year again?!

Huh. My membership details quite clearly show "Mrs" as my title, and some clown has changed it to "Mx" on my new membership card!

What? Really! Is this a policy thing? Are you going to report it?
OP posts:
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/03/2021 22:50

I have made a complaint asserting that they have misidentified me and that I might feel obliged to leave the party if they do not immediately send me a card in my correct name and style.

Beamur · 07/03/2021 23:33

My DH is a member and has emailed to ask why they've assumed this about him. Will report back!

I am NOT legal, but under GDPR legislation we have the right for individuals to have inaccurate data rectified:

This gender wokeness is really pissing me off. Especially as a dyed in the wool Labour supporter. I'm starting to lose friends over it as not able to have a different opinion on it all without fear of BANISHMENT!

Makes me worried for what my kid will have to deal with as it seems just accepted as truth across the board now :-(

Anyone like to connect in some way? Could do with some more sensible friends!
Let me know and I'll add you or something.
All the best

What is the ultimate goal for sex erasure? What are people wanting to achieve?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/03/2021 16:59

I suspect that ordinary trans person want more than anything else to achieve acceptance. This is something I can absolutely understand and that I absolutely support, but it seems to me that other people than them speaking in their name and threatening violence is not going to help their cause: every person waving a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire or saying someone should be raped or burned to death makes it less likely that people they have insisted they are associated with are going to be greeted gladly with open arms by anyone who finds violence abhorrent.

Hmmm. Why would anyone want the age of consent lowered to twelve, as some people campaigned for a few decades ago? Dunno guv, but they did. Why would anyone want to make safeguarding for children a dead letter? Same answer: beats me. Why would anyone want to sexualise infant school children? Baffled again.

WeRoarSometimes · 08/03/2021 22:13

Thought some of you may want an update.
I have had a response from Labour Women's Network thanking me for my resignation and that I will continue to be on their mailing list.
I didnt resign from anything.
I asked why Labour is excluding 'sex' from the protected characteristics on their page covering the Equality Act (2010).
I said that Labour's incorrect recording of this law makes me want to leave Labour. Their lack of support for sex base rights is worrying.
I don't feel they are bothered one bit.

Thank you for the update. Utterly infuriating!!!! Why will no-one listen to women??
ChoosandChipsandSealingWax · 09/03/2021 05:29

Came back on to add to what I said earlier:

“Asking about a personal characteristic such as 'gender' that is not a protected characteristic under the Act, may be in breach of the GDPR by processing personal - and potentially Special Category - data without a lawful basis.”

Wait, what? Stonewall champions are passing anonymised aggregate staff data to Stonewall?

Sounds like forced resignation or constructive dismissal - not sure what the word is in this strange situation

I have had a response from Labour Women's Network thanking me for my resignation

The person reading your complaint knew what they were reading and their response was to not answer your question and kick you out under the veneer of politeness. quite menacing really.

ico.org.uk/your-data-matters/raising-concerns/

It looks like you have to raise a concern direct with an organisation ans then you can raise it with ICO

PIKNIK20 · 10/03/2021 21:11

I do not have a gender identity and in the Census I will make sure to say that. You can ask for a paper copy and write to complain about the latest shannanigans.

Apology - This is somewhat off thread, but the Government survey on violence against women has been reopened if anyone missed the opportunity to complete it, and would like to now. Closes on 26th March

FindTheTruth · 14/03/2021 17:33

I don't have a gender identity

nor I. I don't mind someone else believing in gender identity as long as they leave women, girls, lesbians, bisexuals, homosexuals and many transgender people who acknowledge sex is real, alone.

FindTheTruth · 14/03/2021 17:34

thanks for flagging @SchadenfreudePersonified. worth a new thread do you think? it's so important.
