@growinggreyer

Oh *@NewParent11*, thank goodness you are here to keep these silly mummies in line.

Do you fondly imagine that because you have reproduced that makes you the boss of the world?

Just because a lot of mums feel that way doesn't mean dads do
NewParent11 · 17/02/2021 11:15

@CaraDuneRedux

I recommend handling sealions a bit like tantrumming toddlers. Just talk round them, and eventually they run out of steam.

Incidentally, Horizons, I have friends who are climate scientists and some of them do get death threats (one in particular received what the police called 'creditable death threats Shock). The trolls tend to be particularly abusive if you're female - then you get death and rape threats (in between being told you're too ugly to rape and therefore shouldn't be on telly...)

Thank you Halo

As I said earlier
Rise above and beat the stereotype, don't become one

SunsetBeetch · 17/02/2021 11:30

Everyone did so well to keep a civil tongue until you showed up. Bet your kids are learning great manners and conflict resolution from you. Keep up the good work

Odfod. Swearing is permitted on here. You're not a moderator and you won't tone police me or anyone else on here.

CaraDuneRedux · 17/02/2021 11:31

@TheHeathenOfSuburbia

I suspect he skim read the Selina Todd paragraph as [blah blah women stuff] Hence his surprise when it all kicked off

If you assumed the free speech debate was in the same place as a decade ago, you'd think it was about Nick Griffin and milkshakes and stuff and wonder what all the fuss was about

And of course the supreme irony was that it was free speech that did for Nick Griffin. Lots of people on the left were outraged at Question Time giving him a platform - but in fact once he's exposed himself as a fucking Muppet live on TV in front of an audience of millions his political career tanked.
MissBarbary · 17/02/2021 11:32

I don't read the original tweet as calling Selina Todd a Nazi or a specific attack on feminism.

I read "Nazi" as intended to mean anyone who isn't a wokey lefty. I'm not aware of any genuine Nazis or Fascists being no- platformed so I see it as meant to cover the likes of Amber Rudd , Jordan Peterson and Julia Hartley- Brewer all of whom are no more Nazis than Todd but have been no-platformed and all of whom I suspect Djalil will think deserve it.

The person who has a legitimate complaint about being labelled in that way is the person with the Twitter handle @Tarunperin who was called "Adolf"

I'm very disappointed by Djalil. This notion that everyone who disagrees with you is a Nazi is, as @Tarunperin said, despicable.

SunsetBeetch · 17/02/2021 11:34

Oh I get it! A man has arrived, etc, etc

That's it in a nutshell, I think.

Yep. It completely minimises the evil that the nazis did. It's actually pretty offensive, imo. But perfectly acceptable in some circles. For reasons.

Ah, a new dad. How lovely. Maybe you could turn your attention to your offspring. I'm sure they would appreciate a few minutes of your time.

Just put them down for a nap actually. Stay at home dad so plenty of time to care for baby, keep on top of the housework and cooking with enough left over to scroll through mums net
PotholeParadies · 17/02/2021 11:51

I don't think Omid has learnt anything yet.

He's still targeting the woman he called Adolf last night by calling her Eva Braun.

This was 18 minutes ago.

Nazi is exactly what I meant in the tweet. You called me “despicable” and I jokingly called you “Adolf”. 1-1. Move on Eva (Braun). There I didn’t misgender you this time.

Yes, it's the antisemitism of likening a mainstream political disagreement to the premeditated murder and genocide of millions of people.

Plus the Manichean good versus evil oversimplification means you lose all nuance from politics (and also lose all grip on reality or any understanding of why your core voters are turning away from you).

InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 17/02/2021 11:53

You know what I had for tea last night?

Baked potato

I think they are the second lovely way of eating potatoes after Boulangere potatoes...

Thelnebriati · 17/02/2021 11:55

Does he know what's proposed for Scotland? That comment could be construed as hate speech.

I guess that 'free speech' doesn't seem very important compared to fish rotting on the docks but they are both symptoms of the same disease. Its an odd position for a comedian. I guess he doesn't think there's any threat to his livelihood from the creeping loss of free speech.

merrymouse · 17/02/2021 11:56

Maybe the nazi comment is an example of the unhelpful merging of US and UK political discourse on twitter and other social media.

In the US some of the people complaining about cancel culture really do literally align themselves with Nazis. That does not mean that everyone who complains about cancel culture is a nazi. But maybe if you are feeling a bit lazy and want to get International likes it's easy to reach for 'nazi'?

Some people really don't do well on twitter.

Wow, doubling down on his ignorance and stupidity. He's probably dug his heels in on this and his pride won't allow him to go back.

PotholeParadies · 17/02/2021 12:03

I have Opinions with a capital O about people who casually trivialise the Nazis, and the holocaust. If I tell you what I think of Djalili now, I'll probably get banned, but suffice it to say, I'll be voting with my feet when he comes on TV.

I don't endorse casual anti-semitism.

SunsetBeetch · 17/02/2021 12:03

*That's horrific!

Gina Carano got sacked for making a clumsy comparison to the Holocaust (antisemitic for minimising the Holocaust but her target was ordinary people who went along with the Nazis, not Jewish people).

Djalili gets away with likening ordinary women to members of the Nazi inner circle.

I'd call him a cunt, but he lacks the warmth and depth.*

Yet Gina's co-star hasn't received any pushback for this post. Funny huh? I wonder what the difference could be?

Omid Djalili on women's rights issues - not funny at all
CranberriesChoccyAgain · 17/02/2021 12:11

Re Gina Carano. The trans allies had her in their sites since the pronoun boop-bop-beep thing. Any transgression would be pounced on like she was the devil incarnate. Such a double standard but that's nothing new.

Very true. Pascal, of course, has pronouns in his username.

Would you say that to a woman wasting time on here?

The responses to NewParent are pretty childish.

The original tweet could be interpreted as an attack on Todd and by extension on feminists and left- wing feminists. I suppose if that's the issue at the forefront of one's mind that is how it would be taken.

Equally it can be interpreted as an attack on anyone who isn't a wokey- cokey lefty. I'm not a left- wing feminist and I read it as a general attack on the likes of the people I mentioned earlier and any others such as Germaine Greer, Julies Bindel and Burchill, Douglas Murray, Piers Morgan, Rod Liddle all of whom, for different reasons, annoy the "liberal" left.
