He must be on the same stuff as Trump Junior this week.

JosieJarker · 19/02/2021 21:37

The arrogance of the man is quite something.
Still not spoken to a real lawyer.
Embarrassing.

PotholeParadies · 19/02/2021 21:50

Firstly, IANAL, but I have legal textbooks, and it looks like a very poor case.

Katie Hopkins and Jack Monroe was totally different. KH misidentified a picture of someone being a prat on a war memorial as Jack and tweeted that out.

That is nothing like someone being sarky about the implications of your tweet. Any reasonable person on the clapham omnibus could tell quite clearly from the quote tweet of Omid's tweet at the top of Dr EM's thread, what was going on.

Secondly, a legal case would be a PR nightmare for Djalili. No-one outside twitter and MN knows about this at the moment. That is not something he should work to change.

merrymouse · 19/02/2021 22:09

I think somebody who earns a living as a comedian might want to think twice about suggesting that sarcasm is libellous.

nauticant · 19/02/2021 22:09

There's a definite risk this would be reported/perceived as "Omid Djalili sues woman for not finding him funny and telling him so".

One thing the JM vs KH fiasco has in common with OD. When the slur was pointed out, if both KH and OD had simply said "oh, I seem to have made a mistake, I'm sorry", then both matters would have immediately blown over and been forgotten in a day or two. Meanwhile, I wonder if OD is going to push this into day 4.

I don't think that would limit his repatoir at all. He self-identifies as a comedian but he was certainly not assigned funny at birth.

JosieJarker · 19/02/2021 22:56

Lol
If only he had the wit, intelligence and humour that some of the brilliant women here were blessed with.

PotholeParadies · 19/02/2021 22:58

I think there are a couple of thousand people now who might have to be private about their GC sympathies in RL, but who would take great joy in publicly sharing any article on FB that had that sentiment as the headline.

7Days · 19/02/2021 23:21

Let it happen.

OD don't stop 😂

MissBarbary · 19/02/2021 23:58

@Lordamighty

Does anyone ever change their minds during these Twitter spats though? Despite all the disagreeing with his view he is ploughing on & the unbridled glee when he latched onto the “Dr EM is anti trans” tweet, giving him his get out of jail free card.
Someone did early on in this debacle. It was a man - I can't remember his name but it was a gracious retreat.
PotholeParadies · 20/02/2021 00:05

Otto English, MissBarbary?

I'm assuming American twitter is asleep right now, but I ponder how well OD's closing tweet could go down with the ones who aren't too preoccupied with the awfulness of the Texan situation.

7. No, I’m not painting myself as a hero. But now feel I really know how Mike Pence felt on Capitol Hill Jan 6th when running for the cellar.

- End Thread.

Now waiting for pile-on from flies.

MissBarbary · 20/02/2021 00:15

Yes it was Otto English, thanks.

yourhairiswinterfire · 20/02/2021 00:19

I saw that too with Otto English (Andrew Scott). Francis Wheen sent him some links to articles on women who have been deplatformed, for 'crimes' including supporting LGBA. His reply was much more graceful that OD's.

Gary Lineker thanked people for giving him examples, rather than throwing a massive mantrum.

Putting the twit in twitter. Bless him.

merrymouse · 20/02/2021 07:34

He has form. This is about an uninformed ‘funny’ tweet in 2019, but the advice about apologising when you clearly haven’t understood an issue still applies.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/omid-djalilis-joke-welsh-language-16537518.amp

“When you have so many people taking that view, that is probably a good barometer to help you understand that your joke was probably not your best. Maybe the decent thing to do would be to hold your hands up to that, explain yourself and apologise.

Or perhaps Mr Djalili should read a little Welsh history in order to better understand what our language means to us.”

Porridgeoat · 20/02/2021 08:13

Really interesting record of university experiences

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/02/2021 08:28

Merrymouse

Just read that article. This sentence stands out:

A problem occurs when people look for something to be offended by rather than reacting to a comment that truly causes them hurt.

Oh the irony. His tweets do cause real hurt. They spread hatred. Hatred, which can cause very real hurt both physical and psychological. GC women are being threatened, beaten and abused with some needing physical protection against death threats. He fails to heed his own advice and is seeking legal address against a disabled woman with a brain injury.

Porridgeoat · 20/02/2021 08:49

I don’t know why he doesn’t do the right thing, own his mistake and apologise for inappropriately labelling people who are not nazis nazis. It takes a bigger person to own mistakes, a smaller person to be bludgengly defensive

He's eking out the drama with another post about hypothetical martian feminists.

NiceGerbil · 20/02/2021 20:31

Oh man.

I wanted to be Spock when I was a little girl.

I would love to go into space.

That cuts deep Sad

As that's feelings hurt does it matter more maybe?

nauticant · 20/02/2021 21:46

I thought he might call it a day at day 3 of his tantrum.

This one has an extremely fragile ego.

Cailleach1 · 20/02/2021 22:28

He strikes me as cheap and nasty. Why are all these yokes mr. men showing us what goes on in their grubby minds.

  1. My tweet was jumped on by some connecting ‘Nazis’ to women who have been deplatformed at universities. This was not my intention. And women being silenced of course is a concern.*

It's almost an apology. C'mon Omid, you were nearly there!
