This will come as no surprise to any Germans who live in the UK. I've had someone scream Nazi at me and that all Germans hate all other people for using a piece of lab equipment (that I had booked days in advance for that timeslot) when she wanted to use it, that was in NZ actually. My (half-NZ half German) children both have plenty of stories where they've been called Hitler or Nazis here in Scotland, dismissed by the primary school headmistress as just a bit of "banter". It's the digging in after having had a bit of time to think about it that I find astonishing in OD's case.

Twitter gives people, especially celebrities, a chance to set up their own little world where they post opinions that will be popular with their followers. It is an ego trip. Until something goes amiss, someone outs a foot wrong and it is thrown out into the wider twitterverse bringing posters with contrary opinions into the cozy little world, some of whom will be patiently pointing out the mistake, others will be more angry and even hostile. This is what happened to Omid. The initial post was mistake but he couldn't cope with it. Instead of engaging with those merely pointing out the error and admitting the mistake, he went down the defensive route of focusing on the most critical responses and claiming he was the victim of a hate campaign. Once in that siege mentality, it is hard to withdraw.

This is beyond embarrassing now. Jesus Christ. I'm ugrading my "clueless tosser" rating to "obnoxious, enraged tosser".
