His repeated tweeting on this is making him look unhinged

I completely agree @nauticant, it's as if Djalili's gone doolally.

BentBastard · 19/02/2021 13:24

The left have carefully crafted a narrative that free speech is inherently right wing therefore supporting it makes you Nigel Farage.

As a result Twitter this morning is full of the usual suspects clamouring to let their followers know they don't give a shit about free speech.

BentBastard · 19/02/2021 13:26

It doesn't both me in most instances, they're all presenting an imagine above anything else.

Deborah Meaden was a tad disappointing but she isn't the first and won't be the last to disappoint.

nauticant · 19/02/2021 13:33

I used to be pretty relaxed about free speech, things looked fine as far as I could see and so I thought people banging on about it were obsessives.

Then I saw that people who were trying to say something important were being silenced. It could be done without there needing to be a Stasi arresting people. That changed my view hugely.

RoyalCorgi · 19/02/2021 13:40

And apparently have no idea how stupid this makes them look. Do none of these people have the basic common sense to take the next step and ask how mocking an interest in free speech is going to play with the public?

HubertHerbert · 19/02/2021 13:47

I had a recent lecture on free speech at uni. Very heavily framed as 'the only people who feel their freedom of speech is being curtailed are dickheads who want to say racist things without being challenged'.

It's really disheartening

SheGonBringThatAttitudeHome2 · 19/02/2021 13:52

Should free speech at universities be a priority right now?

This reminds me of those politicians who say - "now is not the time to talk about gun control" - just after the latest mass shooting.

There never is a time to talk about some things.

Funny that...

nauticant · 19/02/2021 13:54

You have to admire the gall of those making the argument:

"You know who supports free speech? Nazis. That's right, it's Nazis who support free speech."

A neat example of The Big Lie.

Horizons83 · 19/02/2021 13:58

And ironically pushing people to the 'right wing'. Until recently I was always a Lib Dem voter. Now the only party who I can genuinely say I feel represents my core values and the aligns on the issues that matter to me is the Conservative Party.

Floisme · 19/02/2021 14:10

I think that when you realise you have painted yourself into a corner you have two choices:

  1. Have a good laugh about what an arse you are.
  2. Insist to anyone who will listen that you chose this corner and that any right thinking person would have chosen it too. Repeat until all but your closest friends have drifted away.

To some extent I can see how a political party can end up taking the second route. I'm more surprised that a comedian cannot spot the humour in their situation and yet here we are.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/02/2021 14:15

I totally agree, I feel so sad whenever I read anything these days on this forum.

I know it's hard, I think that's why many women refuse to see it is happening and get angry when it's pointed out. Being aware of the misogyny in society isn't fun, and it's not something you can unsee Thanks

OD, with a massive following, has likely seen firsthand what comes of disagreeing with the mob that are TRAs. In his mind, calling women who want to discuss what is happening to their rights Nazis is less harmful to his status than risking being labelled a transphobe for agreeing that women should have that platform.

Funny really, what seems to be the common thread amongst misogynist men is the complete understanding that TW are most definitely NOT women. They'll happily chant trans rights are human rights while pushing women's rights under a bus.

Darcinian · 19/02/2021 14:30

I am expecting Gervais to skewer him soon.

CranberriesChoccyAgain · 19/02/2021 14:33

@Darcinian

I am expecting Gervais to skewer him soon.
And for Frankie Boyle to jump to ODs side.
BuntingEllacott · 19/02/2021 14:42

Remember that bit in The Mummy where he ran head first into a wall inside an Egyptian temple because a supernatural scarab was in his head, and dropped dead?

Apparently he's using that scene as a model for how to interact on Twitter.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/02/2021 14:43

Bunting Grin

Lordamighty · 19/02/2021 14:43

Does anyone ever change their minds during these Twitter spats though?
Despite all the disagreeing with his view he is ploughing on & the unbridled glee when he latched onto the “Dr EM is anti trans” tweet, giving him his get out of jail free card.

Rarely, but I’ve never seen it on a thread that involves calling people Nazis.

Not publicly, but I imagine some observers wander off and read around the topic quietly to themselves, so it still serves a purpose.

Mollyollydolly · 19/02/2021 19:06

I just wish I could see David Baddiel and Ricky Gervais discussing it.

PotholeParadies · 19/02/2021 20:47

And Omid has posted. AGAIN.

Lordamighty · 19/02/2021 20:55

Still getting his arse handed to him though.

BuntingEllacott · 19/02/2021 20:58

In case anyone is wondering, he's gone with 'It was a joke, I've been misrepresented, I've been called mean things in my life, I did try to listen to some of my mates, but in the end, I'm too fucking arrogant to admit I was wrong, so I wasn't, it was all those bitches who I'm now going to liken to annoying flies because I have belatedly realized calling them Adolf fell pretty bloody flat. Now let's talk about the footy, 'cos I showed those women what for, eh lads?'

Dontbeme · 19/02/2021 20:59

I guess he has no management, pr or media advisers or anyone to tell him to just stop digging. Has he reached Australia yet?

He also conveniently forgot to mention the women he called Adolf and Eva Braun in his little summary.

PotholeParadies · 19/02/2021 21:10

Good news! Some new people who missed all the earlier tweets have turned up for it. We've got lots of 'yeah, Omid you da man'. But also some NEW people who are horrified that he was throwing the word Nazi around like confetti.
