Another man who accidentally killed his wife as he ‘flipped’. She was trying to leave, he must have stopped her then strangled her.

I do hope that with the manslaughter sentence he will still have punishment but fear with diminished responsibility he won’t.

I have also sent a review request. It only takes one request to trigger a review so it will be looked at. However, it is a multi stage process first the AG will decide if it should be referred to the Court of Appeal. If it does get referred the CoA may decide the sentence stands.

MoltenLasagne · 18/02/2021 13:28

@JesusInTheCabbageVan

In sentencing Judge Thomas said: "The overwhelming greatest tragedy is that a lady of 67 years who was in good health had her life ended at the hands of a man she had loved for nearly 50 years. It is also a tragedy that an act of a couple of minutes and one you immediately repented will define you for the rest of your life."

Aw. Poor him. Hmm

That is so offensive I can barely stand it. A man who kills his wife should have to live with it forever, even if he supposedly repented straight after.

How can a judge be so incredibly naive and oblivious to the victim?

MondayYogurt · 18/02/2021 13:39

Presumably he is still as depressed as ever, if not more so now he will go to prison. Does anyone think he will have the same sort of uncontrollable outburst and attempt to strangle a guard or inmate?
I would safely bet the answer will be no.
He gave himself permission to kill his wife.

Bastard. This case has made me feel very angry.

Rest in peace Ruth.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 18/02/2021 14:09

MoltenLasagne I know - when the Judge holds opinions like that, sadly the sentence isn't that surprising.

ImAllOut · 18/02/2021 14:56

I'm not sure if people are aware of the controversy around this case relating to the Senedd member who tweeted about it as well:

I live just up the road from here so have been following this case since the incident was first reported last year. Unfortunately there was a similar case a couple of weeks ago in the same area, but there are no further details on it yet.

WHAT?!!!!!

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 18/02/2021 16:31

I have emailed the Attorney General's office. Thank you for the lilnk.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 18/02/2021 16:51

How can the judge say it was an act of a couple of minutes. He obviously needs to see how long it takes to strangle someone.

He could've "snapped" upstairs for a couple of minutes, but as soon as she got away from him he decided to continue the act and had plenty of time to "snap out of it".

Absolute disgrace.

Thelnebriati · 18/02/2021 18:30

If he went from zero to murder in a couple of minutes he's more dangerous, not less.

mimivanne · 18/02/2021 21:58

Harriet Harman is to write to the Attorney General requesting the case be referred to the Court of Appeal as an unduly lenient sentence.

Good
SapatSea · 18/02/2021 22:14

So depressing. If the sentence doesn't get reviewed I bet he'll be out in much less than half his sentence with a tag/on license. Lots of time to enjoy all those savings he was so worried about Hmm

MadameButterface · 18/02/2021 22:19

I hope he dies in prison

Women: Your Lives Don't Matter.

They may as well write it in stone and display it outside the courts.

ImAllOut · 18/02/2021 22:53

And Jess Phillips too, she's said on Twitter.

The secret barrister has written this up.

thesecretbarrister.com/2021/02/20/how-can-a-5-year-prison-sentence-ever-reflect-the-intentional-taking-of-a-life/

Not clear why the lowest responsibility was chosen, then the only agrivating factor was that is prolonged, it seemed the domestic setting wasn’t taken into account.

Then a third off for pleading guilty leading to the low sentence.

Priti Patel has oredred a review into the case:

it seemed the domestic setting wasn’t taken into account.

Surely this should be an aggravating factor? Committed by someone who had a responsibility to provide love and care. The ultimate human betrayal.

Priti Patel has ordered a review into the case

Good news.
