Another man who accidentally killed his wife as he ‘flipped’. She was trying to leave, he must have stopped her then strangled her.

I do hope that with the manslaughter sentence he will still have punishment but fear with diminished responsibility he won’t.

Totally agree Whatsnew

GingerBeverage · 16/02/2021 13:22

Is it possible to request a review?

Poor poor woman

WishICouldThinkOfAGoodName · 16/02/2021 13:41

Bloody disgrace

Tehmina23 · 16/02/2021 14:21

So awful.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 16/02/2021 14:48

There was an episode of Cracker in which Siobahn Redmond or the other female detective had an excellent few moments in which she explained that the misogyny is in plain sight and the charge ought to be written as Mans Laughter (back in the days when men were always charged with manslaughter for the 'snapping in an uncharacteristic way' defence and women were always charged with murder).

Soubriquet · 16/02/2021 14:53

These men are always “so nice and wouldn’t hurt a fly”

Friends and family are oh so shocked that something like this has happened

But then little details come out and he isn’t as nice as people said he is

These men are not nice. They don’t snap. They get angry because the woman dared to fight back

RIP you brave woman. I’m sorry your fight didn’t win

despairenting · 16/02/2021 15:00

Absolutely disgusting. He KILLED her, he took away her life in a sustained, violent attack while she tried to flee. People don't die instantly of strangulation and you don't haemorrhage and then die from just a bit of pressure to the neck. You have to MEAN to strangle someone.

HermitsLife · 16/02/2021 15:06

And they always "wanted to take their own life too" but never quite managed it.

I would love court juries to have a dummy to try strangulation on, with a force sensor so you could see how hard it is.

It would have different settings so if enough force to stop breathing but you have to keep going for 6 minutes, enough force to stop blood and then with enough to break bones.

I wonder if then there would be more convictions.

I think I read he used a dressing gown cord, which changes the force/pressure but surely shows intent.

You can’t request a review of the verdict unless there is significant new evidence but once the judge passes sentence on Thursday that can be requested to change.

The sentence will show how much the judge brought the diminished responsibility line.

www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/offences/crown-court/item/manslaughter-by-reason-of-diminished-responsibility/

If they think Anthony William’s had low responsibility it could be 3-12 years, but even with the partial defence if the judge thinks he still has high responsibility it could be up to 40.

If he used the dressing gown cord then that is classed as a weapon which can increase the sentence.

A friend recently served on a jury and said afterwards how much he noticed people there were so concerned not to make the wrong decision or to be responsible for harm that they wanted an almost impossible degree of certainty, ie absolutely no doubt of any kind could be identified or argued, or else to acquit/minimum possible outcome for the person. He felt the outcome of the case he was involved in was unfair because of it. He wasn't before but is now strongly of the opinion that the time of layman juries has passed.

MaudTheInvincible · 16/02/2021 16:54

Sally Challen's son, David has tweeted about this verdict. It must be so hard for people with experiences like his to see cases like this.

Poor woman, she must have been so scared.
KimberWozRobbed · 18/02/2021 12:42

He's been sentenced to five years

Poolbridge · 18/02/2021 12:43

www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-56109330

5 years is all he has got. He’ll probably be out in half of that. An absolute disgrace and further failure of justice.

I am so f$!king sick of women’s lives being treated without value. It’s not good enough and demands a change to laws which are constantly failing women. I feel so angry and disappointed. It beggars belief.

MaudTheInvincible · 18/02/2021 12:44

Ffs Sad

Poolbridge · 18/02/2021 12:46

Better articulated by David Challen:

Poor woman, she must have been so scared.
Hoppinggreen · 18/02/2021 12:46

I don’t t think this mans behaviour before or after he strangled his wife to death is relevant.
How does he get away with it because it’s out of character and he’s normally a “gentle giant”? He killed her after chasing her so he could have just stopped at any point
I appreciate his daughter would rather not believe he was ordinary capable of something like this but come on

Clymene · 18/02/2021 12:47

Five years - that's all her life was worth

I think this one needs to be looked at again.

I was going to say this - but not sure as the conviction is manslaughter not murder?
ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/02/2021 13:11

The list isn't exhaustive and other manslaughter cases have been reviewed from memory. Manslaughter by way of diminished responsibility is an alternative to a murder conviction . DR is a partial defence to murder reducing it to manslaughter. The original charge would have been murder.
I think it will fall within the remit of the review process.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 18/02/2021 13:12

In sentencing Judge Thomas said: "The overwhelming greatest tragedy is that a lady of 67 years who was in good health had her life ended at the hands of a man she had loved for nearly 50 years. It is also a tragedy that an act of a couple of minutes and one you immediately repented will define you for the rest of your life."

Aw. Poor him. Hmm

TheLetterZ · 18/02/2021 13:14

5 years and out in less.

Not sure why but this story has really gotten to me. Just so angry and upset at the whole thing. I am going to submit a request for case review as the sentence is too low.

5 years? Poor Ruth, I hope she haunts his every waking and sleeping moment.

TheLetterZ · 18/02/2021 13:21

I know it was for manslaughter but it doesn’t say that list is exclusive so worth an email. This is what I have sent

Please review the sentence of Anthony Williams, 70, convicted of manslaughter, sentenced on 18th February 2021 at Swansea Crown Court as it is too low for what was a prolonged chase and attack on Ruth Williams, which cumulated in him strangling her to death.
