Solidarity in Aldi today!

This is my first thread in a very long time but I wanted to share the uplifting and fabulous experience I had today in Aldi😂

I reached 'peak' during the last lockdown and lurk regularly on here while trying to make sense of the madness.
DH is supportive to a degree but very nervous of me being vocal about my GC views as we are both teachers. I am a middle leader in a secondary school and he worries about me getting sackedConfused
So I can't discuss this much IRL.

Anyway, queing outside Aldi today and saw a woman a few people ahead of me with a 'Woman
Noun
adult human female' tote bag. I was thrilled and as soon as there was an opportunity (by the fruit and vegWink) I told her I liked her bag and that I knew what it meant.
She said I had made her day; I replied I she had made mine. Then she said 'Solidarity sister and see you on the next march'
We went on our separate ways but bloody hell it was brilliant. To vocalise it and be recognised. Felt a bit emotional and even now re-writing it, am a bit teary.

Just wanted to share. It was wonderful.

@Mrsmorton

There seem to be an awful lot of posters on this thread for which google isn't working today or, who would rather ask "what's GC" multiple times when it would be easier and quicker for them just to RTFT dog whistle
I have RTFT and I googled dog whistle and funnily enough I got actual dog whistles...
PotholeParadies · 14/02/2021 15:50

Dog whistle is a phrase that entered the political lexicon from the observation that dogs and humans have different hearing ranges, and so you can make a noise that a dog will hear, but humans can't.

CranberriesChoccyAgain · 14/02/2021 15:52

@RagzReturnsRebooted

Try urban dictionary 😁

RagzReturnsRebooted · 14/02/2021 15:52

Never mind, I have found a political definition which I'm guessing is what was being referenced in the OP, however I'm not sure I understand it in the context it was used. Another few years reading on these boaand I may begin to have a clue what all the references mean!

Mrsmorton · 14/02/2021 15:53

So you gave up? You could add any of the following to your search and get an informative result: phrase, trans, feminism,

or even the tragically complex search... "what is a dog whistle"

Aha, that one a made sense, thank you!
"dogwhistle
In politics, to make an innocuous statement which is designed to trigger previously indoctrinated bigotry & hatred without being recognized by outsiders for bigotry or hateful speech."
For anyone else like me but too scared to look stupid by asking.

chestnutSquash · 14/02/2021 15:56

I am surprised to see certain posters who, elsewhere on MN, give the impression of knowing absolutely everything about everything, yet express naive bafflement about this topic. It is disconcerting.

QueenoftheAir · 14/02/2021 16:00

Fantastic @JaneyHenderson

What a great story - thanks for sharing. Solidarity, sister!

ArabellaScott · 14/02/2021 16:03

'dog whistle' is used widely outwith Mumsnet, though. Particularly in leftwing politics. It actually really irritates me, as it's often used to imply hidden/secret nefarious intent. As in ''women's rights' is a bigoted dogwhistle'.

Wigglegiggle0520 · 14/02/2021 16:09

@Highwind

Love this! It shows that we are out there, even if some of us can’t afford to be as openly visible as others.

There are so many of us. The tide will turn soon, I just know it.

Solidarity sisters. X

Absolutely this.

Brilliant thread OP and another investing in a bag.

RoyalCorgi · 14/02/2021 16:09

I skipped most of this thread when the sea lions started appearing but I just wanted to say well done to the OP for making the connection and agree with the poster who said "I’m picturing June (OfFred) whispering to another resistance Handmaid in the grocery store". It also reminded me of regime dissidents making contact with each other in Eastern Europe and passing round Samizdat.

The idea that believing in biological reality is now a subversive belief that could lose you your job would be funny if it wasn't so depressing.

Bluesername · 14/02/2021 16:36

Sea lions? Hmm

@YetAnotherSpartacus my T-shirt is 100% cotton, it’s a Fruit of the Loom T-shirt, the v neck is more fitted than a standard T-shirt, I’m wearing a S, I’m usually a size 8-10. It’s washed well and been tumble dried lots, it’s kept its shape and the foil print is still perfect, no sign of it wearing off.

picklemewalnuts · 14/02/2021 16:46

For the posters less familiar with some of the terms who are finding some answers a bit sharp, bear in mind that faux naive questions and demands to explain are a frequent tool of people who are trying to derail gender critical conversations. Women's discussions brought to a halt under constant 'what about', 'but I don't understand' and general sea lioning etc.

Women get fed up spending time and energy patiently explaining the same stuff to disingenuous people who'd argue black was white if they could divert attention away from gender critical feminism.

Additionally, it's a big subject with a big history. Hang around, read around, and you'll pick it up as you go along. There are bits I don't get- so I'm watching and waiting for the penny to drop.

Bluesername · 14/02/2021 16:51

Thank you. I had assumed it referred to something like clapping seals, i.e. agreeing with the OP without adding anything else, so am glad it's a different explanation CakeWine

Winesalot · 14/02/2021 16:51

RagzReturnsRebooted

Sorry Ragz. My post was pointing out that the term (which I hate) is generally used by activists to discredit women, to silence them and to shame them. The irony is the poster who used it has limits of their own to the extend of agreeing with self iD yet spends their time trying to shame women discussing their own limits and how it impacts them.

You will see ‘dog whistle’ used by activists who simply want people to shut the fuck up and they will not engage because they feel using the term discredits the argument already.

Whatthechicken · 14/02/2021 17:00

I wear my Magdalen t shirts quite a lot...but haven’t noticed any one else noticing yet. I wear my resistance t shirt a lot too, would love someone to give me the nod.

TofuDelights · 14/02/2021 17:05

Off the back of OP's cheering Aldi encounter I've just bought a tote and a Thought Criminal t-shirt! Thanks for this thread, OP.
