Do please avoid this if you are likely to be upset - I am finding the story very hard to read.

Disturbing and horrible allegations coming from women detained in China. 'rape has become a culture'

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-55794071

Is there anything at all that can be done about this?

Where is there outcry? All the usual public figures that love to condemn atrocities appear to have lost their voices.

These poor, poor women have no one with any influence that gives a shit.

2021 and rape and torture of women is so fucking accepted that it doesn't even warrant commenting on?

Boycott!

LetItGoGo · 03/02/2021 14:23

Awful.

But op thank you for bringing it to my attention.

ScrapThatThen · 03/02/2021 14:38

Thank you for posting this OP. I know they are not popular here but I applaud Marks and Spencer for signing a pledge in January to not use cotton from Xinjiang. And I applaud Dominic Raab's strong statement on these issues www.gov.uk/government/speeches/foreign-secretary-on-the-situation-in-xinjiang-and-the-governments-response

Jesus Christ. I knew about the "re-education" but had no idea it was this depraved. I'm following for ideas about what to do.

SpiderGwen · 03/02/2021 15:19

It's horrific. Why aren't the UN holding China to account?

BelleHathor · 03/02/2021 15:23

LBC Presenter Maajid Nawaz has been shouting about this since last year he even went on Hunger Strike. He has been lobbying MPs but the problem is that too many of our political leaders have ties to the CCP and are afraid of angering China as we are too reliant on them to produce goods. Women are expendable so that we can buy cheap goods 😥.

People are lobbying for the UN to investigate, especially now DNA is being collected to identify the Uyghurs.

That's appalling. Who can hold the UN to account?

BelleHathor · 03/02/2021 15:43

Right now no one. Just like the WHO held up information on Covid a lot of international bodies have been captured by the CCP who have installed leadership biased towards them. Outgoing US secretary of state Mike Pompeo did state that the CCP was guilty of Crimes against Humanity this year. New SOS Blinken has agreed with him, so fingers crossed but no nation will act before America.

This does not surprise me.

The UN has been covering up abuse, rape and human trafficking by its peace-keeping forces for years now. They don't give a shiny shit about women.

They are, however, very, very politicised, and cosying up to the CCP is the current in thing.

This is beyond hideous.

Twitter is a good platform for getting voices heard, but I'm quite a rookie. Anyone know if we share this story and tag the Chinese embassy in London if it would just get blocked?

Yes, I've read "the Whistleblower" by Kathryn Bolkovac.

No one on Twitter gives a shit. It's complete radio silence on this, even from the many rad fems I follow Sad

lightand · 03/02/2021 16:12

China rules the world.
Not the US
Not Saudi
Not the UN
Not EU

MoltenLasagne · 03/02/2021 16:13

Horrifying and yet not surprising. Individually we can do little but we can write to MPs raising it with them, asking them what they are doing about our relations with a country committing genocide. We can contact companies with goods from China explaining why we will not buy from them. As far as possible we can look at what we're buying and avoid Chinese goods.

lightand · 03/02/2021 16:13

Please God help them.

CaraDuneRedux · 03/02/2021 16:27

Just to repeat the link from upthread, this is a starting list of companies to boycott:

LizzieSiddal · 03/02/2021 16:29

Just horrific, those poor women. There is no excuse for the govt not to be bringing in sanctions. It's all happening in plain sight.

I'm not buying anything from China but realise it's only a drop in the Ocean.

LizzieSiddal · 03/02/2021 16:29

Thank you for the links pointing to other action to take.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/02/2021 16:30

Thank you Cara and LetMeBubble for the link.

Christ almighty, BelleHathor.

Twitter of Emma Reilly, the lawyer above, brave woman:

They're trying to keep it covered up. The UN is supporting and enabling genocide.

Why aren't the hugely wealthy Arab countries doing anything to help their fellow Muslims? Not that they seem to do much for anyone else.
