Humza Yousaf and Scottish Hate Crime Bill

Humza Yousaf, the Scottish Justice Secretary, has just tweeted that the recent amendments tabled on the Freedom Of Expression (Hate Crime) Bill will not now be moved on. Hugely disappointing for women speaking out might still be labelled hate criminals here in Scotland. And I can't help wondering if it's somehow linked to Joanna Cherry's sacking.

Thanks for the share token! I'm surprised that more Muslim women are not asking how it will impact upon their rights to not be able to discuss single sex spaces.

Eg. There is a thread I was reading on ovarit (I sometimes lurk there) about how a Muslim student had deliberately selected a female only house so that she didn't have to wear her head covering at home, but someone was in the house who presented as male, but declared themselves to be she/her. The Muslim continued to wear her cover, but was concerned that this would be read as "misgendering" by not acting in the way she would have otherwise done in single sex accomodation. Fortunately, the person she was sharing with didn't realise that she had changed her behaviour based on perceiving this person as male.

Do you have a link to the survey? I'm struggling to find it.

Not finished yet. There will need to be a vote on the Bill by the MSPs in parliament.

I wonder if all the shenanigans at the moment will make any difference. Maybe there'll be a re-think to make it look like women are being listened to?

lightand · 28/02/2021 16:10

@NonnyMouse1337 Thanks. The thread just suddenly finished so I wasnt sure what had happened.
