Are cross-dressers only protected when they're cross-dressed?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 04/02/2021 19:20

What if you are not wearing clothes which are stereotypically of the style worn by your sex, but, you are not cross dressing - just comfortable?

For instance, I am wearing a man's fleece, jumper and shirt and a pair of saggy old jogging bottoms, no bra and a pair of trainers today.

My pants are very sensible large kidney warmers, they are for women, but, that is the only thing that is.

Am I a cross dresser, or just a frump?

Is frumpiness a protected characteristic? Should it be?

CharlieParley · 04/02/2021 19:36

An SNP spokesman said: "Joanna Cherry was removed from the front bench because of unacceptable behaviour, which did not meet the standards expected of a front bench spokesperson - not because of the views she holds."

That's only because they couldn't find any evidence for transphobia and anti-semitism. They certainly look hard for it. And we know they did. So these briefings now about unacceptable behaviour are still about Joanna disagreeing with the leadership i.e. her views.

CharlieParley · 04/02/2021 19:36

^looked hard

littlbrowndog · 04/02/2021 19:36

You are a protected cross dresser. Report as a hate crime anyone who says anything.

And in Scotland now that means even anyone in your house

😂😂

@SunsetBeetch

Say what you like about JRM, but he understands the importance of free speech and of respecting those you disagree with.
Mhairi Black commented how helpful he had been to her when she first became an MP.
ArabellaScott · 04/02/2021 22:56

Jacob Rees Mogg, Nicola. Jacob Fucking Rees Mogg is making you look bad.

That was a reasonable speech from him and props for actually acknowledging the shite Cherry has been put through plus free speech.

Mind you, I don't get the 'moan a lot' - is that a pun, if so, it's pretty shit.

Manderleyagain · 04/02/2021 23:07

It would be really bad law if identical speech could be considered hate speech or not hate speech depending on if the motivation was religious or secular. So I'll be v interested to see the clause when the next stage happens.

Yousaf tweeted this about the clause on freedom of expression regarding religion (taken from the screen shot in this thread):

"For example FOE for religion includes 'expressions of antipathy, dislike or insult towards religion' ".

Here he is talking about a clause which allows people to insult religions.

Manderleyagain · 04/02/2021 23:12

Joanna cherry replied to a tweet - someone tweeted wondering about the 30 Yr old man who's been arrested, and who his associates will turn out to be. She replied 'watch this space'.

My guess is that means he isn't just a random unknown with a twitter account.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 04/02/2021 23:16

I am mentally running through who is active in the SNP, 30ish and male...

What have things come to?

Cailleach1 · 05/02/2021 00:14

How sad that it would not be in the least surprising if someone connected with such political parties were discovered to be guilty of this threatening behaviour. Startling and distressing how they (and many others of course) have become quite radicalised by this ideology. Almost to science denier level. And, salivating with pleasure from barking it at women who are 'defending (reality of) biology' as Amnesty postured was an inherently hateful stance.

Mona Lott was a character in an ancient BBC comedy show.

In The National today: "Joanna Cherry: Attempts to smear or intimidate those who want to debate policy won’t make us stronger":

www.thenational.scot/news/19066835.removal-snp-front-bench-smacks-double-standards/

It's obviously a personal account -- but still a more coherent, internally consistent, and believable explanation of events surrounding the "sacking" than anything I've seen so far from the SNP officially or via the usual anonymous SNP Westminster "insiders".

We unfortunately don't learn what "unacceptable behaviour" is (1) bad enough to be sacked from the SNP front bench but not suspended from the party AND (2) WORSE than (just for example) reading out confidential and sensitive letters from your constituents in a public video whilst making fun of their trauma and calling them derogatory names or launching a public campaign to smear and defund a gay rights group or announcing to the press that your leader promises to pass a piece of proposed legislation that's still out for public consultation. We're not alone in the dark though, because according to this article, no one has yet officially told Cherry what that behaviour was either.

Shocking to see how the cancel culture is going.

Say what you like about JRM, but he understands the importance of free speech and of respecting those you disagree with

I agree.

NecessaryScene1 · 05/02/2021 09:52

At this point I couldn't give a damn about "left" or "right". That's not the current battle. It's liberal versus authoritarian.

We can go back left-v-right arguments about optimum tax rates or immigration levels when we've re-established that people can acknowledge sex without being fired.

despairenting · 05/02/2021 10:35

Sorry if this is a really dumb question, but are the recent influx of SNP resignations largely because of the trans stuff, e.g. Sturgeon's vidéo, the removal of Cherry, etc.? Or is there something else going on?

ArabellaScott · 05/02/2021 11:42

reading out confidential and sensitive letters from your constituents in a public video whilst making fun of their trauma and calling them derogatory names

God, yes, I'd forgotten about that. Charming. I suppose some MPs forget their obligations and responsibilities.

Yes, society has moved beyond such narrow affiliations now. Though many still cling to then for identity, and out of habit.

I sent an email to Peter Murrell about that and in addition mentioning the unacceptable disrespect towards her fellow MP. I didn't even get an acknowledgement.

And another article in the Times, I can barely keep up today:

Yes, society has moved beyond such narrow affiliations now. Though many still cling to then for identity, and out of habit.

It's also a huge trust and credibility issue. It would be naive to assume that the shallow thinking and authoritarian streak are neatly restricted to just one thing.
