@MichelleofzeResistance

Identifying as is a Thing.

I identify as a female with x faith. End of issue.

Yes I was just thinking that. Non-practicing but devoutly religious woman popping up everywhere.

HeadPain · 04/02/2021 16:36

Thankful for the ones who've supported us though

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 04/02/2021 16:41

I hope Lucy fancies swimming then, and see how that is handled...

Justhadathought · 04/02/2021 17:03

It's the exact same issue: how on earth can you police these boundaries? It's not realistic. What's to stop any male person identifying as a Muslim woman and entering that single sex swim

Because if you are Muslim, using this particular example of women only swimming sessions ( which certainly exist, and are valued, where I live), then you are not compelled to deny the teachings of your religion, and presumably that would mean being free to call a spade a spade, and not to have to falsely declare it a bucket?

MaudTheInvincible · 04/02/2021 17:03

(Of course, it would simply be swapping one form of patriarchy for another, and many would probably decide it was beneath their dignity to do so, but I wonder what the legal position would be)

Whatdoyoudowhendemocracyfails · 04/02/2021 17:07

I really object to cross-dressing - a male sexual fetish - being legally protected from criticism. What would be next - wearing your rubber gear to work?

Can't tell if this article is real or a complete piss-take.

"Lucy Vallender finally feels "true to herself" since getting gender confirmation surgery and converting to Islam, saying that since the surgery three years ago and the conversion last September, "I felt happy and relieved at last the happiest I've ever felt in my life." She's been called the first transgender Muslim in the UK, but she said, "I bet there are more they are just frightened."

Vallender feels more comfortable in her own skin now more than ever before, but unfortunately some members of her new religious community don't feel the same way. Her local mosque in Swindon, Wiltshire, barred her from praying with the women and asked her many personal and judgmental questions, reports the Daily Mail.

"They asked me questions about my bra cup size, asked about my Adam's apple, about my period and asked to see my birth certificate," she said, and so returned home to pray there instead. "I hope people will change their attitudes and other people like me will realize they are free to just be themselves."

A spokesman for the mosque said, "Everybody is welcome, as long as they behave according to Islam," says the Daily Mail.

She converted to Islam last September, explaining that she had thought about it for a while and finally "did it because it is a nice religion -- so peaceful." Vallender continued, "I felt good and I had something to believe in."

She's found love as well as self-acceptance since her drastic life changes, and is now married to a Muslim man, Murad, whom she met on an online dating site. Though he did not know that she was trans at the time of their wedding, she commented, "he must have suspected it as he's seen my scars." She's only seen him twice since the wedding, but spoke warmly about him, commenting, "I love him, he's kind and soft spoken."

"Though he did not know that she was trans at the time of their wedding"

Woow

"She's only seen him twice since the wedding"

That we are even having these discussions shows how idiotic this legislation is. If it ever passes, dumb prosecutions will keep happening, lots of embarrassing press coverage and then get challenged in court.

Again, I ask why the SNP is wasting their time on this considering the state of the world.

Wild article. Person gets married.

"LGTB group" I see they've leapfrogged the bisexuals now

Also, is this person gunning to fill out every tick-box out there? Converting to Islam, converting to transgenderism... Did they join the Army to lose a limb, too?

Tootsweets23 · 04/02/2021 17:56

Quite @SunsetBeetch. How on earth they expect to stitch a party or movement back together after this is beyond me. Never mind run the country.

Transcript here. I just did this, so apologies for any mistakes, but I don't think I made any.

Joanna Cherry: Thank you Madam Deputy Speaker. Across our society and particularly in universities and the third sector, women, and some men, are losing their jobs, having their positions undermined, and their personal safety put in jeopardy, simply for questioning the ideology that any man can self identify as a woman and for speaking up for women's sex based rights under the Equality Act. Does the Leader of the House agree with me that all democrats should condemn such attacks on free speech and can we have a debate about free speech and the importance of sex as a protected characteristic under the Equality Act.

Jacob Rees-Mogg: Madam Deputy Speaker, may I begin by saying how sorry I am that the Honourable Lady has left the SNP front bench. Not because I regularly agree with her, because I don't think that I do. But because she has made it clear that she is one of the most intelligent and careful scrutinisers of Government, not just on her benches but in this House. And when I was on the Brexit Select Committee with her, her analysis and her questioning were, dare I say this, dare I admit this, second to none. And as I believe good Government depends on careful scrutiny, her removal from office is a loss to our democratic system. Dare I say, perhaps ungraciously that moan-a-lot [his nickname for Nicola Sturgeon] is responsible for this and it may be for reasons of internal SNP politicking, but to come to the Honourable Lady's point, free speech is fundamental and it is disgraceful that the Honourable Lady received threats for her views and from her removal from office, to the extent where the police had to be involved. Every member of this House should feel safe in whatever they say as long as it is within the law and is not effectively threatening violence. What is said in this House is of course completely protected, but it is outrageous that the Honourable Lady should've been placed in this position and can I commit to supporting freedom of speech? Absolutely Madam Deputy Speaker I can, that is what this this place exists for. That is what underpins our democracy. And much that I disagree with her on so many things, may I commend her courage in standing up for freedom speech and putting forward her views, clearly in a difficult and sensitive area but one where she has a right to be heard.

HeadPain · 04/02/2021 18:04

Oh I saw a mistake already,

"may I commend her courage in standing up for freedom speech and putting forward her views,"

freedom of speech, obviously.

The Daily Record decides to go with headline: "Joanna Cherry praised by Tory Jacob Rees-Mogg as he stirs up SNP infighting"

littlbrowndog · 04/02/2021 18:15

Well that’s the speech that sturgeon should have mad or yousaf

Not a squeak from them

littlbrowndog · 04/02/2021 18:16

Thanks headpain for doing this

Thingybob · 04/02/2021 18:19

Thanks for the link Headpain and thanks for explaining who moan-a-lot is.

merrymouse · 04/02/2021 18:23

I don't understand why they need to include cross-dressers.

If hate crime is defined by intent, surely the only relevant question is whether the perpetrator thinks the target is trans?

On the other hand, if you specifically include cross dressers presumably that means cross-dressers are protected regarded of whether somebody thinks they are trans.

Given that women tend to suffer abuse regardless of what they wear, this seems to be a specific bit of legislation designed to protect men, which is....odd.

SunsetBeetch · 04/02/2021 18:24

Say what you like about JRM, but he understands the importance of free speech and of respecting those you disagree with.

merrymouse · 04/02/2021 18:25

The other issue is that cross-dressing is often offensive and used to denigrate women, and lets be honest, trans people. How is this law supposed to work?

HeadPain · 04/02/2021 18:31

No problem. You're welcome.

HeadPain · 04/02/2021 18:50

This is the Daily Record article:

www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/politics/joanna-cherry-praised-tory-jacob-23442625

"Joanna Cherry praised by Tory Jacob Rees-Mogg as he stirs up SNP infighting.

The Conservative leader of the Commons lauded Joanna Cherry at length and took the opportunity to call Nicola Sturgeon a 'moan a lot' one more time....
....
...An SNP spokesman said: "Joanna Cherry was removed from the front bench because of unacceptable behaviour, which did not meet the standards expected of a front bench spokesperson - not because of the views she holds."

Hmmm, yeah right!

littlbrowndog · 04/02/2021 18:52

What was her unacceptable behaviour and who was it unacceptable to ?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 04/02/2021 18:53

Good grief.

I agree with Jacob Rees Mogg?

The world has actually gone mad.
