I'm sorry, not Scottish and am just a spectator in the SNP drama, but I've just seen this on Twitter twitter.com/thecourieruk/status/1358118146360496128?s=20

You'll find plenty of examples of not guilty verdicts being questioned as being wrong.

And? What are you saying? That we must either always or never question verdicts, and if we don't we're hypocrites? Hows about looking at the evidence+testimony in each individual case?

I'm sure acquittals in sex assault cases are far more often wrong than right - given the difficulty of reaching "beyond reasonable doubt" and the unlikeliness of false reports being carried through to trial. So you'll see a lot of such cases discussed here.

This case is exceptional.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 06/02/2021 20:29

It was on the BBC news, too Maud

It's as if someone has pressed "self destruct" at SNP HQ

MaudTheInvincible · 06/02/2021 20:36

It really looks that way!

littlbrowndog · 06/02/2021 20:40

Jeez.

It’s like a stanilist purge

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 06/02/2021 20:42

Why is Kirsty Blackman so important?

Didn't she step down as Deputy at WM because of mental health issues? Which is a perfectly sensible thing to do - but, I'm not aware of her being a huge mover and shaker. Have I missed something about her?

Whatdoyoudowhendemocracyfails · 06/02/2021 20:59

Hanvey’s card was already marked, he won his seat as an independent as the SNP had suspended him for alleged antisemitism in tweets from 2016.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-51723096

Interesting to compare that penalty compared to the blind eye turned to appalling misogyny tweeted by certain SNP members at Cherry and MacAlpine.

Whatdoyoudowhendemocracyfails · 06/02/2021 21:01

He signed the Women’s Pledge so he’s on the wrong side of the party divide - even though he’s gay.

Whatdoyoudowhendemocracyfails · 06/02/2021 21:04

Looks like he also raised concerns about self-ID weakening safeguarding and so has been labelled a transphobe.

ArabellaScott · 06/02/2021 21:13

'An SNP spokesperson said: “Neale Hanvey was given the opportunity to apologise for his actions, which are incompatible with the responsibilities of a frontbench spokesperson, including the requirement for teamwork and collective responsibility.

“He failed to do so and he has been removed from his position.”'

There will be no loyalty, except loyalty towards the Party. (Orwell, 1984, in case you can't tell)

Whatdoyoudowhendemocracyfails · 06/02/2021 21:15

Bit more here on Neale’s views re Self -ID and the conflict with women’s rights.

Alex Massie has another article in the Times today about Scotland's progressiveness:

Thank you Ig

Joanna Cherry in the New Statesman today

The question – do you believe or have you ever believed that women are adult human females? – is one I must answer in the affirmative, but it’s not a response that is popular with some who have the ear of the leadership.

From the NS article: 'That night I received a series of sinister and threatening messages on my phone, culminating in a threat of rape. I informed the police and decided to stay away from my home. The next day I learned that the man charged with threatening me is a member of the SNP.'

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/02/2021 22:23

Great article by Joanna.

littlbrowndog · 09/02/2021 23:32

Yeah great stuff Joanna 👏👏

Wow.
ThatIsNotMyUsername · 10/02/2021 18:49

What could a likely sentence be for someone making such calls?

BlackForestCake · 10/02/2021 19:18

Promotion to Women’s Officer?

ArabellaScott · 10/02/2021 19:22

www.holyrood.com/news/view,joanna-cherry-says-snp-party-member-threatened-to-rape-her

'The people who are propagating the idea that I’m transphobic are not only being unfair to me, they’re actually putting me in danger because of the level of abuse I’ve received, which included a death threat in 2019 and in the last week has included a series of very scary and frightening messages which have led to a man being arrested and charged with a serious offence. I can’t comment on that too much at the moment. I can’t tell you who the man was, but I can tell you he was a party member.”

Asked about accusations that she is being disloyal by simply talking about these issues, Cherry said she had no choice.

“It's a catch 22 and I don't really know what I'm supposed to do,” she said. “Am I just supposed to shut up and take it for the sake of the party? Ignore the fact that a party member has made serious threats against me, including sexual violence for the sake of the party? Is that what's being suggested?”'
I’ll post it again here for anyone who may have missed it -

“After the video footage was released, Mr Jackson said: "To be clear...I do not regard Alex Salmond as a 'sex pest', and any contrary impression is wrong."

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-52081790
Well he would say that- he was caught out speaking about a client on a train.

It doesn't alter what did come out - that Salmond was a touchy feely pest

Do you go for "sleepy cuddles" with your boss?

There's the often used cliché on here of "throwing women under a bus" Quite a few of you are happy to do just that- including trashing the statement issued by Rape Crisis Scotland.

No doubt this is just so boring- I'd still rather be boring than a hypocrite.

ArabellaScott · 10/02/2021 20:32

It doesn't alter what did come out - that Salmond was a touchy feely pest

On what basis are you claiming this 'came out'? Who said this, and when?

BlackForestCake · 10/02/2021 20:32

Why did Salmond’s many political enemies never bring his allegedly well-known sexpestiness up while he was first minister?
