@12frogsincoats

You lot will starve to death at this rate if you keep boycotting every company that ever dares support trans people.
The company isn't "supporting" trans people. It’s supporting bullying.

I'm not even gender critical but their actions have lost me as a customer.

BlackeyedSusan · 29/01/2021 19:24

John Lewis shot themselves in both feet. They used to be our preferred supplier of white goods. They are down a fridge freezer and two freezers.

Innocent wasn't on our buy list but flora was a possible.

Long memory and I hold a grudge really well.

SusannaSpider · 29/01/2021 19:36

We're just selling margarine.

I think that was Cravendale manufacturer Arla's take on things...we just make dairy products, nobody died from them taking a neutral stance.

Justhadathought · 29/01/2021 19:42

Innocent makes company decisions based on the opinions of some random who can’t distinguish the difference between to and too

I suspect in most cases it isn't the board or director of these companies who ratifies these posts. It is some random staffer.

Justhadathought · 29/01/2021 19:50

Why on earth do businesses do this? Did innocent even bother checking? Co-op back tracked pretty quickly and wasn't it Yorkshire Tea who deflected with great humour

I don't think they do. When a company becomes such a big brand It is, as someone says above, left to the social media team to deal with such issues. It is pretty similar scenario here on Mumsnet. Moderation is report led, and the action/non action taken really does depend which moderator is on duty.

@Enidblyton1

To be fair, Innocent Smoothies are SO packed with sugar, they probably shouldn’t be in anyone’s fridge anyway. I used to occasionally buy them for my children - then my friend (who worked at Innocent!) told me that most Innocent smoothies contain more sugar per 100gr than Coca Cola. My friend could take free smoothies, but never gave them to his own kids.
Yes, this.

Innocent were bought out by Coca-Cola.

Despite the folksy image and their protestations, just another multinational moneyspinner.

Patronising fuckers.

ArabellaScott · 29/01/2021 19:52

What did John Lewis do? (Not sure I want to know).

Cabinfever10 · 29/01/2021 20:07

Well i just told ds (with asd) why I won't be buying him anymore innocent smoothies he says he likes my homemade ones better. He's currently adding them to the bad company list Grin

NorthernIrishFeminist · 29/01/2021 20:20

Contrary to what a PP implied, I, like I suspect the majority here, boycott companies for not supporting women’s rights and for bullying women. I also boycott companies for racism and ableism and would boycott companies if they were bullying any trans people. Amongst the many vile and unfunny jokes I detest Frankie Boyle for are his jokes about transwomen a few years ago as they were violent and dehumanising. I do not boycott a company for supporting trans people.

It sounds like that PP assumes trans support always removes women’s rights Hmm

Furx · 29/01/2021 20:29

I found the Tweets in support of innocent interesting.

All of them that I saw were all ‘yay. Glad u hate transphobes too. I’ll buy your products ‘.

Not one that i saw from the anime avatar brigade was anything along the lines of ’i don’t agree with her and I don’t like her opinions but bullying isn’t cool‘

Im struggled to articulate this, but it seemed to me in general that the tone was those who were in support of innocent were far more gleeful that a woman got bullied rather that grateful

LakeGeneva · 29/01/2021 20:33

Yes it is very much "serves her right" rather than, well, anything at all about the issue, such as it is.

SirSamuelVimes · 29/01/2021 20:41

Well colour me surprised.
OwBist · 29/01/2021 20:45

To balance the scales somewhat, Arla refused to follow the "advice" of a tra. They are also a collective of smaller producers, so definitely a name for the "good company" column if looking for milk / dairy stuff.

(I've NC this week, but have been around for a while.)

PotholeParadies · 29/01/2021 20:49

Right. Arla stuff for the family then.

What did John Lewis do?!

MichelleofzeResistance · 29/01/2021 21:34

but it seemed to me in general that the tone was those who were in support of innocent were.... (I'm going to leave it there as I would very much like to add but won't Grin )

Yes. The semi literate, childish nastiness and overt, gleeful gynephobia is so very, very common on these twitter threads. It was one of the things that first really convinced me when I first began to question and have concerns; you rarely to never see an intelligent, civil, well written, rational response putting the activist/lobby view.

Gurufloof · 29/01/2021 22:40

Keeping everything crossed that major gin brands do not follow Innocent’s lead
Bladnoch distillery take note, I will not buy from you if you go woke, and for certain no more innocent drinks ever for me. I'm the only one who drinks them.
I wont starve

ellyeth · 29/01/2021 23:49

Innocent was originally started, I think, by a couple of entrepreneurs. I can remember them visiting our work restaurant in a central London solicitors firm about 25 years ago to market their product. I believe Innocent was sold to Coca Cola a few years ago.

I don't know if it is still the case but, although the drinks were marketed as being healthy, they contained large amount of sugar.

AbsintheFriends · 29/01/2021 23:56

Method? What did they do?

methodproducts.co.uk/drag-cleans/

Considering the vast majority of their customer base and, let's face it, the people who are stuck with the shitwork of cleaning, are women, it seems ill-judged (at best) to choose men dressed up as hyper-sexualised parodies of women while doing a bit of performance housework to sell their products.

Bloodyhamabeads · 30/01/2021 00:06

I thought this was an interesting comment from the guy who originally tweeted Innocent...classic abuser tactic. Is there a name for this?

I can’t articulate very well what I mean, but it reminds me of when two siblings are fighting and one retaliates and the child that instigated it says ‘you’re overreacting, it’s not that bad’.

I really can't get worked up about the Method ad. If anything it's amusing more than anything - the idea of doing cleaning all glammed up like that. I also don't think they look hyper- sexualised- it's so OTT it isn't sexual. I expect to be told I'm missing the point but that ad doesn't bother me at all. I hadn't heard of Method and there's a couple of products I like the look of.
VampireTheBuffetSlayer · 30/01/2021 00:50

I won't go into details because it's too long but Innocent once ran an advert that was misleading and a few of us wrote to them to point out why. They pulled the ad. I think this is one brand we might be able to win over with people power and gentle persuasion. It might put them on the fence but worth contacting them with your thoughts.

felineflutter · 30/01/2021 01:06

I see this all the time when trying to moderate items it is sometimes impossible not to do the wrong thing due to pathways of reporting possible hate speech etc and unfortunately women's voices are squashed.

Why bother ? There are plenty of other smoothie makers- likely cheaper, less sugar laden and not owned by Coca-Cola.

Innocent had it's chance- they could have just ignored the little twerp- they didn't and they blew it.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 30/01/2021 03:07

Unfortunately I can't see coca-cola giving a shit.

rabbitwoman · 30/01/2021 07:07

I am having a wonderful fantasy this morning that flash Maggie gets a huge delivery of complimentary Innocent smoothies and they prove to be the masters of PR after all......
