"Frankie has had many controversies in his career, including making jokes about the Queen and people with disabilities. Frankie says that it’s every comedian’s job, to different degrees, to, “take things that people would normally find offensive and make them funny.”

"Frankie does not have positive words to say about Ricky Gervais as a stand-up comedian. “If you’re a stand-up watching him, you feel like, ‘oh, that’s someone doing a version of what we do,’” he says. “But really, it’s that I saw him doing his routine about trans people and I thought it was very lazy [in a 2018 Netflix special, Gervais did a routine about Caitlyn Jenner and trans identity]. I would like him to have the same respect for trans people as he seems to have for animals. I don’t think that’s a lot to ask.”

"Just because Ricky Gervais self-identifies as a stand-up comedian, am I supposed to say that he is one? It’s f*ing political correctness gone mad!”

I haven't heard the original source, but that line makes me suspect that maybe Frankie Boyle wasn't being serious in his criticism of Gervais?

Nah, he absolutely meant it.
merrymouse · 30/12/2020 10:34

I am sure the 'political correctness gone mad' line is directed at people who talk about 'political correctness gone mad'. The target of the joke is not people who 'self identify'.

SunsetBeetch · 30/12/2020 10:36

This is what he had to say about cancer sufferers:

Agree. He's mocking people who might say that sort of thing.
queenofknives · 30/12/2020 11:28

Isn't it amazing that they can ban the gentle surreal humour of Graham Linehan, and the acerbic observations of John Cleese, but at the same time celebrate a man who makes vile jokes about violent rape and at the expense of disabled children.

To be clear, I am not calling for censorship of anyone. I just think it's amazing what the woke consider to be unspeakable and what they consider to be completely fine.

ChalkDinosaur · 30/12/2020 11:29

The Gervais joke was shit and transphobia though.

ChalkDinosaur · 30/12/2020 11:30

Transphobic I mean. Damn autocorrect.

SunsetBeetch · 30/12/2020 11:42

The joke RG in question.

Frankie Boyle has said far, far worse many times over. That's what most people are pulling him up for: his sheer hypocrisy.

Can Ricky Gervais really punch down at Caitlyn Jenner (who, btw, doesn't seem to have a problem with acknowledging they were once a man called Bruce Jenner, see here: www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2017/may/08/caitlyn-jenner-bruce-transitioning-kardashians-reality-tv-star ), the way Frankie Boyle has punched down at disabled children, AIDS sufferers, cancer sufferers and women?

SunsetBeetch · 30/12/2020 11:52

Now this is funny.

Thank god for the comedians who refuse to bow to wokeism.

Frankie Boyle
merrymouse · 30/12/2020 11:57

Agree Sunset. Gervais has certainly said things that some people have found hurtful and offensive. However, his philosophy is consistent:

“I think being a provocateur isn't necessarily setting out to cause offence because offence by definition is subjective - I don't think you can say a joke is offensive.”

Boyle has been much, much more offensive than Gervais, without apparently sharing Gervais' philosophy.

SunsetBeetch · 30/12/2020 12:02

Frankie Boyle should have had his own BBC show called Mock the Weak

Ba-dum-tish.

AnyFucker · 30/12/2020 12:14

The target of the joke is a celebrity killing someone in their car," he continues, referencing thefatal, multi-vehicle accidentJenner was involved in near Malibu, Calif. in 2015."Let's not forget that, shall we? A celebrity killing someone in their car, running home and popping on a dress—that's the target of the joke, just so we're clear."

This was Ricky's response to criticism of his "transphobic" joke. Clue: it wasn't transphobic at all. He was pretty much saying that if Bruce Jenner can call himself a woman then he can criticise women drivers (that kill people with impunity)

rabbitwoman · 30/12/2020 12:25

If we are on the subject of jokes and the transgender agender, it baffles me that it is never bought up on the usual satirical shows - have I got news for you, mock the week, the last leg - I KNOW JKR was heavily nominated for Dick of the Year but they never even touched it.

Is it that the public at large really don't care and I operate in a very small echo chamber where its the main subject of discussion?

I find it hard to believe it is not on their radar - JKR is probably the most famous author on the planet and this is huge in the Harry Potter world. Adam Hills must know, his new puppy was named Albus Dumbledog.

Is it that they keep their mouth shut because actually, their opinions are not the populist ones and you can only risk speaking up on the subject if you tow a specific line (a la Boyle, pascoe, flo and Joan et al)

If that is the case then WHY? I can appreciate and sympathise with anyone who has the opposite view to me on this subject without hatred or loss of respect, why is this not reciprocal?

"Interestingly" in SunsetBeetch 's link, one of Frankie Boyle's "jokes" is:

“I had a friend come up to me and say that she had breast cancer and that she was going to cycle the Great Wall Of China.

“I felt like saying: ‘You should be lying at home in bed, playing with your tits before they drop off.'”

Women, actual women, do not play with their tits. Is there any difference in the old "Hey lads, phwoarr missus" type of men talking about women playing with their tits, and these new men talking about playing with their own tits?

StellaAndCrow · 30/12/2020 12:55

His other "joke" about cancer sufferers is

“What is it about people with cancer that suddenly think they can run the f*ing marathon?
“And you want to say: ‘You have no chance of winning.'” He added: “But there’s a good chance that you won’t have to pay.”

What is funny about that? What makes it a joke rather than just abuse?

BettyFloop · 30/12/2020 13:29

Frankie Boyle is the new Bernard Manning - both of them revolting human beings and neither of them witty, funny or comedic.

Deliriumoftheendless · 30/12/2020 13:35

I’d rather watch South Park.

You know from everything I've seen from Frankie Boyle regarding the trans topic I am pretty sure he is what the Trans community would refer to as a 'chaser' someone, usually men who have a sexual fetish for trans people on the basis of them being trans.
