"Frankie has had many controversies in his career, including making jokes about the Queen and people with disabilities. Frankie says that it’s every comedian’s job, to different degrees, to, “take things that people would normally find offensive and make them funny.”

"Frankie does not have positive words to say about Ricky Gervais as a stand-up comedian. “If you’re a stand-up watching him, you feel like, ‘oh, that’s someone doing a version of what we do,’” he says. “But really, it’s that I saw him doing his routine about trans people and I thought it was very lazy [in a 2018 Netflix special, Gervais did a routine about Caitlyn Jenner and trans identity]. I would like him to have the same respect for trans people as he seems to have for animals. I don’t think that’s a lot to ask.”

I like Andrew Lawrence's take on this.

About the only thing wrong in that was '...at the expense of my own personal integrity', because I'm not convinced FB had any of that to spend.

Perfection.

I remember Frankie Boyle appearing on the comedy scene years ago and found him shockingly funny. Then watched with utter horror and disgust him launching into Katie Price & her son. There is no excuse for that behaviour. None. I haven’t been able to watch him since that day.

And Katie, if you’re on here, we’ll done for being able to handle that depth of shite.

Ricky:

"I look down on everyone equally."

I have no desire to investigate, but Boyle's previous jokes about transvestites and women, and his vociferous reaction to the cardinal sin of transphobia, suggests a chaser to me.

It's a great get out of jail free card. Do what you want, hurt whoever you want - and then just punt out a "trans rights" now and then for full absolution.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 29/12/2020 14:30

He just hates women.
He is the king of the incels.

PlantMam · 29/12/2020 14:34

Yeah. Let’s see him do some kind of charitable fundraiser for autistic kiddies or something, before declaring him a changed man, eh, Bethany?

dyslek · 29/12/2020 14:57

Frankie Boyle is a tax dodger. When someone pointed out how incongrous this was with his left wing politics he blathered something about how it was ok that he did not pay tax as he was not supporting millitarism. Total bullshit.
He is a self serving none entity, woman haters come ten to the dime.

FannyCann · 29/12/2020 14:57

He is the king of the incels

And that is part of the problem - surely this type of humour encourages casual misogyny and cruelty. It's actively harmful.

WeeBisom · 29/12/2020 15:10

Haha, Ricky Gervais saying "I look down on everyone equally.' This is the thing. You can't accuse Ricky of being a hypocrite or singling people out for special consideration. I remember in one of his stand up routines he said something like people were happy to laugh at AIDS jokes, but gasped in horror when he started to tell cancer jokes - the point is that everyone is going to find different things offensive. Sure, Ricky tells jokes about Caitlin Jenner but he tells jokes about everybody. In the case of Frankie Boyle, who certainly hasn't shied away from controversial shock comedy, I'm wondering why he's decided this particular demographic of people are being treated like a sacred caste and can't be joked about - it's almost like blasphemy. He can't go with the 'punching down' excuse, because he insults disabled kids and women!

PearPickingPorky · 29/12/2020 15:33

We know Frankie Boyle doesn't think transwomen are women because he thinks women are fair game for the most violent, sexually violent, and abusive and nasty "jokes", and transwomen should be a protected caste that nobody can say anything about.

He is purely using this as another way to abuse women in plain sight.

TheMarzipanDildo · 29/12/2020 15:36

Boyles humour has never particularly bothered me, and I find a lot of his jokes funny. But why tf is he criticising Ricky Gervais for doing exactly what he does?

rabbitwoman · 29/12/2020 15:50

Sounds like a huge derailing segwey..... But bear with me..... this strikes me:

I was watching the awfully sad documentary about Lindy Chamberlain, who was put in jail for murdering her baby daughter when actually the poor little soul was eaten by a dingo. Lindy seems like an extraordinary and very strong woman and you know what? She COLLECTS jokes about dingos.

Should Ricky or frankie make a joje about her - she would add it to her collection. She does not need protection from nasty, cruel jokes; possibly Katie price doesn't either. Or kids with down syndrome, or cancer patients - there are some things that we consider cannot be joked about because of poor taste-- but I have seen stand up routines on the holocaust, on slavery, child abuse....... Humour is something we all use to cope with some of the worst situations life can foist upon us.

WHAT is it with transgender rights, then? Why so untouchable?

rabbitwoman · 29/12/2020 15:52

I feel at the heart of this transgender agender there is something that someone does not want scrutinised, someone or some organisation or some shadowy body of people does not want anyone thinking too hard about exactly what is happening.....

dyslek · 29/12/2020 15:53

Because its about the sacred right of men to dominate women. And men dont like that laughed at.
BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 29/12/2020 16:11

There is something intrinsically ridiculous about a person fooling themselves.

ArabellaScott · 29/12/2020 16:13

'Men are afraid women will laugh at them. Women are afraid men will kill them'.

StandWithYou · 29/12/2020 16:20

Good humour makes you think about an issue in a different way as you laugh especially if you aren’t sure whether you should laugh or not. What jokes could you make about transgender ideology without it causing someone to start to think about it and then questioning it? The whole edifice would then start to come down.

I listened to part of the podcast and it was interesting. I found his comments about why can’t RG be a bit nicer very ironic though. He talked about the context of jokes and how the newspapers printed them for shock value without looking at the context. I thought back to when I first heard the joke about Katie Price and her child. It is similar to the jokes about the female Olympians. They weren’t funny, there was nothing there to make me think about the issue. I just felt sick and there is no context that would ever make them funny. Has he ever made similar comments about Mo Farah, the male rowers or Anthony Joshua? I wonder why?

SunsetBeetch · 29/12/2020 16:21

@PlantMam

Yeah. Let’s see him do some kind of charitable fundraiser for autistic kiddies or something, before declaring him a changed man, eh, Bethany?
Bethany seems to be very much on the TRA side of things: people want to debate her existence and take her rights away, the BBC is terribly transphobic - that sort of thing..
Doyoumind · 29/12/2020 16:45

Well, I would say Bethany is part of the context. To get work he needed a new found wokeness as his style of comedy was no longer in favour. How better to prove your rehabilitation and show you aren't transphobic than to work with someone who is trans? Rather cynical.

CousinKrispy · 29/12/2020 17:07

Ok many thanks to whoever on here recommended comedian Sarah Kendall (currently has a three-parter available on BBC Sounds). I'm halfway through the first episode going back and forth between sobbing and laughing my head off, which is down to Sarah's talent and not my womanly hormones (as FB would probably try to claim). She is f'in hilarious!!

yourhairiswinterfire · 29/12/2020 17:55

JKR: "Biological sex exists, it's meaningful to a lot of women and anyone same sex attracted."

TRAs spend months and months relentlessly detailing the sick shit they're going to do to her, they're going to kill her, they get a RIP hashtag trending and pretend they mean RIP her career, not her.

Boyle: Uses actual transphobic slurs, jokes about rape, disabled children etc. Unlike with JKR, the evidence of this is out there for all to see.

TRAS: Well that was ages ago, and people do change (apart from 12 year old children who think they're in the wrong body though, they'll never change their minds in the future. Never ever.)

Wonder what it could be about transactivism that attracts so many misogynists...a real mystery why such men would be drawn to their cause 🤔

AnyFucker · 29/12/2020 18:09

Katie Price was not ok with the "jokes" about Harvey
