"Frankie has had many controversies in his career, including making jokes about the Queen and people with disabilities. Frankie says that it’s every comedian’s job, to different degrees, to, “take things that people would normally find offensive and make them funny.”

"Frankie does not have positive words to say about Ricky Gervais as a stand-up comedian. “If you’re a stand-up watching him, you feel like, ‘oh, that’s someone doing a version of what we do,’” he says. “But really, it’s that I saw him doing his routine about trans people and I thought it was very lazy [in a 2018 Netflix special, Gervais did a routine about Caitlyn Jenner and trans identity]. I would like him to have the same respect for trans people as he seems to have for animals. I don’t think that’s a lot to ask.”

The difference between the two is that Ricky doesn't (seem to) hate women, but incel-like hatred oozes out of Boyle.

ScreamingBeans · 28/12/2020 22:45

I honestly think the only reason FB has jumped on the TWAW bandwagon is because he knows that if he waves that flag, it will provide excellent cover for the vile stuff he's said about every other marginalised group, which he knows is unacceptable to a new generation of audiences.

The audience he's aiming at will excuse every other ism as long as you toe the line on TWAW. He'll be waved through as long as he sticks to that. Without it, he's just a much nastier Bernard Manning.

FannyCann · 28/12/2020 23:05

Perfect summing up ScreamingBeans Glitterball

Yes I know that's a glitter ball but I always thought it was a grenade so I am awarding you a grenade for FB. Wink

ClaireP20 · 28/12/2020 23:46

@Neolara

Has anyone listened to his interview with Louis Theroux? I thought it was pretty interesting. His childhood sounds bleak.
I have and yes, it was really interesting and apart from the trans issue (why?!?!) he came over well
LittleRa · 28/12/2020 23:47

Interesting conversation between Ricky Gervais and Sara Pascoe (who has been mentioned on this thread) about Ricky’s Caitlin Jenner jokes, and other controversial joke topics more widely- listen from around 51mins;

ClaireP20 · 28/12/2020 23:47

@HecatesCats

But if you look at the end result, his 'advocacy' amounts to attacking women. So maybe - entirely in character?

Yes, and he's not the only established misogynist for whom trans right is a brilliant fit.

Excellent point.
isadorapolly · 28/12/2020 23:51

He really is creepy isnt he. Those eyes (shudder)

littlbrowndog · 28/12/2020 23:59

Ricky gervais on a leaflet he saw on safe sex

Number 10. Just come out of a window 😂

Number 7. Just come on his back

Number 5 just come in his hair

Wear a shower cap for safe sex just in case the aim in number 7 goes wrong

dyslek · 29/12/2020 00:50

Also a tax dodger, unlike JKR.

Funny how the modern left express their values.

Gingerkittykat · 29/12/2020 03:58

Frankie Boyle has somehow rehabilitated himself in the public's eye, from his utterly vile jokes about Harvey Price (and if we are talking about punching down it would be hard to find someone more vulnerable) to having a series on BBC 2 about Scotland. It seems some people, including him, have very short memories.

LunaNorth · 29/12/2020 06:35

@StellaAndCrow

He's just horrific. From the article that allmywhat links:

'And, since it was 2012 – when little girls across the UK were watching and admiring sporting stars such as Rebecca Adlington, Jessica Ennis and Victoria Pendleton – Boyle’s first instinct was to cram these stellar female athletes back in the sex-fantasy box, and describe himself masturbating about them, raping or otherwise abusing them. Adlington was “a bit of a challenge-wank”; Ennis “I couldn’t go out with Jessica Ennis. Couldn’t go out with someone who wouldn’t feel it when I punched them in the stomach. I’d end up having to pay for an abortion.”; Pendleton: “Victoria Pendleton can lift twice her own body weight. Which is sexy, ’cause it means she still wouldn’t be able to throw me off.” '

'His response to a female heckler was: “I’ll abuse you so badly your gynaecologist will think you’ve been in a fing car crash,” and again: “I reckon your pussy has seen more action than fing Helmand.” '

Those words have chilled me. Is that not hate speech?
donquixotedelamancha · 29/12/2020 06:40

Interesting conversation between Ricky Gervais and Sara Pascoe

Thanks for that Ra.

I love both Pascoe and Gervais. Sarah is very clever and a little obsessed with sex/gender.

On one level it's great listening to her hold her own and argue with someone as bolshie as Ricky but OTOH I do find it irritating that she seems utterly unable to comprehend why other people hold different views.

That section of the interview was a lovely example of two people having a blazing row while pretending to have a friendly intellectual discussion.

donquixotedelamancha · 29/12/2020 06:57

Those words have chilled me. Is that not hate speech?

The argument that it isn't hate speech (in the way it would be if Bernard Manning said that about black people) is that the comedian is mocking those prejudiced views by making him/herself the target of the joke as a pretend bigot.

I think it's a perfectly fine argument. When RG, Sarah Silverman or Jimmy Carr do this sort of joke they are careful to signpost the irony. I always think people who take blanket offence at a joke out of context are idiots.

Thing is, FB does no signposting. I don't see how you could possibly infer that he doesn't hate Katie Price, and he clearly does hate RG. Even taken in context it's hard to think FB's views on women are not hateful.

merrymouse · 29/12/2020 07:06

Has he ever apologised for the Harvey Price jokes?

AyrshireAmbler49 · 29/12/2020 07:08

I think FB and RG are both great.
Frankie is always giving women and people of colour platforms on his shows and his writing is second to none on the elaborate scale.

Clockstop · 29/12/2020 07:11

I went to see frankie Boyle when he was peak mock the week fame. He was awful! Wed heard all the material already on mock the week, his warm up guy was funnier, and there was a heckler that he couldn't handle at all, he ended up getting really angry and calling security. It was bizarre and the whole audience was tense like we were witnessing him having a breakdown Confused

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 29/12/2020 07:15

I loathe FB for all the aforementioned reasons.

But I also refuse to watch anything with RG in after his... well, I can’t even bring myself to type the word, but his deeply offensive comments using a hideous term for Down’s Syndrome.

laudemio · 29/12/2020 07:17

Sarah Pascoe clever? I think not.

LunaNorth · 29/12/2020 07:18

@laudemio

Sarah Pascoe clever? I think not.
Did you know she’s a vegan?

She doesn’t like to mention it though.

SelfIcellation · 29/12/2020 07:29

I think it takes a certain amount of talent to understand the old Shakespeare trope of humour and tragedy going well together, and Ricky has that. He also writes with compassion. He has said, people confuse the topic of the joke with the target. He sees things, like the cult of celebrity, or the care sector, or trans issues, and writes with wit and yes, sometimes with that level of uncomfortable truth, but if he doesn't say it, who will? (See the Golden Globes earlier this year. Eight minutes of toe-curling truth telling)

Frankie Boyle doesn't have any compassion or subtlety at all. He targets physical attributes and denigrates women and disability. He is as shallow as they come. Someone on Twitter said Ricky is never cruel to people, whereas Boyle is. Boyle doesn't have the intelligence to see the wider picture, he can only see what's in front if him. He is told something is bad, therefore he agrees with it, but when you ask him to explain why, he can't.

From Twitter, I think Ricky is enjoying the attention. Grin

NotaplasticGael · 29/12/2020 08:22

Poor little inadequate Francis Boyle is full of envy. He doesn't like himself much does he? Do ya Frankie?

Your hypocrisy is getting you some attention though so crack on with being the pathetic embarrassment to Scotland that you are.

Vile wee (to use his expression) "challenge wank" that he is.

Sheleg · 29/12/2020 09:08

The TRA agenda is an absolute gift to men like Boyle. A perfect (and socially sanctioned) receptacle for their misogyny.

FannyCann · 29/12/2020 09:44

I had no idea he had said such disgusting things as quoted in that article - I've just seen it on twitter too. It's absolutely disgraceful and in no way should anyone defend it as "edgy" comedy or any other type of joke. Imagine if a bloke at the office made jokes like that. At the very least I would expect women to log it as evidence of sexual harassment and a culture of sexual harassment in the workplace if it wasn't acted on. But I would expect an appointment with HR and more likely a P45 as a likely consequence. And surely women in the dating pool would see it as a massive red flag and steer clear. It simply wouldn't be socially acceptable to crack "jokes" like that so why should a so called comedian be able to pass it off as a joke?

BraveBananaBadge · 29/12/2020 09:54

Aaaaaaand... there it is 😂. Damien Barr, much?
