Has announced new pronouns.

Again, apologies if this is being discussed already.

"They're not women's clothes, they're my clothes" seems to have been lost in the mists of time.

Sorry, I meant wiki not twitter.

BraveBananaBadge · 20/12/2020 21:08

Yes Lysistra, perhaps one of the reasons this is so hard to deal with is Eddie is not doing a single thing that would be expected of someone transitioning, at all. They are no different than they were yesterday in any physical way, except now we all have to say they are a woman, and if we don’t go along with it, we’re monsters. It is gaslighting. It is appropriation. That’s not something I feel the need to say about transitioners in general. Something about this feels really off.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2020 21:10

@vesuvia

It is not just pronouns - Izzard is now described as an "actress" in the Wikipedia article about Izzard.
That may be an overenthusiastic editor. It's back to 'actor' now, with comment in the history 'Actor is a non gender specific description of someone who acts. The term applies to all genders'.

It might be fun to see what some of the 'vandalism' was.

RozWatching · 20/12/2020 21:13

@TinselAngel

The gradual escalation and pushing of boundaries that Eddie is inflicting on the British public, is very familiar to trans widows.
And lesbianism seems to be the next frontier to be conquered. And still some people cheer this on.
NeurotreeWenceslas · 20/12/2020 21:22

Barracker's pronoun speech works well here.

my phone knows her name off by heart now

'to be conquered' might be a bit optimistic I'm afraid.

In woke circles it is now considered aggressive and a statement of hostility to name yourself lesbian if you are female, as it implies that you may proceed to actual heresy any minute. The polite term considered more acceptable is queer, which makes clear that you don't do anything nasty like exclude male people from your body because of being homosexual.

If however you are male when you name yourself lesbian, this is a cue for much support and celebration.

Lesbian groups have been intentionally targeted to end female only provision, or sex based/female homosexual groups. There are no few that ended up disbanding, or moving underground and no longer advertising their presence in order to be able to continue providing a female only group supporting female lesbians.

This is seen in some circles as 'progress'.

@mollscroll

I think the fawning is intended to drown out the sound of the cognitive dissonance clanging internally.

Eddie is doing our work for us. Everyone can see what this is.

Exactly this.

Very happy to see Eddie get more airtime and I'm sure he'll do great work.

BewaretheIckabog · 20/12/2020 21:34

I m still very confused.

Eddie is a very intelligent person who has thought a lot about this.

Has Eddie always been female / woman / girl?

If not, when did he become a woman ?

Eddie’s position seems very different from the trans people Mermaids etc talk about because they are certain about which sex they should be from childhood.

Eddie seems gender fluid which to me comes under the LGBTQ+ umbrella but is very different from living with absolutely certainty you are the opposite sex.

Eddie sounds like he wants to enjoy his girlie side not that he’s a woman.

callistography · 20/12/2020 21:42

I honestly don't give a damn who people fancy, what they choose to live like/wear etc but it really really fucks me off when men are trying to be known as women.
The main thing that really gets me angry is when a biological male wants to use a women's toilet. That's a huge huge no for me for safety issues. If you have a penis you stay the fuck out of the women's toilets.
Then we have the huge issue surrounding the rights of women being eroded due to biological males demanding rights due to being trans. Women should not be losing hard-earned and long overdue rights to any biological male. Trans people do deserve rights/protection but not at the expense of biological women

ArabellaScott · 20/12/2020 21:44

I haven't rtft, so not sure if the daily mail article was posted.

Twitter is good for fast spreading of information. The tabloids are good for gauging how the majority see things. General response seems to be - Oh, do bore off.

@ThatIsNotMyUsername

As someone on twitter pointed out - autobiography out now just in time for Christmas.
Surely the arrival of the Christchild was arranged with a view to eventually helping the Izzard autobiography along?

(You'll find that the hardback identifies as a softcover if you discard the dust-jacket).

Eddie's wikipedia automatically changes pronouns when he or switches from boy to girl mode

🤪🤪🤪
ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2020 23:54

The star told The Mail on Sunday in September: ‘When I’m in girl mode I am happy to be known as “she” and when I’m in boy-mode, I am happy to be known as “he”. But I am equally happy to be referred to as Eddie or “Hey mate”.’

Hey mate, you're 58... sorry, but that's 'middle-aged' mode. Nowt wrong with that, grow up.

cantdothisnow1 · 21/12/2020 00:04

I wonder whether this is performance art at its finest.

I'm holding on to a glimmer of hope that this is a deliberate performance to prove the opposite.

I realise i will probably be disappointed.

TinaTurnoff · 21/12/2020 00:12

This is of interest to me because my 14yo daughter is caught up in trans rights. As with all teens, when they adopt a righteous-rights issue, whatever they might be, I want to give her space to work stuff out in her own head without adult-debating her out of it. She doesn’t know who Eddie Izzard is. He’s old and irrelevant to her scope of reference. If I said to her ‘see this bloke? Older than your dad? How’d you feel of he was in the queue for the bathroom?’ I’m afraid she would think I’m trying to brainwash her against trans people, which to her is an absolute, unquestionable entitlement. I don’t want to teach her to be fearful, and I struggle to work out how to say to her that she shouldn’t concede her feminine turf.

I think the hardest thing about this is that Eddie has gone from being a truly brave trailblazer to someone so insufferably self-obsessed that it's hard to describe quite how disappointing and crushing it is to witness this cynical announcement. He's also smart as fuck so you can't even tell yourself that he's maybe just too daft to understand or appreciate the consequences of his actions. Gutted isn't the word.

But hey, neat way to rebrand and relaunch your career 2020 style, Eddie.

Datun · 21/12/2020 06:34

This is the expansion of language, the invention of new ways of talking about things that were always there but which there were no words for.

You're kidding right? There's always been words for this. Eddie themself has been a self described transvestite for decades.

The concept you're describing is appropriation. The word woman (or girl, as late middle aged Eddie prefers) is already taken. It has a meaning. No other meaning is offered.

Therefore:

appropriate verb

take (something) for one's own use, typically without the owner's permission.

See? The reason you think are 'no words' for what you describe is because any definition you attempt makes no sense. Humans can't change sex. A woman is an adult human female. A girl is a juvenile human female.

You have ' no words', not us. We have loads.

The progress of the heterosexual cross-dressers' movement is certainly impressive, from Beaumont Society's 'no homosexuals' policy to asking to be included in LGB+ and then appropriating all the useful words.
ErrolTheDragon · 21/12/2020 08:47

John Cleese apparently referred to Izzard as 'the lost Python'. I'd quite like to know what he thinks.
