Has announced new pronouns.

Again, apologies if this is being discussed already.

"They're not women's clothes, they're my clothes" seems to have been lost in the mists of time.

@Shedbuilder

MissLucyEylesbarrow, I posted the article on my FB account and got five likes for it but the two people who replied (both Labour Party lesbians) ignored the content and basically said 'It's Brendan O'Neill, who cares what he says, and it's in the Spectator.'

I've responded that there's such a gag on discussing this issue that it takes someone like Brendan O'Neill and a publication like the Spectator to raise it. But until more trusted and less controversial journalists and publications are prepared to say it, they'll be able to ignore it.

Yes agree - it's frustrating, though O'Neill does bring it on himself by being contrarian about everything. But it's annoying when left-leaning people dismiss everything in the Spectator/DM/Times/Telegraph: it's so narrow-minded (and ditto right-wing people who do the same with the Guardian & BBC).
The marathon running was quite unhinged. It's a remarkable feat and he achieved something amazing, but, if he was mine I'd have been taking him to a doctor for a mental health assessment.

He does seem to have a track record of obsessive behaviour.

inews.co.uk/culture/eddie-izzard-people-still-shout-abuse-streets-77537
I was only half listening but EI did day something on PAOTY about it being easier to run the marathons than not run them, which would possibly fit in with mania?

@carefulvulvadriver

I actually really hope EI goes for an AWSL seat. They are probs the most well known trans woman in the uk and it will be the perfect way to draw attention to the ridiculousness of it. Bring it on
I think my DH finally and genuinely gets it now. I dont think DH really understood or believed that there are men out there who would claim to be women, but now EI, after all his years of claiming manhood and just liking wearing make up and dresses, etc. has pretty much peaked him.

The penny has finally dropped that there are Men who will be going into womens changing rooms, toilets and other female only spaces.

So thanks Eddie 👏

ArabellaScott · 23/12/2020 14:12

Yep, I do think EI will shed a lot of light on the subject. Claiming to be a lesbian, for example, will bump up hard against most people's cognitive dissonance.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 23/12/2020 14:37

Yes, Tinsel - and he ran 43 marathons in 51 days, and then went back a few years later to do 28 in 28 days, and now 31 in 31 days with an hour of stand up tacked on www.comedy.co.uk/people/news/6113/eddie-izzard-endurance-gigging/

What is the difference between someone raising money for a good cause and having an exercise addiction?

Also, sports bra issues.

(mods - I used male pronouns as the article written from Eddie's own press release used male pronouns. Presume he's in boy mode again)

SisterWendyBuckett · 23/12/2020 14:42

One has to wonder what EI is running from...

pinbinpin · 23/12/2020 14:47

Are the large breasts a surgical enhancement then? I assumed was a bra as nothing has been mentioned about surgery. if so, good luck with that. As a woman with large breasts who tries to run I have spent 20 odd years trying to find a sports bra that works and dealing with all sorts of sweat rashes, discomfort, fungal infections and back pain. Welcome to girl-hood! No breast reduction surgery for me though, of course, unless I want to spend 10k on it, as my breast issues are just common or garden women's issues.

Melroses · 23/12/2020 14:47

I hadn't realised the extent of the marathoning - I thought it was just a one-off series.

I do remember wondering why it was that a middle-aged stand up comedian was doing something that you never really hear of life-time trained athletes doing ?

PotholeParadies · 23/12/2020 14:53

EI has spoken of a persistent feeling that a big enough achievement, like the marathoning, might bring EI's mother back.

Seems like a lifetime spent in the Bargaining phase of grief. I recognise that feeling from losing loved ones as an adult. I can't imagine what it is like to have a bereavement at such a young age.

That's interesting and seems rather relevant.
vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 23/12/2020 14:59

Yes, and he's now nearly 60, Melroses.

Richard Gadd won the Comedy award at Edinburgh Fringe with a show about his sexual assault - he ran as a way of managing his distress. He can't run now, he's knackered his knees, and that is a man in his 20s who wasn't running hyper long distances. The way Gadd describes his running is really moving. It was a brilliant show. www.refinery29.com/en-gb/richard-gadd-comedian-sexual-assault-help

The Spectator makes such an interesting read, on the one hand there are columnists like Rod Liddle who I loathe, but on the other hand there are articles like this one about EI where a journalist is actually able to say what most people think.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 23/12/2020 19:38

Bravo Brendan 👏🏼

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to be so free with words without deletion, scorn or hatred...

Why are we not allowed to speak the truth any more?

RozWatching · 23/12/2020 20:12

@TheChampagneGalop

thecritic.co.uk/male-transgenderism-is-sexism-on-steroids/ The Critic shamelessly allows the f word.
Excellent piece by Jo Bartosch as usual.

I don't know why but I thought Brendan O'Neill was one of those cranks who think that it's all women's fault. A breath of fresh air indeed. It's great to see so many different journalists covering this stuff and "getting" it.

BBC Radio 4 Extra are repeating the 5 part serialisation of EI’s 2017 book. Presenter referred to EI using female pronouns and the synopsis on Sounds app uses she/her throughout. Next stop, all-woman shortlist. It would be interesting to know why the BBC chose to repeat this at this particular time.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 29/12/2020 14:37

Indeed.

I finally got to watch the portrait artist of the year.

Interesting also that they chose the portrait which was the most open to interpretation.

And did not choose the two which were a more accurate portrayal.

FlorisFigure · 29/12/2020 14:43

Last year I had a particularly gory and gruesome miscarriage and I developed sepsis so I was in hospital waiting for my infection to clear before the doctors could perform a D&C. However, during this time I was passing enormous blood clots and I took Eddies’s name in vain. I told the gynaecologist that the day Eddie had a spotlight up her vag with 3 people picking out blood clots and tissue with a set of forceps and that was nothing compared to proper childbirth, and then we have fibroids and the menopause to look forward to as reward, then and only then, when Eddie can match and beat this, would I concede that Eddie is a woman.

HopeClearwater · 29/12/2020 15:05

Damn right. But you’re probably invalidating his existence just by writing that ...

Here Flowers for your horrible experience x

RoyalCorgi · 29/12/2020 15:20

on the one hand there are columnists like Rod Liddle who I loathe,

The funny (or possibly sad) thing is that Liddle gets the whole gender debate - he is completely on the side of women. If arch-misogynist Liddle is more sympathetic to women's rights than the wokebros of the left, we really are in trouble.

RoyalCorgi · 29/12/2020 15:33

Here is Liddle on the phenomenon he describes as 'peak wank':

'The transgender stuff is the tipping point, because even within the minds of the liberals at the BBC and the Times it looks dodgy — largely on account of the fact that it challenges other previously strongly held intersectional shibboleths which these idiots have also swallowed whole. Many lesbians, for example, object to these medical interventions because they realise that they too might have been subjected to them at an early age — and that if this process continues lesbians might, like the carrier pigeon and Heinz Toast Toppers, become extinct.

'And the feminists have skin in the game too, having fought for equal rights for decades only to see men ineptly disguised as women taking their places on all-women short-lists and squatting alongside them, scratching their beards, in ladies’ toilets. But feminists also rightly aver that girls should not be forced to conform to stereotypical notions of what a girl should be — and they do not believe that those who don’t conform would be better off being men. It is an absurd and reductivist agenda.'
