Nowhere is safe from preferred pronouns

I've seen it all now, just logged into a zoom meeting of fairly senior colleagues to see one had as their zoom name [name] (she/her). It was all I could do to hide my eye-roll.

I mean, why on earth did they feel it necessary to put their pronouns there?? Notably, no one else had theirs in their zoom name, even though some do have it in their email signature. It's not like there was any ambiguity in their appearance either, they were visibly feminine presenting so it's unlikely anyone would be confused.

So is this the next step in compelled speech? Anyone been asked/told to do this yet?

Yikes my arse.

Read thewayoftheworld’s post.

Open wide. (Your eyes) and start seeing that those screaming for the big solution are actually the problem here.

“Yikes” is one of the stock phrases from the gendercult dictionary. It’s all looking a bit tired now, in light of the court judgement

Yes I was thinking it looks like a dated term. Doesn't seem to have moved with the times. Strange

Pronouns are a means of policing behaviour and regulating correct thinking. If you get it wrong that's a black mark. What if you get it wrong twice? What if you work in a big organisation and have no idea that the person with a beard who happened to be in a meeting is in fact she/her and you're not appropriately reverential? What if, because they have male entitlement they decide to go after you because you got it wrong? So many people fall under the trans umbrella nowadays I just don't buy that this is 'protecting' the most vulnerable employees. There will be plenty of people who see how enforcement of the new roles brings benefits to them and get off on the power play of enforced speech. You see it already, all the time, on social media.

It’s what people feel/think about themselves (and this can change). Silly to expect people to remember and know what people prefer (and have a holy fit if they don’t). What is the benefit exactly? It’s controlling.

@DetectiveRandySomething

No point trying to speak common sense in this echo chamber.
This is always so interesting

Complaining about an echo chamber and making minimal effort to change it

IRRITATING

not fucking interesting...its not interesting at all

I've only ever been asked about pronouns once - in an online context - and I think it was a legitimate request in this case.

It's obvious if you can see me that I'm female, but this was a group voice chat where, if you were to guess from my username, you'd probably think I was male (deliberately so). Since people needed to refer to each other they did need to know whether I wanted to be a she or he or they. Some people are "they" because they don't like how they are treated if people assume they are female and I can empathise with that. It's not an identity crisis, it's stealth mode.

@HecatesCatsInXmasHats

There was a University of Exeter study, which simply differentiated between the fake employees with the name Mark or Elizabeth and found:

^Managers who think gender bias no longer exists in the workplace are more likely to value male employees over women and give them higher wages, a study found.
Experts from Exeter University conducted an experiment where managers in a profession with a high proportion of women employees were asked to evaluate fake workers.^

Makes you wonder why any woman would want to or should be asked to seal the deal with pronouns.

Plus the accidental incident that caused headlines:

^
A man realised women are treated differently in the workplace after he accidentally signed off on emails using his female co-worker's signature^.

@Grooticle

I was asked to state my preferred pronouns and they nagged me about it when I tried to ignore them, so I decided to out-woke them.

So I replied (at some length) explaining that

  • if everybody starts stating their preferred pronouns, that puts pressure on people who may still be considering/exploring their gender identity to declare one way or the other before they feel ready to come out as their true authentic selves, so it’s best if some of us just decline to state them
  • that stating or requiring people to use preferred pronouns could be very triggering for people struggling with gender identity
  • that stating or requiring pronouns could be very confusing and stressful for people on the autistic spectrum or who are otherwise neuro-divergent

And that therefore I had decided to take a principled stand that I was not prepared to publicly state my preferred pronouns, or pressure anybody else to do so, but that for the avoidance of doubt I would certainly not be offended if people chose to refer to me using the pronouns which match my biological sex.

It’s all just such such bollocks, but if you work in an environment where you can’t say that I think being even more woke is the way to go :)

Also a great post. Deserves to be in a 'classics' section for easily resusable answers to common questions.

Liked your follow-on post, too, saying that it was so successful that the woke crew even started removing their own pronouns from emails surreptitiously. Grin

Agree, that's an excellent post Grooticle
