The Labour Party have tweeted as well. And have called it 'gender based violence'. Which is strange because I'm pretty sure that when, for example, Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head, it was nowt to do with how she 'identified' and everything to do with the fact that she is of the female sex and has a female body.

Still plenty of TRAs on the tweet making all about them again as usual as well.

All women

Oh fuck off.

midgebabe · 25/11/2020 13:49

Would womxxm not be better?

midgebabe · 25/11/2020 13:50

Daffodilto all those who have been affected my Male violence against women

Although you're absolutely right, I think this is one of those contexts where using the word 'sex' might confuse the issue if it's interpreted as referring to sexual violence rather than violence of all types by men on women.

MaudTheInvincible · 25/11/2020 14:03

Thanks for all victims and survivors of sex-based violence.

Violence against women and girls is frankly encouraged by a state which doesn't even include gynophobia in its anti-hate legislation, to all intents and purposes has decriminalised rape, and believes that consent can be bought in Leeds.

Beamur · 25/11/2020 14:10

Amnesty can piss right off.
They're not getting much love for their tweet either.
Isn't womxn an inherently racist term as - please correct me if I'm wrong - it was coined to include black women? Which is fundamentally unnecessary.

Duckwit · 25/11/2020 14:31

Yes that's true I guess. But then, it's the Labour Party so who knows!

GrandmaMazur · 25/11/2020 14:32

An article on the BBC website today about the increase in domestic abuse during the pandemic has spectacularly managed to avoid mentioning who the majority of the victims are.

stumbledin · 25/11/2020 14:35

I think (having skim read the comments so far) that this reflects how lazy the media is. In fact 25th November has been used by many women's organisations to stand up for the rights of women not to live a live in fear of male violence.

And it wouldn't take them hard to report on the work of these women's groups instead of empty gestures by big organisations.

More worrying is that more women aren't aware of not just the 25th November that that it is the start of 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women. (And yes some people did start talking about gender without realising it was part of the trans agenda).

There are loads of links if you care to google, but as I have these to hand:

16 Days of Action for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – 25 November to 10 December
womensgrid 16 November 2020 16 Days of Action for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – 25 November to 10 December2020-11-16T17:38:45+00:00 16 Days, Global, Violence Against Women, Virtual

25 Nov International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
01 Dec World AIDS Day
06 Dec Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre
10 Dec International Human Rights Day

Also has a calendar of events (mostly online this year)
www.womensgrid.org.uk/?p=13551

Although White Ribbon Day was meant to be specifically about men showing that they were taking a stand against male violence - hence the White Ribbon Campaign which was briefly trendy with football clubs but I think has fallen off the posture agenda. www.whiteribbon.org.uk/

Amnxsty getting a pasting - rightly - on Twxttxr for their shenanigans. This is a passing phase that will feature in a chapter or two in history books in a decade or two. People will find it hard to believe that it isn't an urban myth.

Please.

stumbledin · 25/11/2020 16:37

Sigh!

There has really got to be some sort of wholesale re-education about this sloppy use of the word gender.

Most who are using it are probably unaware, but by having it constantly misused daily actually makes talking about sex based rights even more of an uphill struggle than it already is.

We need a feed up emoji

Duckwit · 25/11/2020 16:47

I had a look Angela Rayner's twitter thinking that IDEVAW probably wasn't worth an entire video, but that there might be a token tweet or even retweet to raise awareness of what happens to women.

Nothing....

Still at least might have got her pat on the head from the men the other day, good girl Angela.

Nothing either from 'passionate feminist' Owen Jones. I guess when it's so important to remember all zero trans people who were murdered last year, who gives a fuck about women eh?

The Counting Dead Women twitter feed is so powerful today, its quite overwhelming to read really Sad

ArabellaScott · 25/11/2020 16:52

My local police force have put up a facebook post about it. Depressingly, a large proportion of the comments are 'what about the men' and complaints that they're ignoring and belittling male victims of domestic violence, statements that it's not a gendered issue, etc. A few women are arguing, but it's fucking miserable that we can't even ask for women to stop being killed without people jumping in with this sht, every time.

ArabellaScott · 25/11/2020 16:54
  • and Amnesty can fxck right off forever.
SophocIestheFox · 25/11/2020 17:00

Flowers to all those thinking today about the devastating impact that violence against women has had on their lives.

Tanith · 25/11/2020 18:35

I've just seen PMQ.
Keir Starmer started by drawing attention to the Day and mentioning the appalling statistics of domestic violence against women.
It's usual for the reply from his opponent to acknowledge what was said and to add their own comment in agreement, but Boris Johnson failed to do so.

Doyoumind · 25/11/2020 18:54

So, The Independent has taken the opportunity today to print fake news suggesting it isn't actually females who face the threat of violence and murder. We aren't at as great a risk as TW apparently. Who knew? We must all have misinterpreted the stats.

itsadress · 25/11/2020 19:06

Clearly a very unfashionable cause. Bloody joke!

Iamanaubergine · 25/11/2020 19:09

God that independent article has really enraged me Angry and Olivia Coleman! So disappointed. Why does every single women’s event have to centre transwomen??

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/11/2020 19:16

I thought I was logged in there... Was going to steal that twitter comment

Yesterday we remembered all zero transwomen murdered in the UK in the last 12 months. Today we remember the 341? women murdered in the on the last 12 months.

littlbrowndog · 25/11/2020 19:25

The ways women are killed 😥😥😥

International day for the elimination of violence against women
ArabellaScott · 25/11/2020 19:29

'overkilling' is an actual term. That's ... upsetting.

Re Jameela Jamil's letter:

'"Trans women are more likely to be murdered, more likely to be victims of violent attacks in their own homes, and more likely to be homeless, again increasing the risk of violence, than their cis sisters. '

  • This isn't true at all, is it? Or are they specifically talking about Brazil or something?
stumbledin · 25/11/2020 19:31

I was just coming back to add another comment and have seen the Independent link.

Am now too depressed to post.

Makes me want to cry.

Although some of the comments are good.

This is exhausting.

ChattyLion · 25/11/2020 19:32

I had a post on this on the MN thread which was deleted, linked to that open letter above Hmm ... so once again just to commend the Council of Europe on their 16 days of activism at this worrying time of increased violence against women and girls.

www.coe.int/en/web/istanbul-convention/international-day-for-the-elemination-of-vaw

‘The Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, also known as the Istanbul Convention, is ratified by 34 member states. [including the UK]
It offers the most comprehensive legal framework to prevent and combat violence against women and domestic violence and contains a wide range of measures for governments to take, and to involve NGOs, women’s organisations and civil society generally.’

Useful infographics here about what the UK’s obligations are under this:

And here: (and noting that this includes obligation to: ‘Encourage the media and the private sector In setting standards that enhance respectful gender roles and challenge attitudes that excuse violence against women’)
