It's a naked woman..

Currently reading A Vindication of the Rights of Woman for an OU course, and - unless the tone changes dramatically in the second half of it - I'm not seeing how an idealised nude is the right statue to convey anything about her?

@LioneIRichTea

*a doll-sized statue of Charles Dickens with washboard abs and his todger out.

I like this idea. Lots of nude male figures - Adam Smith in a mankini. David Hume in a cheeky turban and nothing else. Churchill with his famous cigar out.*

Meanwhile Turkmenistan’s president Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has just unveiled a giant statue of his favorite dog.

It makes as much sense.

I prefer the dog statue...

I think I do too.

Maybe ‘for Mary’ needs some puppy ears and a tail?

[quote Gingernaut]Now it's a trans rights issue.

Oh. An American transwoman knows all/sees all. Of course.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 12/11/2020 15:51

Why is that horse sniggering? Why is Caligula naked? 😳

Duckwit · 12/11/2020 15:54

I don't get what point Shon is trying to make. I'm assuming Shon thinks that picture makes British feminism look bad but I don't see how?

I assumed that Shon is criticising the 'covering up' of the statue, because that is 'slut shaming' and 'SWERFY' and the 'adult human female' bit because any feminist who dares to think that men are not women is, of course, awful.

Apparently, at the moment, British feminism is full of TERFS and SWERFS. Whereas what we should be doing is looking to other countries where women legally being sold to men as literal commodities, and men being allowed in female prisons and other safe spaces because that those counties are absolute utopia.

Remember when Margaret Thatcher put a napkin over a little BA airplane model with the new livery because she thought it was crap? Same here - no prudishness just taste. And it looks like a young man...

littlebrowndog this one is great.

My annoyance comes from the poster’s comment “let them be remembered for what they did” and it’s the “let them” that bothers me because the implication is clear: someone needs to give permission for women to be remembered for what they did, who they were, as though we remember them first for being women and then for their accomplishments.

I don’t fault the poster. This language of “let women do this” and “let women do that” is insidious. Deeply ingrained, especially when speaking of any minority group (which we are not, but we are treated as).

I do realise this is my particular bugbear, and thank you for highlighting this piece honouring this person’s achievements.

The tiny size of the statue makes me wonder whether this was some kind of Spinal Tap-style cockup, where she was given the measurements in inches rather than feet.

Someone will just day she was the given the correct unit of measurement but that women can’t do maths*.

Sorry. Feeling a bit bitter about this. What a wasted opportunity honour someone extraordinary with a commemorative statue.

DidoLamenting · 12/11/2020 16:29

It really is hideous. Even if one accepts MH's weak arguments about Everywoman restrictive clothes, it's still awful.

The melting candle stuff just looks as if something went wrong in the smelting.

The proportions of the 2 parts are ridiculous.

The female figure is grumpy and a bit sour- faced.

And, although this is really trivial, it really isn't the body I want. It's too toned and athletic looking for me.

ArabellaScott · 12/11/2020 16:37

Ahhh, now that dailydot article is interesting. More pushback against 'women's anger'. More equating feminists with white supremacy - how utterly absurd.

'white women’s anger is, has been, and continues to be a source of terror for a lot of marginalized people'.

It's all our fault, wims. What are they going to pin on us next?

HazeyJaneII · 12/11/2020 16:37

It is still massively grinding my gears...the utterly inappropriate nature of the image, the guff being spouted in order to defend it, the lack of understanding of public art/monument that it demonstrates and the fact that it is a really piss poor piece of sculpture.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 12/11/2020 16:44

I’m worried ‘she’ is going to catch her death...

I am not clicking anything by the Daily Dot, but I assume it's Valens again.

Valens was all over twitter talking about h* "breeding kink" and h* fantasies of "spit-roasting" women with other transwomen, and the tweet explicitly mentioned "gender critical" women in the context of this.
