www.theguardian.com/books/2020/nov/10/mary-wollstonecraft-finally-honoured-with-statue-after-200-years

It's a naked woman..

Currently reading A Vindication of the Rights of Woman for an OU course, and - unless the tone changes dramatically in the second half of it - I'm not seeing how an idealised nude is the right statue to convey anything about her?

@MichelleofzeResistance

Thanks Where that makes more sense.... yes, a nice statue of Matilda, but not sure she'd be less infantilised if she was presented naked. How does the clothes being infantilising part fit together?
I don't think it does. I think that those were supposed to be two separate thoughts. Pretty silly either way.

I don't know if this is paywalled or not. It was the first time I clicked on it, but wasn't the second time I tried but is now.

It ends with a scolding- those who don't like the statue are basically too dim to understand the iconoclasm in Maggi Hambling's work.

DidoLamenting · 15/11/2020 15:38

Being fearless doesn't require creating fear in others

Wouldn't it in fact have quite the opposite effect? Giving encouragement to the fearful?

JamieLeeCurtains · 15/11/2020 15:57

Centering Michael Jackon and allegations of "messing around with children", along with her perception of him, is a pretty unusual move

@Butterer, I looked at that clip you posted a short while ago.

Jesus, Maggi Hambling actually does say that the allegations against Michael Jackson were of 'messing around with children'. Her own words. As though the abused children were what, dolls? Toys? Non-sentient passive forms?

@Butterer

Exactly. I know it's 10+ years old so changing attitudes since then etc, but I think it's offensive and inappropriate even for then. I'd completely forgotten about that whole bit of the film.
I first became involved in child protection and safeguarding in 2003, and Maggi Hambling's words would definitely have been seen as very problematic even back then.

Who and what MH 'centres' and how she achieves this - from her beliefs through to physical manifestation - is really very tedious and hackneyed. It's about as iconoclastic as Jim Davidson.

It's very beautiful.

That committee want a good shake, they were absolute idiots to go with this sculpture. I hope they are ashamed of themselves wasting so much money.

Typesofcatalogue · 17/11/2020 01:11

The passionate argument that we need to say queer instead of gay (with ref to Derek Jarman) is so dated because the context is purely in terms of sexuality

I really like Maggi Hambling, always been fascinated by her. I loved the recent BBC documentary particularly hearing her talk about her artistic processes and life in such detail.

Yet for all her once avant garde gender non conformity and strange ways, I can’t help feel she is a little old fashioned and outdated. Some of her views and language seem anachronistic. Whilst she still has a gift for doing portraits that capture the essence of a person’s character and convey intense emotion and turmoil, that awful ‘statue‘ and some of her recent work struggles to be relevant, imo.

As a tribute to Wollstonecraft it spectacularly misses the point and is cringingly badly executed to say the least.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 18/11/2020 16:58

Anyone know what she’s wearing today? It’s rather windy and chilly out and I’m worried Silver Barbie will catch her death.
