It's a naked woman..

Currently reading A Vindication of the Rights of Woman for an OU course, and - unless the tone changes dramatically in the second half of it - I'm not seeing how an idealised nude is the right statue to convey anything about her?

@TinselAngel

She looks lovely and cosy.
She does indeed- although the indeterminate molten lump she's standing on looks even worse.
Greencoatblue · 21/11/2020 02:11

So fucking fed up this is even necessary, but kudos and thanks to whoever did this!

Cwenthryth · 21/11/2020 05:53

Looks great! Sterling work witches.

The crowdfunding for the other statue stands at just over £4K, out of £154K needed. That’s with 182 supporters so an average £22 donation. Only has until 7th Jan to make the target. I’ve bought a lottery ticket today though, so if I win squillions I’ll sort the rest. Other than that anyone know any very rich people?

IloveJKRowling · 21/11/2020 06:21

I think that lovely knitted item has vastly improved the statue.

Winesalot · 21/11/2020 09:17

Glad to see Silver tits warm and cared for.

The workmanship on that knitted cloak looked good by the way. What a lovely decoration. I hope it gets to stay...

ErrolTheDragon · 21/11/2020 09:35

It's great - it avoids the alleged problem of defining her as belonging to any period or class, except as a feminist by the use of the suffragette colours. (They would be anachronistic but as we're not limiting her to ca 1800 that's fortunately irrelevant)

The suffragette teacosy poncho is the perfect winter garb for 'everywoman'.Grin

ChattyLion · 21/11/2020 10:39

This is fabulous. Witches rise!

I also like to imagine Knitterwoman as a feminist superhero swooping about with her woolly cloak doing stylish and witty acts of feminist consciousness-raising. In league with her stationery-toting, secret-pocketed invisible superhero sister Stickerwoman, whose superpower is being active all over the world at the same time. Glitterball

Yes, it's a bit disappointing. I actually wish it hadn't been conflated with the trans-discussion through the AHF t-shirts, which might make some people unwilling to share. I too would cover the whole thing if I had millions to spare: what a good way to spend money!

Mary needs a benefactress.

I cant remember if I ever posted a link here to a parallel discussion about where a more fitting statue of Mary Wollstonecraft should go.

In my intro the link to the tweet tells you more about the campaign to get this to happen.

I read an article today and became aware for the first time of the “valiant five” group of statues in Ottawa which commemorate the amazing women who asked the simple question “ does the word persons include women”. This very simple question caused a lot of head scratching, but it was eventually agreed that subject to divine objection in the form of flood and pestilence , yes women are persons. This led directly to female suffrage in Canada.

It’s a fabulous group , showing exactly how strong, determined women should be celebrated.

I love Maggi Hamblings work, never understood the antipathy towards the shells on the beach, but I think the Woollstencraft statue is a weak and insignificant piece. A woman whose legacy is of global importance should be given a monument that reflects this. It didnt have to be figurative like the Ottawa memorial, but it did need to be powerful.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/11/2020 17:29

Wow, that's interesting. Sobering to realise that women have been legally recognised as 'persons' only since 1929 in Canada.

Love the yarn bombed MW. It’s a great improvement.

I love it that yarnbomb, I absolutely love it!

Thanks for posting this.

Does anyone know if there is a new crowdfunder for the new statue going? As far as I know, they're doing it in increments now.

Update on statue crowdfunder!

The male sculptor says

Martin Jennings says: "I was very pleased that there was such enthusiasm for me to develop my original idea for a statue to Mary Wollstonecraft. Despite this I was increasingly certain that the mother of the feminist movement would better be represented by a female artist. Having originally asked the sculptor Emma Lavender to rough the work out for me, I decided to invite her to take over the whole commission. I'm delighted to say that Emma will now carry the work forward as the sole artist.

And Emma Lavender has written a detailed explanation on her vision for the statue. I think she is definitely the right woman for the job. It's well worth reading. The amount of care and thought she's putting into this statue is phenomenal.

I can't link to it directly without falling foul of the auto-hide.

So try twitter.com/lascapigliata8/status/1560704167961939968?t=p4eVA_T1LQfcx68TKN7Qbg&s=19
