What do men think of mixed-sex toilets?

The mixed-sexed toilet debate is usually centred around the fact that women don't want to share safe spaces with men. However, I wonder why the opinions of men aren't include more in the debate?

I was talking to my partner about this issue last night. He works in a university, and in his department's building, most toilets are now mixed-sex (self contained toilets, similar to disabled toilets, not cubicles). Despite offering lots of privacy, he doesn't like these toilets as he says it's awkward standing in line for the toilet alongside young women. He feels like he's doing something wrong. He then added that if it was an open-plan toilet with cubicles, he doesn't think he could even go in without feeling awkward.

Thinking about it, most men I know would probably feel the same way. I was wondering if anyone here had any thoughts on this point?

My dp and brother hate them. It makes them feel really uncomfortable. It goes both ways really doesn't it and the movement to switch to gender neutral is only there to please a minority at the expense of the majority.

Usernamenotavailabl · 08/11/2020 13:11

I think you would all be surprised how many women just wandering into the gents, past the urinals (sometimes stopping for a look and a comment about lenks soze) before heading to a cubicle anyway.

Granted at busy events likes gigs, stand up comedy, nightclubs and usually when drunk and a line for the ladies but it happens - a lot, and most men don't bat an eyelid.

Yes, but those women are choosing to share a bathroom with men in those instances. It isn't being forced upon them.

Pyewhacket · 08/11/2020 15:41

I don't think men give a monkeys. It's a kharzi, not an instrument of female suppression.

Well clearly some men do give a monkeys.

Yeah - just watch the evacuation of a men’s loo when a dad pops in with a little girl. It looks like an alligator just walked in 🏃‍♂️ 🏃‍♂️ 🏃‍♂️ 🐊

And? The question was do men mind, not do women.

In my experience men couldn't care less.

@Usernamenotavailabl

But surely this thread highlights that many men do care?

A cursory scroll through the thread demonstrates that

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 08/11/2020 17:42

I don’t know any men who either don’t care or prefer it. Most really don’t like it and feel uneasy and really really fate the idea of being there with a lone woman or with little girls.

Usernamenotavailabl · 08/11/2020 19:14

Well, my other male family members, my friends and my work colleagues don’t care.

Maybe it’s a background or generational thing? I honestly don’t know any men who would have an issue with it

Typesofcatalogue · 08/11/2020 19:19

he says it's awkward standing in line for the toilet alongside young women.

Do you think he might need to grow up a bit? I mean he does realise women are just people right? Even young ones?

He’s not actually in a toilet with the opposite sex. It’s just a queue. Fully clothed. Not in a toilet. Just a queue. For goodness sake.

This.

I seriously can’t get my head around that sort of thinking.

Do these men who find it “awkward” avoid women at the swimming pool, beach, gym? Do they find it “awkward” to take their own daughters to gym or dancing or swimming where there are lots of other girls? Sounds odd to me to be honest

@TheElementsOfMedical

We have recently-refurbished mixed-sex fully enclosed toilets with integrated hand wash basin and dryer, on the reception/public/social (canteen) level of our workplace. They're kept reasonably clean, perhaps because they're the ones seen by visitors and outsiders, so none of the commonly-stated complaints like pee on the floor, etc.

Having said that, most of the actual staff, even if they have come to that floor for coffee break or a meeting, seem to prefer to go back to their own floors where there are still single-sex toilets (this includes me!) - the people I see using the mixed-sex loos are generally not the staff who work in the building.

If I worked in your building I would use the mixed-sex set up. I really don't understand how anyone can prefer the horrible cubicles with thin walls and gaps single sex set up compared to how you have described the mixed-sex arrangements.

Hardly a ‘generational thing’ - I am thinking of men i know from 16 to mid 60s.

Genuine question. Are they largely privately educated?

It really doesn’t match with anyone I know

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 08/11/2020 19:51

Nope much of a mix of types, cultures, races, class, etc.

Then I don’t get it at all. Really can’t see an issue or why any man would have a problem with it.

Lots of large outdoor events have men’s urinals that are basically in the open air. Big hexagonal things where the men al directly face each other to pee, or into a trench or against a wall. Total non issue

Eowynthewarrior · 08/11/2020 20:05

Every man I know from 24 to 88 hates mixed sex loos. Combination of feeling embarrassed, feeling impinging on women’s dignity, their own dignity and longer queues. And I expect that the chap who felt awkward queing with women for individual cubicles might be because a lot of the loos are down poorly lit corridors away from more public errors and perhaps he feels that women around him find that sort of set up intimidating. Talking about the safety aspect of individual mixed sex loos especially in nightclubs and pubs if someone heard someone having sex in one of the cubicles who would intervene and call security? A lot of people would assume it was a consensual couple .. and wouldn’t think that it might be a rapist who had pushed a woman into the cubicle.

That’s hilarious.

How does the fact that it’s a mixed sex loo make any difference?

I have heard loads of people having sex in men’s toilets in clubs. Why would I call security?

Kit19 · 08/11/2020 20:17

Has some kind of bat signal gone out??

DH & DF have both said they would hate it

ThinEndOfTheWedge · 08/11/2020 20:25

That’s hilarious

Which bit do you find so funny?

When I used to go to local nightclubs, there used to be lots of young women totally pissed sitting in the ladies - I can well imagine a passing bloke - now allowed into the same toilets - taking full advantage - and no one else around having a clue it was rape.

Single sex / the bloke isn’t allowed in. Women are much safer.

In fact it was my first thought when I heard about mixed sex toilets at university student unions.

Hilarious is not the word I would use.

Caroncanta · 08/11/2020 20:25

Has some kind of bat signal gone out??

Yep, I reckon so. Plenty of people her ready to try and play it down, move on right, there's nothing to see here....

What on earth has that got to do with anything?

Um, what do the very specific circumstances applying here have to do with the far more standard, everyday situations of shops, offices, restaurants?

Usernamenotavailabl I'm one of the few posters who actually prefer fully enclosed "rooms" which are mixed sense but I find your posts bizarre and illogical.

Because I find it bizarre that men find it awkward, and genuinely wondered if these men are from backgrounds where they mixed only with other males through their education. Simply because I genuinely don’t know anyone who would have an issue with it so am trying to understand why some men would
