URGENT ACTION TONIGHT: SEX BASED RIGHTS

MForstater · 19/10/2020 20:36

Fawcett Society and Stella Creasy (I know, I know) have a ten minute rule bill tomorrow on equal pay.

It is about sex based rights but they are not shouting about that

You can edit the letter to make that point clearer ... It's sex not gender!

My version

docs.google.com/document/d/10l7cD-BHjlths6OySRy-nq8NlsWeBF3a637dNAP_Fc8/edit?usp=drivesdk

Would you do this tonight and share on social media etc ...

I just don't understand why you feel this determines what kind of person a human being should be and how they should live their lives.
Aw, well you’ll be relieved to hear then that no feminist thinks sex determined these things. Yay, you were labouring under a false impression! Phew for that. Now either go email your MP to support the equal pay bill or bugger off derailing our call to arms.

@MiladyRenata

OK, well quoting myself is weird, but:

"Well the reproductive role in itself is biology."

I thought that was reasonably clear. I just don't understand why you feel this determines what kind of person a human being should be and how they should live their lives.

It is how we get to your last sentence where we differ. I argue that a man can dress as he wishes and can be as sensitive as he wishes and can choose to be a SAHD and so on, and that a woman can also dress as she wishes and can be as assertive and ambitious as she wishes and so on, but I don't see why this loosening of gender norms and roles must be linked to the erasure of the groups men and women.

Female people are, indeed, treated terribly in many places on this earth because they possess female biology, and there must be a way for us to continue fighting against sex-based oppression. For that we need a name for the group which suffers from that kind of oppression.

Winesalot · 19/10/2020 21:39

Well the reproductive role in itself is biology. But pretty much everything else about being a man and being a woman is a social construct. Why must we be a certain way (tough and stoical, or kind and gentle) because of our biology?

You are clearly muddling up stereotypes and science here now.

Maybe you should read the proven scientific facts. That way, you would know regardless how someone identifies, the biology bit sorts itself.

MrsGface · 19/10/2020 21:40

Excellent. Saw Maya’s tweet. Sent email to my MP complete with paragraph on how my status as a mother rather than a father has seen my salary stagnate since pregnancy. Saw thread here. Bumping to get more support.

HecatesCats · 19/10/2020 21:41

@AldiIsla

It is done. Just the template and not much more but I'm having a few drinks and didn't want to cock it up.

I'm having my monthly socially constructed bleed out my vagina and I'm on the wine.

Grin same, same!
OldCrone · 19/10/2020 21:42

Why must we be a certain way (tough and stoical, or kind and gentle) because of our biology?

Both men and women can be tough and stoical. Both men and women can be kind and gentle.

What's your point?

This is a parenting site, are you aware of this? It's all about how the reproductive role affects us and our lives as parents.

You are having difficulty understanding a lot of things.

acatcalledjohn · 19/10/2020 21:43

@MiladyRenata

With respect, it's not a derail. It's entirely relevant. Either you want to treat people differently based on their chromosomes (the definition of "sex" mooted by some posters here), or you want to judge people on their behaviours and values.

Gender and sex are the same thing and both social constructs. We are all human beings.

We are being treated differently based on our chromosomes. That's what we are trying to equalise. We are being underpaid because we may have babies. We are being underpaid because we are seen as hormonal and hysterical.

We are being harassed because we happen to have boobs.

We are not being treated equally because of our chromosomes, regardless of how the fuck we identify.

Get back to your chromosomal caste system: that's our reality. Trans women and non bjnary male bodied people are above natal woman.

FFS.

Don’t feed the troll!

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 19/10/2020 21:47

thanks Maya, email sent

and thanks Milday, truly you are the gift that keeps on giving

[chromosomes]...the definition of "sex" mooted by some posters here

Grin

amazing

Princessdebthe1st · 19/10/2020 21:48

I have emailed my MP. She is quite responsive so hopefully she will consider it.

Winesalot · 19/10/2020 21:49

Good that you are on the right threads for that then... Maya's letter is an excellent start.

I think that readers of these threads have probably picked up the lack of understanding of just what being a female entails and how very different your perception seems to be from the reality of female's lives. Please do keep asking questions though, we are very happy to keep this thread bumped and to provide more sunlight for those reading.

Highwind · 19/10/2020 21:49

Because my sex is apparently a social construct it must mean that biology... and hence my periods are a social construct too!

.... Going to phone the GP in the morning if I am still bleeding from my vagina then though. I just identified out of this apparently mutable biological sex thing so bleeding out of any orifice is probably an urgent matter that will need attention.

Also might as well cancel my smear too, it’s a hassle I would rather deal without, so I don’t identify with having a cervix.

So many issues sorted! No risk of pregnancy! No risk of cervical/Ovarian cancer!

Crazy how much easier my life is going to be now by simply recognising that sex is a social construct and that I have been conditioned to experience these bodily functions by growing up liking pink.

......

acatcalledjohn · 19/10/2020 21:50

Do feed the troll. People may actually see the nonsense that is gender identity.

A lot of the papers have published an interview with Sam Smith on his non binary identity. The comments on the FB shares by said newspapers are becoming more GC by the day and it is great to see.

DeaconBoo · 19/10/2020 21:51

"politeness" is a social construct, tbf...

Thanks for flagging this up.

Now for some light relief as for some strange reason I have been reminded of this classic song

Loving the mocking of trans and nb people in this thread ShockHmm

Email sent to my MP 👍

OhHolyJesus · 19/10/2020 21:56

Sent email to my MP complete with paragraph on how my status as a mother rather than a father has seen my salary stagnate since pregnancy.

Oh arse that's an excellent point I failed to make as I sent it in a rush. I could have mentioned working part time as well...FFS

acatcalledjohn · 19/10/2020 21:58

Calling a spade a spade is not mocking.

Stop wanting to be more special than others. You are not.

RozWatching · 19/10/2020 22:01

Thank you Maya, on it. Will edit the letter as you suggested.

Why is Stella Creasy involved? I thought she was firmly in the same camp as ImaladyRenata

HecatesCats · 19/10/2020 22:02

I just don't understand why you feel this determines what kind of person a human being should be and how they should live their lives.

Well I'll tell you what, it made a huge difference to my pay after I returned to work after having children. This has had a huge impact on my life, my self esteem and my relationships. I earn substantially less than I did beforehand and I know that this happened to me because of the chromosomes I possess.

You've read through 70 posts of women explaining why sex based rights matter, how we cannot identify our way out of sex based discrimination, how gender is a social construct whilst sex is a biological fact and how conflating the two is to the detriment of women and women's rights...

...and that is what you've taken from it.
