This is excellent news. For those of you unaware, the Scottish Government legislated that there had to be equal number of men and women on boards. Of course, they defined women as including men, so For Women Scotland applied for, and have been granted, a judicial review. Piece about it here www.scottishlegal.com/article/blog-shifting-sands-on-the-definition-of-woman-in-scots-law

Spades out!

Excellent news.
This will get my monthly donation budget for the next few months.

stumbledin · 16/10/2020 14:25

Thanks for the link.

As a background explanation great, but ... I cant see mention of a judicial review.

Could just be me lacking concentration Blush

Which paragraph is it in?

Thanks

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/10/2020 14:27

Sorry. Link is just background info. FWS announced the judicial review today.

Fantastic news.

I’m finding the clutch of recent judicial reviews quite heartening. The overreach of lobbying groups and their captured public sector bodies has been outrageous. I’m in huge admiration of every women’s group or individual who has rolled up their sleeves and challenged this. These organisations have woefully underestimated women’s determination when we have decided we’re not letting it slide.

ChattyLion · 16/10/2020 15:03

I agree Betty It’s great. This is how we shore things up for ourselves and for our daughters. Legal change and legal protections.

MerchedCymru · 16/10/2020 15:07

Fabulous news. Well done For Women Scot - and thanks from us in Wales. We're learning a lot from you - particularly about persistence and a terrier-like determination to fight for the rights of adult human females, and the pre-adult variants too. Proud to know you!

We'll be contributing to the crowd-funder and will amplify your vitally important voices. Flowers

persistentwoman · 16/10/2020 15:08

That's great. Although I'm still cautious. When you look at the "bench book' that was written I believe by some very self interested parties, the regulatory capture of the judiciary is a concern. Hopefully honest ethical judges make balanced judgements on the basis of the law, not ideology.
But there was Maya's employment tribunal judge.......

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/10/2020 15:12

Even if they lose it is still more sunlight. Hopefully this'll make the press fairly quickly - they delight in writing long stories about the SNP government's inept attempts at lawmaking.

I just wish there wasn’t such a delay on these things getting to court.

Brilliant!!!

This is fantastic news.. something to look forward to after New Year's Day. Smile

Will do some digging.

BetsyM00 · 16/10/2020 15:44

And the timing is perfect. Scottish elections next May, so as much as the SNP do not want to talk about it, this has just become an election issue.

Donated and shared. Also, the hate crime bill will be going through parliament between now and the election too, won't it?

Oh hai Ms Sturgeon. Hope you are getting ready to defend all these policies in every interview you do as part of your campaign.

ArabellaScott · 16/10/2020 16:38

This is magic. Thank you, FWS. I have dug.

Coincidentally, I just got a facebook anti hate-crime ad on my Facebook. The reactions were interesting. Not 100% critical of hate crime, there was definitely plenty of support for the 'dear transphobes' message, but I would say, were I someone with an eye on the publi mood, that this quite evidently can no longer be seen as a simple, pastel-coloured easy method of virtue signalling. Smile

People are more and more aware of the issues, and less and less afraid to speak up. Mostly, I'm afraid, it's men speaking up on behalf of women, but when you look at the history of who has lost jobs/been attacked and threatened, it's quite starkly clear why that is.

This is a divisive and increasingly unpopular topic. The public is not buying it, Scotgov.

Might be an idea to watch all the LibDem/Labour disasters on the subject to see what not to do.

I know what Sturgeon will do, though. She'll say 'look' with a wee exasperated sigh, and then explain how we all just need educading.

Shedbuilder · 16/10/2020 16:40

This is great news. Will get my credit card out tomorrow and contribute to this and all the other crowdfunders I've ignored over the last month.

Hooray for For Women Scot. @MerchedCymru, are you the Wales equivalent of FWS?

Totally! I might email her to suggest she calls Jo Swinson, Rebecca Long Bailey and Lisa Nandy for some tips. Really worked out for them. Grin
