This is excellent news. For those of you unaware, the Scottish Government legislated that there had to be equal number of men and women on boards. Of course, they defined women as including men, so For Women Scotland applied for, and have been granted, a judicial review. Piece about it here www.scottishlegal.com/article/blog-shifting-sands-on-the-definition-of-woman-in-scots-law

Spades out!

Worried that it is an awfully big hole to fill.
Last comment on the National article also very worrying, implying that if independence won they could just get rid of the Equality Act.

howonearthdidwegethere · 16/10/2020 17:47

It's going to be very hard for politicians not to be quizzed on the issue of self-ID/women's rights during the election campaign. I imagine the women's groups will be making sure of that. It's what happened during the general election last year.

Candidates or parties with a crap line on this issue was going to be thoroughly exposed. Good!

And then we can choose who to vote for with that information to hand. I, for one, cannot wait...

P.S. Wake up, people: Nicola Sturgeon ain't no feminist.

Good news they have raised 10% of the amount on the first day and glinner is 50% funded already

MerchedCymru · 16/10/2020 19:20

Hi Shed. Yes we are. Used to be Lleisiau Merched Cymru - a collective of women across Wales - but we have realised we need to be more formally organised given the amount of anti-women policy-capture in Wales. We're on it now! And LGB Alliance have a Cymru branch...

Presumably if they got independence then all UK laws cease to apply. They would have to have some sort of law to adopt uk laws that currently apply until they can decide which ones to keep.

But getting rid of the Equality Act? So no reasonable adjustments for disabilities? Able to exclude certain races from jobs or housing? Ban religions? Sack women who get pregnant? I am sure I read about another nationalistic regime that did that sort of thing....

No, that's not how it works. Scotland already has a separate legal system and laws. What is currently Scottish law would continue to be so until changed.

334bu · 17/10/2020 07:24

So all UK laws like the Equality law incorporated into Scots Law would remain?

Aesopfable · 17/10/2020 07:40

No this is wrong. The majority of laws that are in place in Scotland are uK laws put in place by the UK Parliament - including for example the Equality Act 2010, the Coronavirus Act 2020 or the Education (Scotland) Act 1980. If Scotland became independent then the UK parliament laws (Including the Equality Act 2010) cease to apply in Scotland. This was the same with Europe - the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2020 meant all EU legislation continued to apply under domestic law unless amended or revoked. Something similar would have to be put in place in Scotland (which would also have to include EU law adopted by the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2020 which is UK legislation).

Very worrying. Makes this judicial review seem even more important.

Really good article.

Feminism has been at odds with conservatism for so long and yet it never occurred to the right to simply redefine women out of their rights. It took the left to come up with that.

Sad, but true.

FindTheTruth · 17/10/2020 08:48

Did Caroline McAllister not pass vetting because Teddy Hope SNP transgender officer, claimed in June to have been the target of abuse at a public meeting and online? did they provide proof?

Dances · 17/10/2020 09:09

OMG, the SNP are getting worse by the day.

ArabellaScott · 17/10/2020 09:37

Excellent Spectator article.

This whole issue has revealed some very deep nastiness within the SNP.

dementedma · 17/10/2020 09:48

Good news. Will continue to support.
