Joe Biden issues new statement on the transgender debate

In a Q&A he said he'll reverse all 'anti trans' executive orders if he becomes president. He revealed again that he doesn't really know anything about the trans debate but implied he will still give campaigners everything they want twitter.com/DailyCaller/status/1316913590620852224?s=20

So goodbye abortion, Affordable Care Act, and hello Gilead

If Roe v Wade was struck down, abortion would not disappear. It would be legislated by States. So predictably Conservative states would limit it and nothing would change for Progressive states.

Or ... Congress could actually legislate a federal law (like they should have in the first place) instead of having relied on unelected judges to make and hold this decision for all these years.

As for the ACA, I would love to see it struck down ...

HelloToMyKitty · 16/10/2020 09:19

The Democrat party had some excellent candidates at the early stage of their selection process

And it’s overlooked that Biden was voted in fairly by the Democratic base. That’s who many wanted.

I was personally holding out for Mayor Pete, Tulsi Gabbard or Andrew Yang

And it’s overlooked that Biden was voted in fairly by the Democratic base. That’s who many wanted.

There are many people who would vote for Trump. On the other side there are many people who would vote for someone who isn't Trump. I suspect that the number of people who would vote for Biden as Biden is rather low.

It's amazing to me that in a country the size of America, the two 'best' candidates they could rustle up are Trump and Biden!
Why didn't the Democrats learn, after the Hillary Clinton fiasco, that they have to offer something better?

Agree and you can say exactly the same for UK, well I should say England. Johnson V Corbyn??? And Corbyn was there for 3 elections! At least we’ve got rid of him now.

nauticant · 16/10/2020 09:30

From elsewhere:

If this rapid pace continues through the year, 2020 will set a record for violence against the transgender community. At least 27 trans and gender-nonconforming folks were killed in all of 2019, according to the Human Rights Campaign.

If the total ends up double last year's that would be about 50.

The number of women killed per year in the US is about 2.5 per 100,000. (That's not an easy figure to track down.)

The US population is 330,000,000 of whom it's said 0.6% are trans so that would be about 2 million trans people in the US.

Therefore if 50 trans people were to be killed this year, the per 100,000 figure for trans people would be 2.5. That corresponds with the rate for women.

The problem for trans people in the US is that those killed are disproportionality in marginalised communites, for example people of colour or sex workers.

"Epidemiological studies based on United States data suggest that the likelihood of active female sex workers being victimized in a homicide is almost 18 times higher than that of women of similar age and race who do not engage in sex work." - Brewer, D. D. et al., “Extent, trends, and perpetrators of prostitution-related homicide in the United States”, Journal of Forensic Sciences, vol. 51, No. 5 (September 2006), pp. 1101–1108.

That's for female prostitutes. I'd imagine for transwomen prostitutes the rate would be even higher.

Auto · 16/10/2020 09:33

If I had to pick one of those two to vote for I would (just) prefer Trump.

HelloToMyKitty · 16/10/2020 09:33

I guess my point is that Biden won the primary over really excellent candidates like Tulsi Gabbard and Andrew Yang.

That’s on the Democratic voters in the primary. There were maybe a dozen other candidates to choose from.

And that’s who they chose. This is on them. Don’t forget they did once chose Obama over Hillary in 2008 so they don’t always get it wrong.

(You could say the same for the 2016 Repub primary but to me, the pool of candidates then were ... less than stellar)

Oliversmumsarmy · 16/10/2020 09:38

Surely saying Trump is the better candidate is hyperbole? You wouldn't actually vote for him in reality would you

If I was American and I had to vote for one or the other then the answer would be yes.

I was about to start a business in the US before all this shit happened. If life had been different I would have been living there at least a few months of the year so I had read up on policies etc and I actually thought Trump would be better for the US than Biden.
Which is quite a frightening conclusion to come to.

I just got the impression that Biden was more about what he could do for other countries than what he could do for the US citizens.
Plus on trade, the UK would be stuffed under Biden. Trump at least seems to be open to some form of deal.

If anything if Trump didn’t open his mouth in public, came off Twitter and learned to calm down I think there would be a different result to this election.

Aesopfable · 16/10/2020 09:46

That's for female prostitutes. I'd imagine for transwomen prostitutes the rate would be even higher.

What is you basis for this presumption? Though if it is true then it also means the risk of transwomen who are not prositutes being murdered is lower than the risk to women who are not prositutes.

pequini · 16/10/2020 09:48

Please no. He's running against the devil incarnate here. Can we not encourage people to not vote for the man. He's the only hope we have. I normally care a lot about women's rights and the aggressive trans lobby. But now is NOT moment. The left need to mobilise behind him not pick him apart.

fatblackcatspaw · 16/10/2020 09:49

@WaxOnFeckOff

Trump is bad but Biden is no better. He's also a proven liar, has dodgy sexual history and has dementia.
dementia!!!
pequini · 16/10/2020 09:53

Biden does not have dementia! He has a stutter! This thread was so clearly started by the Trump trolls hoping to split the left. Hold your nerve people! Now is not the time to disintegrate into little righteous factions. The alt right are counting on us to do so!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/10/2020 09:55

Biden's shown his colours then - and they ain't women's colours.

Vermeil · 16/10/2020 09:55

South Park got it right years ago, your choice is between the giant douche and the shit sandwich.

FairFriday · 16/10/2020 09:59

This is one of the reasons trump will win. This and all the ‘defund the police’ and riots. Even my ‘normal’ family in the US are resigning themselves to this (and they live in the woo woo states).

ListeningQuietly · 16/10/2020 10:01

Biden knows that TRA is SO FAR DOWN THE LIST OF PRIORITIES
that only
PRO TRUMP
people raise it as a way to split the women's vote

If Biden wins he will work on
COVID
Trade
China
Climate Change
Employment
COVID
Trade
Climate change
and only in the 47th month give a stuff about TRAs

DO NOT fall for the QAnon conspiracies

When are we allowed to consider the rights of half the population as something worth voting for?
nauticant · 16/10/2020 10:02

What is you basis for this presumption?

I'd imagine some of their clients have very conflicted motivations for using transwomen prostitutes, along with a number of clients being surprised and angry when they find out they're with a transwoman prostitute (even though at some level they already knew). Obviously I could be wrong.

HelloToMyKitty · 16/10/2020 10:02

Please take the tinfoil off. This is Mumsnet not that many US voters on here even

ListeningQuietly · 16/10/2020 10:04

  • Mumsnet is searchable on google.
  • There are lots of US voters on Mumsnet
  • the Heil picks up MN stories and its MASSIVE in the US

Disinformation on here leaks out

ArabellaScott · 16/10/2020 10:05

This.

I think within the US, Trump is not good news, but at least he doesn't seem inclined to start wars overseas.

Obama presided over a huge increase in drone killings, and sanctioned the extrajudicial killing of Osama Bin Laden. I can't think of a US president that hasn't been problematic or at least moderately deranged - I think it's just baked into the system As far as I can tell, this is all symptomatic of a falling, failing empire. Unfortunate that it has implications for the rest of the world.

Annasgirl · 16/10/2020 10:06

@Aesopfable

You look at Trump and you would think anyone who stood against him should win.... and then you look at Biden.
And this is the tragedy for all of us who hoped for a better America - and I say this as a parent of a DD who wants to study there and now knows there is no way in hell that she can (irrespective of which of these men win, the rights of women and the tinderbox of race relations, means that it will not be a safe place for at least a decade. And at the end of the decade, at least we will have some idea of which side won).

Omg but I have to respond on this one though.

COVID: this a state matter, so Biden will not have much of an impact.

Trade/China: this is something Trump is much stronger on and you wouldn’t be voting Biden if this is your top issue.

Climate change: If you are green, Biden’s your man. But get real, CC is never a top priority

ripx4nutmeg · 16/10/2020 10:08

I think they're the two worst candidates I've seen out of every US election I've either followed or read about.

But to quote Gad Saad: 'You have one candidate who lies about the size of his penis because he's a narcissist, while the other lies that a man with a penis can be a woman because that's what his party supports'.

One is more of a threat to women, children, free speech, humour and science than the other, even if he doesn't realise that he is

Either way - whoever wins there’s going to be riots.
