Brighton TRAs bullying female small business owner

Urgh. This is happening in my home town and it’s shit.

Happy Maki is a small, vegan cafe and takeaway. It’s a very ethical business. All about sustainability and green energy. They plant a tree and feed a child for each wrap made. It’s a gift economy and the food is free with a suggested donation. All very hippy. You get the idea.

A FTM trans person approached the female owner of Happy Maki and asked for support in fundraising for their top surgery. I believe they wanted a poster in the window asking for money. The owner refused. When pressed the owner said it was against her religious beliefs - she is a follower of the Divine Truth which admittedly sounds a bit ‘out there’ but not entirely unexpected given the nature of her business.

Anyway the TRAs have really gone to town and are posting in every Brighton based Facebook group, Instagram and Twitter accusing the owner of Transphobia and calling for her to apologise:

twitter.com/makiunhappy/status/1314261939833446400?s=21

They seem to be getting a lot of support and gaining a lot of traction too with many saying they are now going to boycott the business.

I’m upset about this for a lot of reasons. Obviously the female owner being bullied and harassed in this way and them encouraging people to email her. The lovely takeaway losing business. It’s also pretty tone deaf to attack the hospitality sector in the midst of a global pandemic for not supporting one individual’s elective, life changing surgery.

Anyway, the reason I’m posting here is in solidarity with the owner Anna. And if any of you lovely lot are nearby then consider getting a Happy Maki takeaway. The food is delicious and I’m sure they could do with some support right now.

I won't post all the things I know from experience about you, Quaggars dear

Confused
PotholeParadies · 16/10/2020 01:34

Yes, the workers' statement on twitter. As far as I know, jj is not responsible for disgusting aesthetics in font colour. (I bet the Unhappy Maki tweeter used to post in cyan italics as a teen, just because they could.)

The beliefs are vair out-there, but yes, most religions are. Protection of belief is not just for very traditional religions. Besides, there is a major one which is majorly homophobic, but we don't talk about that!

NiceGerbil · 16/10/2020 01:35

Is 'that one' me, or someone else?

What a thing to refer to a person as! Whoever is is. 'that one'.

Interesting.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/10/2020 01:35

It's me, Gerbil

Interesting.

I claimed the crown of 'that one' first, so there!

This title is my precious.

The entertainer toy shop is run by an evangelical Christian. You may have noticed they're shut on Sundays. And he has a big focus on family.

Reading between the lines....

I don't think dominos gives loads of money to USA anti abortion things any more, I think he sold it.

But still.

Not fab. This omg biphobic thing is so flimsy.

When being bisexual is in itself transphobic, according to some. On Twitter. If that's the place we get our info now...

NiceGerbil · 16/10/2020 01:39

Lol.

Nice one you.. that ones.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/10/2020 01:39

It's me. I was the one who challenged jj on declining to post the actual words they used as a reason to slander this woman because "I'm on my phone". Yeah, you and everyone else. Quaggars and I go back a long way.

And I'll say it's not the first time I've been called an "it" on Mumsnet. Certain posters seem to like that kind of thing.

Confused Grin

Oookay (not sure what else to say to that)

PotholeParadies · 16/10/2020 01:53

While we're discussing allegations on twitter...

Content Warning: huge amounts of homophobia

This is the most recent submission. It would be great if those on the side of the Unhappy Maki crowd were willing to shout at trans right peeps posting this shite for real.

I notice there's zero engagement with posts about

All the shit that happens in the workplace to with women (look at the stats for sex discrimination claims since the government changed the rules)

That women get denied surgery for things that adversely affect their physical health and don't put fundraising posters up

That suddenly biphobia is very awful even though I've seen the concept dismissed as transphobic -on Twitter! The ultimate source of truth

That I buy stuff from people who could well have dodgy views, all the time

Go after the mainstream religions! Way more influential than

A vegan cafe owner in Brighton. Who, if she really hated non heterosexual people etc.... Probably would have a pretty bad time running a small vegan cafe in Brighton...

In my experience. Limited. Vegan cafe owners in Brighton, weird belief systems or not, are not that likely to be raging bigots.

I mean unless you storm in demanding bacon sarnies or something... Grin

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/10/2020 02:03

I still would like to hear the actual "biphobic" quote. Or I'll take it with the massive dose of salt I swallow with all TRA claims.

PotholeParadies · 16/10/2020 02:12

Not my claim but, I've done it.

The font really hurts my eyes.

The actual biphobic quote?
Assuming you've never clicked on anything outside of MN and must be a GC innocent....
OKKK.....

Quaagars · 16/10/2020 02:15

It's literally in the OP

I'm not seeing the words the woman who is the subject of the OP used Qaagars. What were they? Since you know.

PotholeParadies · 16/10/2020 02:24

Quaagars Any thoughts on the twitter screenshot? That's a genuine tweet, not someone tweeting a description of what they say someone else said.

Anyway, I've just had a look at that crowdfunder and it looks to me like Anna the café owner has done the young transman a massive favour by not displaying the poster, or rather the employees did. I'm sure they're surprised and overjoyed for their friend.

The fundraiser had been going since July 2019. Donations had really slowed down and the last donation was nearly a month ago.

Then a week ago, the money started pouring in, accompanied with comments about Anna. By my rough reckoning, they've got £600 before gofundme platform deductions in less than a week as a result of the social media furore. They would never have got that from Anna sticking a poster up in the window back in February.

It's like a small scale version of how people who would never have bought Troubled Blood otherwise went and bought it just because Pink News et al told them not to buy it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/10/2020 03:14

Whoever would have guessed?

NC249 · 16/10/2020 03:43

At the end of the day, if the owner doesn't want to put the poster up in her shop, then she has the right to say "no". Obviously the only people who know the full story about what was truly said are the owner and the FTM person. I hope that this is not just an excuse to ruin another persons business for no reason
