Brighton TRAs bullying female small business owner

Urgh. This is happening in my home town and it’s shit.

Happy Maki is a small, vegan cafe and takeaway. It’s a very ethical business. All about sustainability and green energy. They plant a tree and feed a child for each wrap made. It’s a gift economy and the food is free with a suggested donation. All very hippy. You get the idea.

A FTM trans person approached the female owner of Happy Maki and asked for support in fundraising for their top surgery. I believe they wanted a poster in the window asking for money. The owner refused. When pressed the owner said it was against her religious beliefs - she is a follower of the Divine Truth which admittedly sounds a bit ‘out there’ but not entirely unexpected given the nature of her business.

Anyway the TRAs have really gone to town and are posting in every Brighton based Facebook group, Instagram and Twitter accusing the owner of Transphobia and calling for her to apologise:

twitter.com/makiunhappy/status/1314261939833446400?s=21

They seem to be getting a lot of support and gaining a lot of traction too with many saying they are now going to boycott the business.

I’m upset about this for a lot of reasons. Obviously the female owner being bullied and harassed in this way and them encouraging people to email her. The lovely takeaway losing business. It’s also pretty tone deaf to attack the hospitality sector in the midst of a global pandemic for not supporting one individual’s elective, life changing surgery.

Anyway, the reason I’m posting here is in solidarity with the owner Anna. And if any of you lovely lot are nearby then consider getting a Happy Maki takeaway. The food is delicious and I’m sure they could do with some support right now.

If ten workers are prepared to walk out, there is clearly a serious problem.

jj1968 you’d agree then that there’s a serious problem with the NHS 'over-diagnosing' children having transgender treatment?

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/12/12/childrens-transgender-clinic-hit-35-resignations-three-years/

guardian.ng/features/health/uk-doctors-resigning-over-transgender-lunacy-targeting-children/

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6897269/Workers-transgender-clinic-quit-concerns-unregulated-live-experiments-children.html

‘Many doctors in the United Kingdom have decided to resign from their posts rather than continue to participate in the chemical and surgical mutilations that are taking place in the name of “tolerance” and “love.”’

‘Five whistleblowing workers at the only NHS transgender clinic in Britain have quit over fears children as young as three are going through unnecessary gender reassignment treatment.’

Workers didn't like the furlough laws.

As they walked out, they don't legally get to claim benefits.

PurpleHoodie · 16/10/2020 07:21

The Brighton workers that is.

ItsLateHumpty · 16/10/2020 07:24

Well quite, Purple, or they’re very slow thinkers to only come to their ‘unfair work’ conclusions months after the original poster query, or maybe it was apropos of nothing. Definitely not linked to furlough payments changing. Oh no, that’d be dishonest.

Quaagars · 16/10/2020 07:27

@Butterer

Nice use of 'OKKK' and all *@Quaagars* . Once you see the last three letters, you can't unsee them... You got a sticky k or something?
Once you see the last three letters you can't unsee them Lol, what?! Grin Yes. I did have a knobbish keyboard last night. Didn't mean anything sinister lol! Hope it's feeling better today
PurpleHoodie · 16/10/2020 08:27

Fron Anna's blog response.

During this process I have had staff move to other countries and not inform us, or actively turn down shifts, only to then ask me why they haven’t received furlough pay. This would be fraud and the furlough scheme has highlighted the issue of entitlement that so many of us have to varying degrees. We have always explained kindly to people why this is an issue and why they can’t legally receive furlough in these scenarios

Well, well, well. Are we surprised?

WhatWouldJKRDo · 16/10/2020 08:53

I admire so many of the posters here - you’ve made your points so clearly in the face of relentless, misogynistic whataboutery.

I tip my hat to you all.

SapphosRock · 16/10/2020 09:02

Nice to see the owner receiving supportive messages on Twitter now, especially over the last 24 hours.
I have attached some of the Facebook comments that weren't so kind. Even though the TRAs claim they were attempting cancel culture they know that's what they were really trying to achieve.

I take it that the woman needs to money raising for her "surgery" because the NHS won't do it for free?

Yes, because a young woman with healthy breasts wanting a double mastectomy isn't seen as a priority for a publicly funded health service.
Needmoresleep · 16/10/2020 09:35

No one has mentioned the other workers.

They have not quit, they have seemingly accepted the furlough rules that apply to them. Do they deserve to lose their jobs should the TRAs succeed in bringing down the business.

Some might argue that they do, as they were not brave enough to call out transphobia. I would be more worried about the impact on their families of them losing income. Surely even the most dedicated left wing TRA can see there is a balance to be found between job security/poverty reduction and a private mastectomy.

FairFriday · 16/10/2020 09:40

The reactions are interesting - the reaction to the word ‘no’ and to an opinion you don’t like.

Had they been trying to raise money for experimental treatment abroad for a sick child and she said no (and say her opinion was that this was an experimental treatment with little chance of success so cruel to put the child through this) would people be baying for her business to fail and for her to walk through the streets in sackcloth and ashes?

SapphosRock · 16/10/2020 09:41

The TRAs really need to re-evaluate their thinking and apologise to Anna for the misogyny, harassment and bullying. It's ironic they see themselves as the victims here.

I saw Posie Parker waded in on Facebook. One of the first times I've agreed with her. Go Posie 💪

Apology? And in other news, it’s been announced that hell has actually frozen over...

FloralBunting · 16/10/2020 09:51

Sapphos did you just say Go Posie?

I've just fallen off my chair!😁

SapphosRock · 16/10/2020 09:54

Hahaha well it is 2020 Floral. The year of surprises.

I think this is the straw that broke the camel's back. I'm officially radicalised.

😲 Is it too early for a drink?
ArabellaScott · 16/10/2020 10:09

I think it calls for a toast, Deliciously. Maybe with egg?

FairFriday · 16/10/2020 10:09

I’m thinking marmite.

IwishNothingButTheBestForYou2 · 16/10/2020 10:10

Can you make a drink out of weetabix?

TyroBurningDownTheCloset · 16/10/2020 10:11

DeliciouslyFemale It's always booze o'clock somewhere in the world. Just develop a trans-zone time identity and you're good to go.

And I'd like to be the first to offer my wholehearted thanks to those individuals whose sheer unrelenting twonkery means we can now victory-dance about the place chanting "We got Sappho, we got Sappho!"

FairFriday · 16/10/2020 10:11

I’ve seen weetabix breakfast drink.

IwishNothingButTheBestForYou2 · 16/10/2020 10:12
