Is it wrong to read Stephen King now?

I agree with JKR not SK on the issue of whether it is possible to change sex. I am horrified at the abuse that JKR has received and believe that trans rights should never be at the expense of women and girls.

I recently read a Stephen King book and enjoyed it and posted about enjoying it on a book thread on here. Someone suggested I shouldn't be reading Stephen King because of his views.

Surely this is just as bad as people trying to erase JKR for her views and does women's rights no good? Am i missing something, am I wrong for enjoying these books?

I never read about the author.

If the book is good. Then read it. If it’s shite just delete from kindle

littlbrowndog · 11/10/2020 20:22

Yeah I got th3 ban then the further ban cos I didn’t understand the original ban. But anyway a nice mod sorted me out otherwise I would have been on the ban for another 7 days.

But all good now 😘😘😘

littlbrowndog · 11/10/2020 20:23

Missed you my reindeer ❤️❤️

Saucery · 11/10/2020 20:25

Sleeping Beauties had an uncomfortable undertone of putting women on a pedestal. Very.....binary thinking, intriguingly, considering his views on TWAW.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 11/10/2020 20:27

Banning you for not understanding the ban seems a little harsh

I’d never be able to post again if understanding stuff was actually required

Ive lost my emojis...where’d they go? I’ll have to do the mumsnet ones Grin

Excellent news

Yay to the lovely ban explaining mod 💐

Right I’ll calm down now

Balhammom · 11/10/2020 20:35

I assume this is a wind-up post? Or does OP really just read books by people who have opinions she shares? I'd be fascinated to know if she also only listens to music, cook recipes, works with (etc) those who share her world view.

I suddenly see how some of these crazy people, like the alt-right, perpetuate their views, just by blocking out any opposing opinion from their lives. I find this sort of "echo-chamber" mentality genuinely scary.

TheChampagneGalop · 11/10/2020 20:37

Welcome back littlbrowndog!

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 11/10/2020 20:45

I think you’ve misunderstood the OP balhammon

She is saying she WANTS to read the books

LoeliaPonsonby · 11/10/2020 20:55

Don’t believe in cancel culture. I don’t read any more NK Jemisin because I thought her books were a bit crap, certainly not worth the hype. And I did feel like her triology shoehorned in some gender bending nonsense because it was iNtErEsTinG and contemporary, rather than it saying anything important about the characters or people’s experiences in gender. It was another series that could have done with a good editor.

Neil Gaiman always struck me as up his own arse and not all that.

I would still read Stephen King, Atwood (especially Atwood) but I’m too old to put people on pedestals.

NellieEllie · 11/10/2020 20:57

Aargh. I think the moment we have to approve the political/social views of an author before we are allowed to enjoy reading them, our society will have fallen into a dangerous place. I love Dickens, but wow, he was a misogynist abusive man. I like Neil Gaiman and Margaret Atwood too. Requiring people to match our views before we engage with them or their works is not very grown up to my mind,

DrDreReturns · 11/10/2020 21:00

@DidoLamenting yep their books are way too long. The Order of the Phoenix was second only to the Lord if the Rings in terms of the motivation I had to muster to get through it!

Posters on here do that all the time.
Deliriumoftheendless · 11/10/2020 21:08

No one is under my obligation to read anything. If you feel someone’s views put you off their work stop reading them. Don’t tell everyone else they have to do the same.

I haven’t read Stephen King since I was late teens so I’m not really bothered about his work but I do like Neil Gaiman (as my user name shows) and I won’t be burning, binning or advising others to avoid his books or comics as some are some of my favourite stories.

Likewise I’m not starting reading Harry Potter just because I agree with JK Rowling and think her treatment has been disgusting.

WhoWants2Know · 11/10/2020 21:10

OP wanted to discuss one particular book by SK and was unhappy that a poster said that she personally no longer reads his books since that statement.

Sometimes events outside of a book (or film/piece of art, etc.) can actually change our experience of that book, and I think it's fine to talk about that.

I don't go out of my way to avoid particular artists or writers based on their beliefs. But sometimes events happen that change my feelings about content that I might previously have enjoyed.

It's actually a really awful feeling. I hate it.

Terrace58 · 11/10/2020 21:13

I generally try to separate the art from the artist. You don’t have to like a person to enjoy a book.

Quaagars · 11/10/2020 21:16

Surely people who would boycott SK just because they don't agree with him are just the same as those saying they're boycotting JKR.
Bit hypocritical to me.

Not biting. Name’s not Barlow Wink

Only if they also send him rape and death threats, and try to get his publishers to dump him.
