Is it wrong to read Stephen King now?

I agree with JKR not SK on the issue of whether it is possible to change sex. I am horrified at the abuse that JKR has received and believe that trans rights should never be at the expense of women and girls.

I recently read a Stephen King book and enjoyed it and posted about enjoying it on a book thread on here. Someone suggested I shouldn't be reading Stephen King because of his views.

Surely this is just as bad as people trying to erase JKR for her views and does women's rights no good? Am i missing something, am I wrong for enjoying these books?

seems to be a higher % of ‘difficult people’ shall we say than the general public.

Or perhaps we are more likely to know about it.

FairFriday · 12/10/2020 11:21

True that... or maybe if you have loads of money you don’t try to hide it!

The difference for me is that I am certain that nobody advising anyone else not to read Stephen King has been writing to his publisher insisting they stop publishing him NOW or writing RIP tweets about him.

It's fine to advise others why you reject the work of a writer/artist etc. It's not fine to prevent them from enjoying it themselves.

FairFriday · 12/10/2020 15:08

Choosing to buy one authors book over another's (because they had said or done something you find distasteful) really can’t be compared to actually going after someone as if they had been the person who had purposely run over your granny.

Absolutely

And that’s exactly what happened on the ops original thread, people were just saying why they didn’t feel they could enjoy the books anymore

well almost. They came on for no other reason than to say why they won't read Stephen King. The purpose of the post was to discuss the content of the book not the deeds of the author.

And of course it's not the same as writing to his publisher and some of the vile attacks against JKR on Twitter but must have been an attempt to make me decide against reading his books in the future or to cast a gloss over the enjoyment of the book I'd already read (and they hadn't).

I understand that, but threads frequently go off piste, ive just seen one where the actions of person A are being discussed and for some weird reason its turned into having a pop at person B. Unfortunately its really difficult to control

But at least no one was saying you can’t read what you want, ive seen that sort of thing as well

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 12/10/2020 15:55

Sorry, didnt reply fully

Or it was just giving their opinion and expressing their disappointment

No one suggested that you not read the books...just that they didnt want to

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 12/10/2020 15:56

I strongly disagree with his stance and would probably be disgruntled by giving him my money. However, if I was a fan of his work, I wouldn't want to deprive myself of something that makes me happy. I'd just buy his stuff second hand to avoid giving him a penny 😀

Saucery · 12/10/2020 16:25

There must be someone else in his life with whom he's trying to maintain a relationship, and who is fully engaged with the TWAW cult.

Yep. I won’t speculate on here, but the need to maintain family relationships can make people try and balance on that fence.

chilling19 · 12/10/2020 16:47

I have read most of his books, and cannot believe that the man who wrote Delores Claiborne is on board with TWAW. Shame on you SK - you are safer than JK and are acting like a coward.

Iggly · 12/10/2020 16:51

I can’t always separate the art from the artist - because it depends on what they’ve done/said and how that falls on my moral compass. It isn’t black or white in my opinion.

AsTreesWalking · 12/10/2020 16:57

I know someone who told me that she will no longer read books that don't have a female protagonist. I'm afraid I laughed. How absurd.
It's perfectly possible to like books by authors you don't agree with. I have almost no common ground with Philip Pullman, for instance, but I still enjoy his Sally Lockheart books, because they are well written, well researched, and exciting (I read a lot of children's/YA books for work, believe me, his are among the best)
I don't read Joanne Harris because Chocolat was more nauseating than I can stomach, and I don't want any more, thanks.
There aggressions reasons not to read a book, but 'principle' isn't a good one.

AsTreesWalking · 12/10/2020 16:59

I corrected 'aggressions '!
Are reasons

PotholeParadies · 12/10/2020 17:13

Okay, SK must be on here and not like my post?
Fair enough.

Saucery · 12/10/2020 17:17

Ha, rather proves my point. It will be ‘speculation ‘ or ‘generalisation’.
PotholeParadies · 12/10/2020 17:28

Meh. If MN don't want to host that post, they don't have to.

King's writing has always suggested a nuanced viewpoint to me. He doesn't do that tiresome thing of trying to demonstrate his woke credentials by pretending male and female criminality have the exact same patterns, and nor does he pretend that all women are saintly beings.

I did see it

Just don’t remember it 😩

Can’t think there was anything horrifically wrong with It

River Of Grass Unitarian Church, Of which his daughter is a pastor, specifically welcomes LGBTQ+ people of faith.
I don’t see any point tiptoeing around issues tbh.
He has the right to believe in and support what he wants. He doesn’t have the right to use his media power to help fan the flames of those who wish another author dead.
Might not have anything to do with the above, but then again, it might, who knows?

BillywilliamV · 12/10/2020 17:39

Well, Shakespeare was sexist, Jane Austen was a slavery apologist, Nancy Mitford came from a family of notorious Nazis, Charles Dickens was vile to his wife and went for 16 and 17 year olds, Gearge Orwell was a womaniser
Where exactly does it all end?

PotholeParadies · 12/10/2020 17:39

It does rather look like I said something incredibly awful about him, doesn't it? Grin Someone will be screenshotting that hole in the thread as a riposte to the screen shots of death threats to JK!

Yep

And i really think they should be more descriptive when they delete

Would be more helpful 😀

So i dont say the same obviously heinous thing

PotholeParadies · 12/10/2020 17:49

Huh, cross-post.

Saucery

Dearie me. I didn't actually know he even had a daughter. I was just guessing that there was someone he didn't want to argue with, based on observations of human nature gleaned from reading SK books.

Also, I myself have a best friend who is TWAW who I can't bear to lose.
