Scary stuff

NotBadConsidering · 03/10/2020 22:20

Unsurprising. We knew they were doing it and we know a few of those that do.

persistentwoman · 03/10/2020 22:21

Men desperate to stop women talking. Twas ever thus.

Mandalalorianna · 03/10/2020 22:23

Apologies for my techno-numptiness but what does it mean for us?

CaraDuneRedux · 03/10/2020 22:24

Creepy.

Not technically hard. The question really is "why would you want to?" I mean, we all know the answer - this is just a high tech, anonymised form of the coercive control techniques found among abusive men.

But don't these guys ever stop for a moment and have a "Hans, are we the bad guys?" moment?

yourhairiswinterfire · 03/10/2020 22:27

Can't have women talking about things the menz haven't permitted us to talk about now, can we? Got to keep a manly eye on that shit.

RandomGel · 03/10/2020 22:54

Has anyone Tweeted about this yet - I am not on Twitter for a variety of personal reasons - and copied in our allies? Another example of harassment and encroachment by MRA’s into female spaces.
Slightly pathetic too, poor bambino’s who have absolutely else nothing to do but hound women under the guise of ‘transphobia’. Beep - red flag. Will my now name be added to the roll list of honour.

CaraDuneRedux · 03/10/2020 22:57

Indeed.

Under his eye.

OvaHere · 03/10/2020 22:57

I wonder if we could take the keywords and have a thread where we copy and paste them over and over just to screw with the algorithm or however the fuck it works?

Maybe a naice recipe thread where we bung the keywords at the end of every post.

SunsetBeetch · 03/10/2020 23:04

Utterly pathetic. What small men.

I hope you are not in jest. I would join you.

RozWatching · 03/10/2020 23:21

Are the Thighs still about? They could run a decoy thread on FWR. If that doesn't put them off, I don't know what will.

stumbledin · 03/10/2020 23:37

I think this is one of those occassions when the fact that mumsnet is widely read by both friendly and unfriendly people, this thread and the original will mean this stupid creation will get publicity it doesn't deserve.

And quite honestly given the list of words that it will be looking for, virtually every post on FWR will be listed.

It will just show that FWR's primary discussion is about trans issues!!!!!

And if it was being used as implied it might be, no one would be left of FWR.

From my experience those doing the reporting are those on mumsnet who have decided they are the arbitrators of the correct tone. Or worse still, want to stop us from talking about an actual reality because they dont like it. They want a sanitised version of life.

And unfortunately because they are on mumsnet, MNHQ seems to take what they say as correct and never query or ask for clarification. This 5th column is far more dangerous as they themselves think they are working in our / FWR best interests!

DeRigueurMortis · 04/10/2020 00:32

@Mandalalorianna

Apologies for my techno-numptiness but what does it mean for us?

Nothing in reality.

All that it does is automate searches that could in theory be done manually.

When you post on a public forum then you should do so knowing that people can search/screenshot the content.

The purpose of this code is simply to gather data about threads and prolific posters - presumably to enable mass reporting which TRA's have used to great effect on Twitter.

The difference here is that MN moderation is done by real people, not an algorithm so weight of reporting numbers is not in and of itself a factor.

It's the content of the posts that matter and if they don't breech talk guidelines then they stand - even if thousands of people report it.

It's simply a form of creepy digital voyeurism created by someone whose got too much time of their hands and gets off on trying to control women.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/10/2020 00:41

Probably all it means for us is that now there's more tangible evidence of men trying to target MN.

DreamingBe · 04/10/2020 00:49

I notice the word "passing" is being counted. I wonder how it differentiates between discussions of the party game pass the parcel, family members who don't pass the salt and so on and so forth. There must be an awful lot of threads about not passing on MN! Grin

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 04/10/2020 00:54

I think it proves that there are an awful lot of saddos out there, coding with one hand.

Thelnebriati · 04/10/2020 00:57

Its flagged one of the trans posters.

StillNotAGirl · 04/10/2020 01:01

I believe it's only looking at this board. This one is a rather crude data scraper, I'm quite sure there are others that are more sophisticated.

Others that are more sophisticated also focused on this board

This made me laugh, thank you!

The list on the screenshot attachment is creepy as hell though

Here’s a few keywords for their viewing pleasure
biologically female/male transgender as a noun transgenderism
scare-quotes passing

Blessed be the fruit, ladies, and Nolite te bastardes carborundorum

Bless them, imagine having a life so tragic and empty that monitoring women for wrong think feels heroic.

IDanielRadcliffe · 04/10/2020 07:41

It’s also picked up RatRolyPoly who I think has the opposite view to most on this board.

FloralBunting · 04/10/2020 07:44

This is one tool being used. There will be others.

The point is not that we are being watched; it's a public forum, we knew that. The point is that is a list of targeted posters, some of whom have already been reported and banned, and it's a little internet gidget to facilitate knowing exactly which posters to focus on.

MNHQ knows that Tinsel, for example, has some long running support threads here, and is obviously a person of interest for these people, and it's not going to be because they like her dry wit, it's because she is rather significant at pointing out that transitioning doesn't happen in a vacuum - it directly affects women. I think they should be proactive in minding that she is not maliciously targetted, myself.
