according to nick cohen on twitter, amanda craig novellist has been dropped as a judge from mslexia because she signed the jkr letter - a womens writing magazine! - absolutely shocking. and frightening.

I feel perplexed at KMH's stance. Craig hasn't even said she agrees with JKR's views, just that she stands against all the bullying and misogony and rape threats. Also, as usual it seems the women who speak out suffer more than the men.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 29/09/2020 19:58

I've just emailed and will cancel my subscription once I've heard back from them.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 29/09/2020 19:58

"I offered to step down. I didn't complain."

Like butter wouldn't melt Hmm

And shame on Mslexia for doing it. Grow a spine for goodness sake.

KMH is part of the super-woke (and young, privileged) children's literature circle that includes a bestselling author who has fundraised for Mermaids and bullied Rachel Rooney (My Body Is Me!) and others. She's not exceptional in her stance.

Mslexia, on the other hand, should know better.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 29/09/2020 20:13

@Helmetbymidnight

some self-righteous child. but the responsibility lies with mslexia- they should have laughed and told her to fuck off. why they didn't is bewildering.
This, exactly. As with Gillian Philip.
Siablue · 29/09/2020 20:14

I agree that she does not deserve a pile on. It would have been honourable of her to resign if that was her view ( properly resign rather than saying I will resign if you don’t sack Amanda).

The thing that gets me is that she said to Amanda Craig you need to consider who you are aligning yourself to. But has Kiran considered who she is aligning herself with. People who send death and rape threats. And this is at a time when we are facing a national crisis and the number of women who are being murdered as a result of domestic abuse has almost doubled.

Also everyone knows that the point of a panel is to get people with different views otherwise you would just have one person who can tell us the one acceptable view we all can have.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 29/09/2020 20:14

I'm angry and upset at Mslexia but only mildly surprised.

Their competitions and submissions are open to anyone who identifies as a woman. The woman running their Facebook group uses the word "womxn" and stated her pronouns when introducing herself to the group. I think they've been travelling along the TWAW path a while.

This has just cemented my belief that they've lost sight of their aim, to promote and encourage women's writing in a world where misogyny makes it so much harder for us to have confidence in our words, to find time to write, to be published, to be praised for our writing.

I'll be cancelling my subscription and going to have a browse of Amanda Craig novels.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 29/09/2020 20:19

The letter was against making death and rape threats against women you disagree with.
So Mslexia is in favour of death and rape threats. Rightio.

lakesidewinter · 29/09/2020 20:25

I'm am struggling to understand why any organization, let alone one that it meant to be is some way pro woman is against speaking out when a woman receives death threats etc.
They are seriously ok with women being threatened if these women happen to disagree with them on a topic?

nowiamhuffy · 29/09/2020 20:30

I honestly feel quite sick about this. Women must toe the line at all times, even to the extent of not speaking out against rape and death threats made to another woman who doesn't completely toe the line.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 29/09/2020 20:52

I’ll be asking them if they endorse the screenshots on this tweet Angry

That’s the line my complaint will take - I presume you as an organisation are in favour of death threats to women who say things you don’t agree with
SerenityNowwwww · 29/09/2020 20:58

Shown their true colours. They haven't responded to any tweets either.

And I'm sure the person who kicked this off - on twitter remember - they didnt pick up the phone or just withrdaw themselves - is not getting a teensy % of the vitriol and threats that women get for standing up for women. Its not right to hurl insults and threats - we are better than that. But I am sure they is not scared for their life.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 29/09/2020 21:01

Is it me having a Luddite moment or have they removed the “contact us” page?

WearyandBleary · 29/09/2020 21:02

Another subscriber here. Jeez most of their subscribers must be MNers....

Nope it’s not you - they have removed their contact details the complete cowards

mslexia.co.uk/?page_id=361

I’m embarrassed for themselves! It’ll be nothing In comparison to the anger & abuse jkr has received & they can’t even deal with that

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 29/09/2020 21:13

You can still get to the Contact Us page via the link on the page Glinner linked to above.

EdgeOfACoin · 29/09/2020 21:15

The letter in support of JKR didn't even say that the signatories agreed with her views on transgender people. It just said that the threats were unacceptable.

If you sack someone for agreeing with that statement, you basically agree that JKR deserved the abuse.

Nice to see that mslexia is supporting women writers.

Ahh that’s what wasn’t working for me but is now working again Confused

@Glinner please ignore!

KatVonlabonk · 29/09/2020 21:22

How can they not see how terribly wrong this is?

Hope the press cover it. Daylight.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 29/09/2020 21:25

Ah, didn't realise Kit09 had posted a link too. I thought going via Glinner's page was the only way to find it.

JKRisagryff · 29/09/2020 21:30

This is horrifying. As PPs have said she wasn’t even saying she agrees with jkr’s political views. So now you can lose your job for saying you oppose sexual/death threats because those sexual/death threats have been made by TRAs? It’s just pure and utter madness.

JKRisagryff · 29/09/2020 21:40

I wonder how many of the men who signed this letter will lose their jobs?Hmm
