according to nick cohen on twitter, amanda craig novellist has been dropped as a judge from mslexia because she signed the jkr letter - a womens writing magazine! - absolutely shocking. and frightening.

"...if a Mslexia judge expresses views that threaten to undermine Mslexia's climate of welcome and inclusivity, we will always ask her to step down from that role."

The sheer, monumental fucking stupidity of it. How can supporting another writer undermine the climate of welcome and inclusivity? Are they really so dim that they think speaking out against violent threats to another woman undermines inclusivity, when in fact it does the opposite? It's Orwellian. It's saying the exact opposite of what it purports to say. It's saying freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength, war is peace.

I thought after yesterday I couldn't despise them more. Turns out I could.

This.

I think it says quite a lot that the tweet doesn’t say “here is our statement in response to yesterday’s news about our dropping one of our judges” or similar. There’s no heading or hashtag, you can’t search for it so unless you click on
The link you've no idea what it’s about

Utter utter cowards

queenofknives · 30/09/2020 12:10

Fucking hell. Well let's see if they can stay afloat when they've got no more women buying their magazine or entering their competitions because of their contempt for us.

Kit19 · 30/09/2020 12:16

Ahhhh and suddenly it ALL becomes clear

KMH organised this letter
www.theguardian.com/books/2020/sep/30/more-than-200-writers-and-publishers-sign-letter-in-support-of-trans-and-non-binary-people

LadySeaThing · 30/09/2020 12:19

They will lose a lot of subscriptions but also gain lots of new ones from wokesters, and presumably also from TRA, Rowling-hating transwomen. So they might not go under, they'll just turn into (even more of) a tiresome purity-spiral peddler with no interesting writing, only virtue-signalling writing.

Time40 · 30/09/2020 12:20

I've just cancelled my subscription, and I told them they ought to be ashamed of themselves. It looks as though quite a few of us on this thread have cancelled - I wonder how many they have lost this morning?

Time40 · 30/09/2020 12:24

....it must be all go in Mslexia Towers this morning. I had an email straight back from them - just 'cancellation noted and comments will be passed on'

SerenityNowwwww · 30/09/2020 12:25

Nah. They will all be working from their flats (Brighton and hove perhaps) complaining about how threatened they feel.

SerenityNowwwww · 30/09/2020 12:27

I leaned a new fact today. Weasel is a favourite insult of mine so I looked it up: ‘Female stoats and weasels are referred to as a bitch, doe or Jill’. So now we all know.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 30/09/2020 12:28

If this person's tweet is representative it looks like Mslexia is already falling foul of the ultra woke it's pandering to.

😂😂😂😂 I love it when it’s never ever good enough!!!!
SerenityNowwwww · 30/09/2020 12:30

Quite demanding little things aren’t they? Or was the the queen responding ?

2Rebecca · 30/09/2020 12:34

Never heard of this mag but so disappointed with Jeanette Winterson who should know what a woman is. She has written about women cross dressing and latterly a transman but her characters always seemed to acknowledge and be comfortable in their femaleness

RoyalCorgi · 30/09/2020 12:34

I cancelled and I haven't had an email back. Maybe they're reeling under the weight of cancellations. I hope so.

SerenityNowwwww · 30/09/2020 12:36

JW jumped overboard a while ago didn’t she?

LaVitaPuoEsserePiuBella · 30/09/2020 12:40

@ScribblingMilly

I've just ordered Lie of the Land about a discontented London couple who move to Devon. Much rancour and lovely descriptions of the countryside is what I'm expecting.
I recommend it highly. There's an undercurrent of anti-Brexit feeling running through the text, too. Enjoy.
2Rebecca · 30/09/2020 12:41

It's only 2years ago that she gave the Dimbleby lecture talking about the importance of sex and how sex influences your experience. She didn't think it was your femininity that mattered then.

Kit19 · 30/09/2020 12:44

Yes serenity she’s another of the successful in a secure relationship late middle aged lesbians who will never have to accommodate TW beyond sitting alongside them at some literary do & seems unable to see beyond her own circumstances

Whatsnewpussyhat · 30/09/2020 12:55

It's never good enough. There will always be more demands. Where has this no longer using "identify as" crap come from?!

Because that means they can no longer say a woman is anyone who "identifies as" one. Hmmm

ArabellaScott · 30/09/2020 12:57

Ah, well. Good luck to you, MsLexia, you've made your position very clear. You're not on the side of women anymore.

RoyalCorgi · 30/09/2020 13:05

Never heard of this mag but so disappointed with Jeanette Winterson who should know what a woman is.

Winterson is ghastly. I gave up on her a long time ago. I'm more disappointed to see Max Porter's name on the list, as he's a good writer.

Not surprised to see Elizabeth "world's most boring columnist" Day on there. Most of the rest I haven't heard of, but I intend to stay as far away from them as possible.

Cuntysnark · 30/09/2020 13:07

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ve just ordered Lie of the Land.

WineTheBobbin · 30/09/2020 13:08

I've never heard of this magazine either. But it's not something i'll read now. I really can't understand how women think it's ever ok for another woman to receive rape and death threats. Don't they see that the hate online doesn't exist in a vacuum. It effects people in real life. What about the 2 women every week who are killed by male violence. I'm just so sick of it all! But so grateful for women like JK Rowling standing up for us. First ever post here but have been reading threads since JK spoke out.

MagicalThinking · 30/09/2020 13:12

That Mslexia statement - Mslexia exists to support all writers who identify as women, regardless of their background or current circumstancestances, blah, blah blah

They should have just written "Mslexia exists to support all writers who identify as women, regardless of their sex."

Another one who will be buying at least one Amanda Craig novel and is currently 3/4 of the way through Troubled Blood.
