The awful trend on Twitter

Hi, I don't post often, but I've seen the awful twitter trend today in regard to J K Rowling, I just feel so scared and defeated about women's rights, why are more people not up in arms and defending us? I also fear for her and women's safety, as some of these TRA's seem really unhinged.

News. A paper in tomcats would be worth reading compared to that rubbish.

SoManyActivities · 16/09/2020 21:23

@Malahaha

The fear of Rowling is off the scale. Let's remember that. This is all fueled by fear: because they know a) she is right and b) they can't cancel her and c) she is loved, read, and listened to by people whose heads are screwed on tightly.
This. A million times this!

Indeed it's amazing how far you can self indulgently build a profile on promoting a cause in which you have no personal investment nor stand to suffer any consequences.

OvaHere · 16/09/2020 22:35

This is quite good. Apologies if it's a repost.

My highschool girlfriend retweeted a critical tweet about JKR. Nothing too bad or anything but I could have sworn she would see it...For some reason that was upsetting.

Oh are the Robert Galbraith books good? I've never really paid any attention to them before but am almost at the end of my unread book supply - I'll order 'Cuckoo's Calling' to try!
I am a crime novel fan not read these until the furore about JKR started earlier this year. V well written v enjoyable. I prefer muchly to HP

Well done JK. I will continue to support you.

emilybrontescorsett · 17/09/2020 07:23

Yes dh has read all the Robert Galbraith books and says they are excellent.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 17/09/2020 07:36

fatblackcatspaw thanks. I've bought Cuckoo Calling for my e-reader and would usually wait til I'd finished it to buy a sequel (I'm finishing The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle first), but might just by the
others already; it's always good to have some substantial length books in reserve...

I started reading HP to my younger two when JK hit the news as it reminded me I'd only read them to my eldest. My middle one isn't much of a reader and had seen some of the films but reading them aloud to him and his brother meant he had the chance to realise for himself and say with astonishment "there's so much more going on in the books than the films" Grin

Janice Turner having a go at Jedward, she's great. I hope the link works, have been told by the Times that it will, even though it doesn't state 'share token'

RedDogsBeg · 17/09/2020 10:10

Sadly highame it doesn't!

There's a good article in the Daily Mail online from Gillian Philip who was sacked by her publishers for supporting JKR, also there was a good one yesterday from Piers Morgan on free speech and the hypocrisy of 'liberal' celebrities.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 17/09/2020 11:31

Thomas Harris used the same trope in The Silence of the Lambs. P. D. James used it in Devices and Desires.

Clearly, the political climate was different then (even though the film version of Silence of the Lambs did generate some controversy, even though the script (and book) made it clear Buffalo Bill wasn't a 'true' transsexual. But I guess that would be controversial nowadays for a whole plethora of other reasons.

It's just another stick they use to beat a woman who has the temerity not to offer a scarlet-faced apology and slink off into the sunset. She isn't 'cancelled', she's keeping on talking.

The lengths they'll go to to silence people absolutely frighten me. It makes me wonder what they'll stop at. JKR is a very courageous woman.

This is a death threat.
Where does the law stand on this? It’s violent no doubt
littlbrowndog · 17/09/2020 15:04

It’s been reported 100 s of times. But twitter lets it stay up 🤷‍♀️

MarshaBradyo · 17/09/2020 15:06

You couldn’t do the same thing to someone who was in a minority group?

HUCKMUCK · 17/09/2020 15:17

Apologies if this has already been mentioned but do these people also think that JK Rowling believes a percentage of the population are wizards?

I am actually heartened by that tweet. Thanks littlbrowndog, although it doesn't say a lot about the state of things that I was a bit surprised to see it.

I can’t believe we have no recourse to that kind of hatred on SM
