"She looks like a right tramp"

On our local FB group (I know!) somebody has shared a video of a couple dealing drugs outside his front garden. She appears to be weighing out a quantity.
There's been a lot of discussion about logging it with the police, how they're a well-known problem around the area etc. And then somebody has just said, ""She looks like a right tramp".

I'm so frustrated with this comment, the subtext and the message it sends. I want to respond calmly, I don't want to let it go unaddressed, but I can't find the words.

How do you think I should respond?

Have the anti-feminists decided that going all-in on simply being tedious sock-puppeting wankers is the tactic that's going to finally bring down FWR?

Moranne · 11/08/2020 07:24

I too have reported this thread, I've report Lizzie and Notre for troll-hunting.

I am so sick of people saying sexism doesn't exist, I'm imagining it, I'm making a big deal out of nothing etc. This thread feels pretty much the same. It's like arguing with Trump and his soundbites. I feel outnumbered and silenced.

I also have a screen shot of the FB discussion in question. I know that some will think, "how very convenient" but as a FB moderator I've learned to take a snip just in case. I'm not sure if I'm happy to share with other posters as I want to remain anonymous, but I also want to defend what I know is true.

Thank you to all of those who took the time to write some words of support.

That thought passed my mind too.

As I posted OP, it’s actually irrelevant what word was used, it was derogatory and only aimed at one sex. You were right to call it out.

All the ploppers posting re regional meanings of words, and insults, troll hunting, and goading clearly missed the point.

Accidentally or on purpose, it was obtuse.

Moranne · 11/08/2020 07:40

As I say, I’ve reported the thread and I’m going to take this experience as a prompt to a break from MN for a while. Whether I can manage that or not is another thing Smile

Wishing each and everyone of you a peaceful day.

Not me as I'm known as a feminist and point out everyday sexism...every day.

I reported the thread several times last night and pointed out the obvious with examples as I too am sick of rule breaking and dishonesty on this forum.

birthdaybelle · 11/08/2020 08:00

I'd take it to mean she looks homeless. Still not nice but not sexist I don't think

Tramp = slut is quite old fashioned. Older people would use it in that context. My parent’s generation.

Younger people generally use it to mean scruffy. Sometimes about themselves ie I arrived looking like a right tramp.

If it was a male and female drug dealing and both looked scruffy it would imply a misogynist use. Why else single out the woman? Was the man dressed in a suit?

ItsLateHumpty · 11/08/2020 10:52

Interesting deletions. Glad the derail now seems to be sorted.

OP it’s an interesting insight into everyday sexism, and how we just don’t really ‘see’ it because it’s almost wallpaper. Did you get anymore comment on FB?

Yeah, that's my thought also. Sorry I got dragged in to even talking to these people.

Glad that the thread is making more sense now, anyway! You were right to call the sexism out and I'm sure would have made a few people on the fb thread stop and think. We tend to overlook this sort of everyday misogyny but when one woman says, hey that's not okay, it gives other women support.

Glad to see the abusive posts towards me have been deleted as well. Misogyny should never be tolerated, which ironically was the point of the posters who are angry because of their own misunderstanding.
Note to self: linguistics is not a welcome subject here.

NiceGerbil · 11/08/2020 12:50

Oh whose reporting things?

I'm also not sure that refusing to accept that a phrase is most likely to mean X rather than Y when used in a certain context in certain parts of the UK shows a massive interest in linguistics Grin

NiceGerbil · 11/08/2020 12:51

Well you straight up told me I was a misogynist for saying that she looks like a tramp would be taken to mean she looks like a slag where I live.

Your behaviour on this thread has been bizarre, to be quite frank.

Notredamn · 11/08/2020 12:54

🤷‍♀️ the most commonly accepted meaning does mean a vagrant. I thought it was an interesting thread until certain things became obvious and they were pointed out. Obviously troll hunting is against forum rules so the mods have adjusted the thread accordingly.

NiceGerbil · 11/08/2020 12:56

According to who?

Not round here, not when said about a woman.

Why do you find regional variations in language usage so impossible to understand Grin

Notredamn · 11/08/2020 12:56

I wouldn't take it to mean that, Gerbil which is why I questioned internalised prejudices when it comes to judging women. Associating different meanings to ambiguous terminology. That's all. I didn't call you anything.

Notredamn · 11/08/2020 12:57

Because it isn't a regional thing.

NiceGerbil · 11/08/2020 12:59

Oh wow a shitload of your posts have been deleted haven't they notredamn Grin

'adjusted' lol

Notredamn · 11/08/2020 13:00

They sure have. I said the thread had been adjusted, the troll hunting comments have disappeared. Of course they have.

Wow I don't remember you troll hunting that much!

How can you state definitively that it's not a regional thing in the uk?

I'd like some proper resources to back up that statement please as it is such a bold one.

Especially as it leads to your (now repeated) accusation that I'm a raging misogynist (but only internally so of course I don't even realise it).
