"She looks like a right tramp"

On our local FB group (I know!) somebody has shared a video of a couple dealing drugs outside his front garden. She appears to be weighing out a quantity.
There's been a lot of discussion about logging it with the police, how they're a well-known problem around the area etc. And then somebody has just said, ""She looks like a right tramp".

I'm so frustrated with this comment, the subtext and the message it sends. I want to respond calmly, I don't want to let it go unaddressed, but I can't find the words.

How do you think I should respond?

@TalkingtoLangClegintheDark

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark my issue is that we didn't actually establish that.

Yes. Yes, we did.

It is very clear to most people that tramp when used for a woman is a synonym for slut; and in case it wasn’t clear, in this particular case the man who made the comment clarified that that was exactly what he meant.

How you can still claim that “we didn’t actually establish that” is beyond me.

Actually did he actually say anything at all? When questioned he fired back ‘apparently’ a word for word reply that’s also in the urban dictionary that’s written by a complete separate individual.

That’s odd. What are the chances of that?

Also it’s quite clear there has been a certain poster that’s actually a sock puppet. They haven’t posted in three years untill tonight I’m support of ‘OP’ - which is against the rules.

So no I can’t take it seriously.

Patriciawentworth your post is really interesting though. I enjoy finding out the origins of words. Your not far of the mark ( online source) says the vagabond women would likely turn to prostitution so maybe that’s where the link it... it’s also much more readily used in the US.

queenofknives · 10/08/2020 23:56

Why don't you just stop Notredamn. You are not coming across very well here. The truth is you've kept on and on, unreasonably insisting that the man who said it didn't mean what we all know he meant, and what he clarified himself that he meant. Yes, there absolutely were people on here saying it was fine (e.g. "Why do you care what a drug dealing problematic woman is called? She's a drug dealer. No insult is out of line.") and loads more people saying it doesn't mean anything misogynist, so no sexism occured. When it clearly fucking does, and did. And now you're saying it didn't even happen at all and the OP has made it up.

What's your motive here? What are you trying to achieve? I can guarantee that you haven't made any feminist less feminist, or made anyone think that people aren't casually misogynistic, or even persuaded anyone that the word 'tramp' can only mean what you say it means. You have, however, succeeded in making yourself seem a complete fool. (And where I'm from, a fool is a kind of dessert. So, you know, don't be offended.)

I've spent hours of my day today trying to make people understand that consent is important in childbirth and that men are not the priority in the delivery room, over on another thread. One woman didn't even believe her body was her own whilst pregnant- yeah I'm definitely not a feminist Hmm

What do you mean by ‘played’? Grin

A poster came on the feminism board to ask a question about the most common kind of misogyny we’ve ever seen, that of sexist fb comments. Anyone who uses fb will probably seen it about ten times today with their own eyes. It’s a hardly the duping of the century!

Notredamn your point being...?

Notredamn · 11/08/2020 00:18

My point being: that I acknowledge that :/
'Fb is full of misogyny'
'Yes I know, I've already said it is'

JKRisagryff · 11/08/2020 00:26

So you would agree then that somebody trolling about a mundane bit of sexism on fb doesn’t make for very sensational reading? I’m sure the OP had no idea she was being so controversial. The only reason the thread has gone the way it has is because it’s been derailed by people arguing about colloquial word definitions. Again not quite sure how or why a troll would engineer that but you’re obviously seeing something I’m not.

Notredamn · 11/08/2020 00:38

It's more likely the OP misunderstood, read all the posts about the more widely accepted meaning and then tacked on the bit about the man saying he definitely did mean it in a sexual-sexist way, even quoting what just so happens to be on the urban dictionary. Anyway. Even I'm bored of it now.
No thanks. I've always been on the Feminist boards and will stay. No intentions of fucking off here I'm afraid.

Oh dear, you've bolded a post that was written by someone Lang wasn't referring to. She was extremely angry and sweary (🤣) towards myself, I did ask her to clarify but she declined. How am I responsible for what others say?
Actually that was an example of exactly the kind of post I was referring to, Notredamn. Perhaps you imagined I was claiming you had said stuff like this; I wasn’t. I was and am just thoroughly pissed off with the fucking ridiculous derail that you and Lizzie have kept going on and on and on through this thread, a derail which has made it harder to discuss the everyday misogyny that OP was flagging up, and why it matters.

If you do indeed care about this kind of misogyny then it’s bloody weird that you’re putting so much effort into derailing a discussion on it.

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 11/08/2020 01:40

Btw I prefer the abbreviation Talking - “Lang” isn’t my name, it’s just a homage to a former superstar of this board, sadly no longer able to post here.

ItsLateHumpty · 11/08/2020 01:44

It’s actually irrelevant what first word the man used to describe the woman. It clearly wasn’t a complement. And it was clearly only aimed at one of the two people committing the same crime.

That one person was a woman. The FB commenter clearly felt very at ease denigrating a woman on an open platform and didn’t expect to be challenged.
That is sexism and misogyny 101 for those at the back.

FWIW I understand ‘right tramp’ to be sexually amoral, ‘tramp’ is homeless, or dirty and unkempt.
Neither is nice.

Troll hunting is frowned upon - report to MN and stay off the thread or comment as per the OP.

Also there’s a sort of agreed etiquette on FWR not to tag other posters, especially not if they’re active on the thread.

If you’d just asked me to quote, Notredamn, I would also have gone for that quote that queen provided - and there were other posters also saying or implying that misogynistic insults don’t matter when the woman’s a lowlife.

queen you nailed it a considerable way upthread:

The thing is, it's about principles. If we say that misogyny and racism and homophobia are not okay then that has to be in every circumstance and apply to everyone. Otherwise we are saying that it's okay to be racist/misogynistic/homophobic when we don't like the person and you get to decide whether that person 'deserves' the insult or not.

Very interesting, Humpty.

And isn’t it also interesting that one of the people doing lots of the troll hunting and derailing has never posted on FWR before this thread? Not in the name of LizzieBlackwell, anyway.

Partly because the incel MRA wankers always tag multiple women to piss them off. No tags unless I'm mates with you, please. TalkingtoLangClegintheDark feel free to tag me Grin
