"She looks like a right tramp"

On our local FB group (I know!) somebody has shared a video of a couple dealing drugs outside his front garden. She appears to be weighing out a quantity.
There's been a lot of discussion about logging it with the police, how they're a well-known problem around the area etc. And then somebody has just said, ""She looks like a right tramp".

I'm so frustrated with this comment, the subtext and the message it sends. I want to respond calmly, I don't want to let it go unaddressed, but I can't find the words.

How do you think I should respond?

Why do you presume that 'tramp' directed towards a woman means something sexual, Gerbil? It usually does mean homeless looking.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/08/2020 19:07

There's a difference in nuance between 'looking like a tramp' and 'looking like a right tramp'.

Notredamn · 10/08/2020 19:13

Where I live, people put or say 'right' in front of any word, to put emphasis on it.

Moranne · 10/08/2020 19:14

If you are sure he was being a sexist idiot and you were unhappy with the language call him on it. I know that can be hard but it’s the little challenges that we make that add up to changes. Thank you @Mammatino

Where I live... Heh.

Because where I live it does notredame Grin

NiceGerbil · 10/08/2020 19:26

If someone sees a woman on the street and says, she looks like a right tramp, it will invariably mean (sorry for language) a slag.

If someone says he looks like a tramp it means scruffy. More likely to be a bit of a tramp. Never would be he looks like a right tramp . I can't imagine that being said. Real tramp maybe.

TBH tramp as in rough sleeping isn't used much any more where I live as it's considered a bit rude.

People would say he/ she looks a bit rough if that's what they were implying.

There is.

And all the talk of where people live would be great in Pedants Corner or Local but in FWR I'm a bit confused as to why it's relevant since:

He was using it in a misogynist way.

The OP confirmed this.

Notredamn · 10/08/2020 19:44

See that reads to me like it could be your own prejudice about a woman's looks coming out there, Gerbil which is why I asked. Woman called a tramp= must be sexual, man called a tramp= must mean he looks like an actual tramp.

Notredamn · 10/08/2020 19:45

And yes, it is quite rude. It's pejorative language, for sure!

Here too!

NiceGerbil · 10/08/2020 19:59

Erm so reporting how words are used commonly in my area means I'm a misogynist.

Confused
DiscordandRhyme · 10/08/2020 20:01

Either it's ok to call people a slut, tramp etc or it isn't.

Just because she's a drug dealer it doesn't mean it's ok. I equally wouldn't comment on how shit a fuck I'd reckon the guy was because its not related to what they are doing. The OP is pointing out sexualising when there is no need.

'She'd give it to me but I wouldn't as she's a druggie!' - who cares about your sexual thoughts, Brian?

How many woman do you see when an article about a drug dealer or someone who committed assault 'shame he did x he'd be a right good lay otherwise.'

It's double standards.

No but continuing to talk about that instead of the actual sexist language actually used and confirmed in this case does seem a bit 'look over here! Nothing to see there!'.
Codexdivinchi · 10/08/2020 20:07

Such an interesting thread.

At first glance just by going of the OP, Him calling her a tramp wouldn’t have been sexualised to me. Just that she looked scruffy. He then went on to call her a slut - so he was using it in a sexualised way.

Where I grew up calling some one a tramp didn’t mean a misogynist comment, it means , scruffy, dirty, unkept.

As in ‘who’s just farted?’ ‘Eeeew you tramp that stinks’

Female and make fall foul to this Grin

queenofknives · 10/08/2020 20:08
You're being obtuse, queen. If you want to look at it like that, you're meaning a verb so that wouldn't make sense.
I was just trying to inject a little levity into Pedants' Corner! Grin

NiceGerbil · 10/08/2020 20:13

The original language was sexist that's the whole point.

The numbers of people giving the guy the benefit of the doubt even though op knew full well how he meant it, and then he confirmed it, is weird.

chubbyhotchoc · 10/08/2020 20:16

Where I come from 'tramp' is used interchangeably with 'scruff'. It's not necessarily sexist. It just means someone who looks rough. I couldn't get worked up about this.

Notredamn · 10/08/2020 20:31

Errr....I'm not giving him the benefit of the doubt. I said before he was a weirdo. Of course it's wrong!

Notredamn · 10/08/2020 20:33

It's not pedants corner though queen and you used a verb, which wouldn't make sense at all in the context...I might as well own being called a pedant! Been called worse 😂

I thought his choice was word was interesting. Soz.

I know, it was just silly. You can certainly use it as a noun though (went for a tramp through the woods) so in that respect it wasn't wrong. I was just being silly, though. No offence intended :)

Notredamn · 10/08/2020 20:50

But can a person be called a tramp through a forest clearing....
I will stop now Grin

LizzieBlackwell · 10/08/2020 20:52
Grin
JKRisagryff · 10/08/2020 20:55

Interested to know whether the people who’ve said you can call drug dealers whatever insult you want and who cares there’s bigger issues going on etc. would class themselves as feminists? As that is the opposite of feminism to say misogynistic language can be used as long as a female is involved in criminal activity.

I’m genuinely curious, have you just wandered onto the FWR board to debate or are you someone who thinks of themselves as a feminist?

queenofknives · 10/08/2020 20:56

I don't know... I sometimes think of myself as a lovely gentle breeze on the wings of a butterfly flitting over a meadow of wildflowers GrinGrinGrin
