Lush Edinburgh say they wouldn't serve anyone in "woman" T-shirt

Apparently some stickers found their way onto the Lush Edinburgh storefront causing horror and consternation on Princes St this morning. They are too awful to be shared, obviously, but clearly they carried some message of hateful bigotry - or biological fact as it used to be known.

Anyway, staff on the thread are letting it be known that anyone wearing a T-shirt carrying the dictionary definition of a woman would not be served - haven't seen a comment on what would happen if it said 'I ❤️ JKR'. Not sure how legal that is.

@SophocIestheFox

Dammit, I don’t have any truck with the thrush bombs side of the business, but ultrabland face wash and skindrink moisturiser are the only things that my sensitive skin will tolerate. Anyone any ideas for alternatives?
Do you have any problems with oils such as coconut or almond? They’re as good as any moisturiser I’ve ever used.
DrinkFeckArseGirls · 04/08/2020 07:56

By really I mean twice for a gift and once 15 years ago for me.

nepeta · 04/08/2020 07:56

So does anyone know what the transphobic messages were? Or is it not revealed at al? It should matter if they are truly ghastly hate messages or, say, I love JKR stickers.

HappyPunky · 04/08/2020 07:58

I used to spend loads at lush as I have very sensitive skin.
I've found sukin a good alternative to their facial skin care so I don't need to buy theirs anymore.

Bloomburger · 04/08/2020 08:00

Got a bit upset thinking title said Hush then read again and saw it was Lush and thought thank God, hate their smelly shite and it's not the first time they've made appealing decisions with regards to PR and advertising.

SophocIestheFox · 04/08/2020 08:03

Coconut oil makes me break out, delerium, never tried almond, though.

Will have a look at sukin.

hullooni · 04/08/2020 08:03

Oooh I'm in Edinburgh. I wonder if I could dress the kids up in harry potter gear and take them to browse the bath bombs 😂

Also is JKR still living in Edinburgh? Imagine JKR walking into the store wearing an I ❤️ JKR T-shirt? Is it transphobic to love yourself, I wonder?

Skyliner001 · 04/08/2020 08:06

Love Lush stuff 💙❤️💛

MistressMounthaven · 04/08/2020 08:09

I wonder if I could wear a '60 year old woman' t shirt - would that be ageism?

BaronessWrongCrowd · 04/08/2020 08:10

Hope you can keep them going the Skyliner. Meanwhile the rest of us have found much nicer, less noxious alternatives that are better for our skin Wink

Skyliner001 · 04/08/2020 08:15

Thanks 😊

Lordamighty · 04/08/2020 08:16

Lush UK are getting support on that thread from Richard Id rather be a pervert than a Terf on that thread. That must be heartening for them. Even the Green Party couldn’t tolerate him.

Another thing that Lush ought to be aware of is that twitter isn't real life. Support from a screeching minority doesn't translate into everyone agreeing with them outside of the twitter bubble.
If you stopped people on the street and explained the problem here, most people would not agree with Lush's stance on this. I think that at present, most people aren't aware of what is being done to women here or the consequences for us, since most people aren't on twitter and aren't seeing the sort of comments women like JKR receive. They are getting their info from mainstream media which has also forgotten that twitter doesn't reflect what public opinion would be if truthfully informed.

teawamutu · 04/08/2020 08:35

@Maduixa

I used to love them in the '90s. The only one of their products that survived their greedy price skyjacking for me was Sea Salt scrub, and I've since found a local supermarket sub for a fraction of the price.

Even after their bath products went £-shaped, I still liked their perfumes. Had time to kill at the Sauchiehall Street shop (Glasgow) last summer and sniffed all their frags, solid and liquid. They've all been replaced or reformulated, and none are unique or even nice. Even my once-beloved Kerbside Violet is now boring and overly sweet/chemical.

LUSH have the same issue as The Body Shop, IMO - what made them brilliant in the '90s is now commonplace, and their endless quest to raise prices but lower quality to increase the product margin ruins their signature quirky appeal. People have choices, and how many women would choose overpriced misogyny if it doesn't even smell amazing?

Agree completely - my Lush-only policy ebbed away the bigger, more expensive and corporate they got.

(The only thing I really miss is the Sea Salt scrub - please tell me more...?)
@CuriousaboutSamphire I may see you there Wink
And me! We could form a possee (is that the right spelling? I’ve never written that word before). I couldn’t stay long though - the smell gives me a headache. 🤕

fatblackcatspaw · 04/08/2020 08:47

on the facebook of Lush Edinburgh someone also posted a small piece about Lush's founder's daughter induging in Islamophobia in one of their London shops ....

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 04/08/2020 08:47

@AnotherLass

"they lost me at the police campaign"

Because you think that it is totally fine for undercover cops to have CHILDREN with women they have deceived into fake long term relationships, in order to get information on some environmental activists?

Interesting brand of feminism you have there, given that the police spies only did this abusive shit to women. No men got to experience the joys of state sanctioned rape by deception. But nothing misogynistic was going on there at all. No siree

That’s interesting youve extrapolated out

Youve no idea of my opinion on that matter

Actually its not interesting...

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/08/2020 08:49

There's no such thing as rape by deception. Erm, I am happy to say you are utterly wrong in that!

www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/rape-and-sexual-offences-chapter-3-consent

Sexual Offences Act 1956
The Sexual offences Act 1956 contains no statutory definition of 'consent'. Juries must be told that the word should be given its ordinary meaning, and that there is a difference between 'consent' and 'submission'.

Lack of consent may be demonstrated by:

 • The complainant's assertion of force or threats;
 • Evidence that by reason of drink, drugs, sleep, age or mental disability the complainant was unaware of what was occurring and/ or incapable of giving valid consent; or
 • Evidence that the complainant was deceived as to the identity of the person with whom (s)he had intercourse.

Do you need anyone more knowledgeable than the CPS to tell you what consitutues rape?

SerenityNowwwww · 04/08/2020 08:51

Would a Wonder Woman T-shirt count?

VinylDetective · 04/08/2020 08:59

Damn, I love their purple shampoo. Now I’ll have to find an alternative. Off to S&B ...

fatblackcatspaw · 04/08/2020 09:03

OOOH UPDATE I HAVE A PICTURE OF THE HORRIFIC TRANSPHOBIC STICKER !!!

fatblackcatspaw · 04/08/2020 09:04

it says Keep Prisons Single Sex.... I mean all those Lush staff will need months and months ouf counselling now

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 04/08/2020 09:04

There are lots of cottage industries making lovely soaps and lotions and the like, from ethically sourced ingredients. I used to like Lush products a couple of decades ago, but they discontinued the stuff I liked and hiked the prices up the wazoo.

I’ve discovered local companies making lovely things for lower cost and none of the virtue signalling.
