Lush Edinburgh say they wouldn't serve anyone in "woman" T-shirt

Apparently some stickers found their way onto the Lush Edinburgh storefront causing horror and consternation on Princes St this morning. They are too awful to be shared, obviously, but clearly they carried some message of hateful bigotry - or biological fact as it used to be known.

Anyway, staff on the thread are letting it be known that anyone wearing a T-shirt carrying the dictionary definition of a woman would not be served - haven't seen a comment on what would happen if it said 'I ❤️ JKR'. Not sure how legal that is.

No, no beard.

There is a flowery shirt though.

[quote blurpityblurp]They have a history of forcing women female vagina-having staff into sexually abusive work situations.

I bought stuff from Lush. I don't think I'll ever stomach doing so again and I only know about this due to their stance today.

I hope they don't mind doing without my money.

CasuallyMasculine · 03/08/2020 23:05

It’s such a shame Lush have disappeared up their own backsides in an effort to be woke.

In the old days when they were Cosmetics To Go they were totally unique, witty, accessible, and their products were amazing.

Tragic, really.

Smallsteps88 · 03/08/2020 23:06

and I only know about this due to their stance today.

Same! As well as other stuff that has been posted both here and on their own post. Lots of light being shone on Lush today!

Thisismytimetoshine · 03/08/2020 23:07

Same as Body Shop, really. What is it with these gobshites?

Totickleamockingbird · 03/08/2020 23:13

Well, I will take my custom elsewhere.

goldfinchfan · 03/08/2020 23:14

Yet their statement of their ethics on their website states EveryOne is Welcome!

so they are also Liars

womanaf · 03/08/2020 23:14

I’m imagining going to lush, picking up 83 sparkly thrush balls, letting them run it all through the till before producing my I❤️JKR tote to carry it away in and watching cashier have an attack of the vapours.

Ideally I’d be able to shoulder in some kind of Real Life variation on the Pretty Woman gif that’s all over Twitter too. ‘You work on commission. Big mistake.’

Oooh I have a woman AHF tote!

Sales assistant : “Do you need a bag today?”

Me: Smile

jakeyboy1 · 03/08/2020 23:19

My dad read one of the signs in their window the other day about everything not allowed in their stores. Concluded they don't want people to actually spend money with them.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 03/08/2020 23:25

an ASBO against the smell.

Grin Absolutely love it. I'd join for a class action against them polluting the high street with their noxious fumes.

Thisismytimetoshine · 03/08/2020 23:25

@goldfinchfan

Even stating this is a nonsense. They're a shop, they need people to buy their shit. The benefits to being welcomed in are all theirs. Doubly so in their case because of the extreme shiteness of their products,
MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 03/08/2020 23:26

I think that no shop has to serve a customer, but that's okay with me because I won't be buying any more of their expensive products.
The problem Lush has is the same one as Body Shop, in that they don't sell anything unique or that a customer really needs. There are plenty of alternative products on the market which will fulfill requirements. Thus Lush (and BS) should be careful not to alienate customers. Particularly during a pandemic, when retail is on its arse.

NewNewt · 03/08/2020 23:27

That's fine with me. I cant go within a metre if a Lush shop without getting a blinding headache so no concern here.

JellyfishandShells · 03/08/2020 23:29

How big is the trans market to them anyway ? - there can only be a limited amount of fantasy girly self care bath bomb sessions to cater for. The rest of their market is 10 year old girls, going by the one I passed today and pocket money isn’t limitless.

AnotherLass · 03/08/2020 23:32

"they lost me at the police campaign"

Because you think that it is totally fine for undercover cops to have CHILDREN with women they have deceived into fake long term relationships, in order to get information on some environmental activists?

Interesting brand of feminism you have there, given that the police spies only did this abusive shit to women. No men got to experience the joys of state sanctioned rape by deception. But nothing misogynistic was going on there at all. No siree

Thisismytimetoshine · 03/08/2020 23:37

State sanctioned rape by deception Hmm. There's no such thing as rape by deception.

SerenityNowwwww · 03/08/2020 23:46

What does that have to do with stinky soap?

FreezerBird · 03/08/2020 23:46

CousinKrispy
Any recommendations for a good shampoo bar from another supplier? I'm happy to have an excuse to avoid Lush anyway.

I use bomb cosmetics for shampoo bars, and they also do solid deodorant I think. When Lush had their police campaign, bomb cosmetics produced a bath bomb the profits from which went to police charities.

NiceGerbil · 04/08/2020 00:04

'On their Facebook post they said they wouldn't serve a woman wearing a t-shirt that says Woman - noun - biological adult human female.'

The link in the op doesn't specify that, and I can't be bothered to read all the comments.

Anyone got a link to them being that specific?

Let's not derail the thread about the police thing. The question is, why is a soap company taking these political positions? With the body shop Anita roddick had a vision and a stance about animal exploitation etc in the products sold. Makes sense.

Why is a soap company wading into what the police did in a long standing undercover operation? Why are they diving into identity politics?

My guess is that they think it will appeal to their core customers.

But it's mindless wokism. What in their business model etc does anything tangible about these things?

EstuaryBird · 04/08/2020 00:09

I want to try this....if I can just find a way to tolerate the stench for a few minutes.

Wear the T shirt and when they refuse to serve me I shall become extremely offended because I self identify as a Woman and I wear the T shirt because it makes me feel proud and strong and it’s my way of Proclaiming and Owning my identity.

The fact that I am a woman is irrelevant because I can be whoever I choose to be and I choose to be a woman. How very dare they question my chosen identity.

NiceGerbil · 04/08/2020 00:14

Just been looking at their website

' Our ability to create a warm and welcoming home, a safe environment where difference is accepted and fostered, is maybe our single greatest strength. We have attracted minorities who have come to us as a refuge from prejudice, bullying or marginalisation. This wide and diverse group all find a place in the tapestry of Lush where we can forge a role that has personal value and meaning, whilst contributing to the whole.'

That's rather overblown for a soap company isn't it?

There also isn't much on what they are doing to help anything, aside from a bunch of words.

If anyone can point me to where they said they would not allow the definition of woman in the shop I'd be grateful.
