Lush Edinburgh say they wouldn't serve anyone in "woman" T-shirt

Apparently some stickers found their way onto the Lush Edinburgh storefront causing horror and consternation on Princes St this morning. They are too awful to be shared, obviously, but clearly they carried some message of hateful bigotry - or biological fact as it used to be known.

Anyway, staff on the thread are letting it be known that anyone wearing a T-shirt carrying the dictionary definition of a woman would not be served - haven't seen a comment on what would happen if it said 'I ❤️ JKR'. Not sure how legal that is.

It is interesting how rapidly businesses have come to believe that discrimination against women on the basis of sex is perfectly legal.

@Apollo440

So my gender critical wheelchair bound friend rocks up in an adult human female tshirt they'd refuse to serve her. It's almost worth the trip.
This needs to happen.

A “misogynists welcome” sticker on their door would be appropriate too.

@CuriousaboutSamphire

Oh god I hope this response is real

LUSH UK I’m coming for you. Prepare to weep

So do I
SerenityNowwwww · 03/08/2020 21:20

I did see a lush store on twitter with a poster in the window that said something along the lines of ‘no Covid, no bigots, no Transphobes’. Desire me.

DryHeave · 03/08/2020 21:21

They’ve had those signs in the windows in shops in the south for a couple of weeks. Opportunistic jumping on stickering to amplify their marketing campaign.

SerenityNowwwww · 03/08/2020 21:23

Oh same message! The one I saw looked like someone had typed it up and stuck it in the window with sellotape. The one near me is all ‘black trans lives matter’ homemade posters.

mummmy2017 · 03/08/2020 21:23

I just can't make myself pay £5 to have a bath bomb.
So easy to boycott.

Herja · 03/08/2020 21:23

I might put some stickers up in Lush next time I'm in town...

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 03/08/2020 21:28

Yeah, on the boycott scale this is actually even lower than Flora, and I wouldn't use Flora to grease my squeaky bicycle.

Lordamighty · 03/08/2020 21:31

I’d love to boycott them but I don’t buy their overpriced stinking products in the first place.

StillNotAGirl · 03/08/2020 21:40

Would they serve someone wearing a man definition tee-shirt I wonder?

And would it make a difference whether it was a man or a woman wearing said tee-shirt?

Hmm
Maduixa · 03/08/2020 21:41

I used to love them in the '90s. The only one of their products that survived their greedy price skyjacking for me was Sea Salt scrub, and I've since found a local supermarket sub for a fraction of the price.

Even after their bath products went £-shaped, I still liked their perfumes. Had time to kill at the Sauchiehall Street shop (Glasgow) last summer and sniffed all their frags, solid and liquid. They've all been replaced or reformulated, and none are unique or even nice. Even my once-beloved Kerbside Violet is now boring and overly sweet/chemical.

LUSH have the same issue as The Body Shop, IMO - what made them brilliant in the '90s is now commonplace, and their endless quest to raise prices but lower quality to increase the product margin ruins their signature quirky appeal. People have choices, and how many women would choose overpriced misogyny if it doesn't even smell amazing?

thereplycamefromanchorage · 03/08/2020 21:43

Wow, can't believe Lush are so keen to deter customers. Am loving some of the responses on FB.

TheChampagneGalop · 03/08/2020 21:45

Their FB header says "All are welcome. Always"
Unless you wear one of those woman t-shirts, that's just beyond the pale.

Thisismytimetoshine · 03/08/2020 21:46

I've just had a brief scroll through the replies on that Facebook post.

Lot's of wide eyed "Gosh, what a nasty response to your fabulous sign, hope you guys are safe!" nonsense.
I wish I could believe they're taking the piss...
What is this safe shite, does the word mean something quite different now?!

Smallsteps88 · 03/08/2020 21:53

I wonder who buys most of their sickening sparkly thrush balls. Would it be..... women? 🤔 interesting stance to take in the face of an imminent recession.

Deliriumoftheendless · 03/08/2020 21:55

@CousinKrispy

Any recommendations for a good shampoo bar from another supplier? I'm happy to have an excuse to avoid Lush anyway.
I can’t vouch for them, as I make my own bath products, but my local eco shop stocks them and they have some lovely stuff.

Do does anyone based on Edinburgh have a male friend, family member, spouse etc

Who is prepared to put on some eyeliner/ and preferably a skirt or some glitter or something

And wear an adult human Female t-shirt, bag or something into the Edinburgh store?

My guess is they would NOT get questioned in any way whatsoever.

Smallsteps88 · 03/08/2020 22:00

I was just pondering that @NiceGerbil. I bet a trans person wearing that wouldn’t be refused service.

NiceGerbil · 03/08/2020 22:02

Point 2.

I have always found lush v pongy. And their stuff overpriced. And I have sensitive skin/ a bit of ezcema. And while I understand that hiding in the bathroom is a bit of peace for a lot of women, it's a poor substitute to actual time to yourself.

The sale of female grooming as pampering, relaxation is shit tbh but that's another thread.

Lush cater to femininity. So this stance is in line with their thinking.

GC women say that gender stereotypes are restrictive. Of course many of us conform to some of them. But generally, there should be more freedom.

Lush are all about sterotypes. That is what their product is for.

So, no surprise really.

ThatLibraryMiss · 03/08/2020 22:03

@StandUpStraight

The phrase “educate yourself” is rapidly becoming one of the nastiest in the English language. Putting “love and respect” after it does not mitigate its authoritarian arrogance either - it makes it worse. Who do they think they are to tell their customers to go educate themselves?!
"Educate yourself" is so patronising. It says, "Well, you're wrong, dear, but you don't know any different. When you learn a bit more you'll understand how silly you're being. It's not difficult; I'm sure you can do it if you try."
CountreeGurl · 03/08/2020 22:05

I think it is great to see a business standing up for what it believes in. If you don't like it don't shop there, simple.

MrsKeats · 03/08/2020 22:06

It's another business I've not been shopping with for a few years.
The bloody arrogance of them.
