Lush Edinburgh say they wouldn't serve anyone in "woman" T-shirt

Apparently some stickers found their way onto the Lush Edinburgh storefront causing horror and consternation on Princes St this morning. They are too awful to be shared, obviously, but clearly they carried some message of hateful bigotry - or biological fact as it used to be known.

Anyway, staff on the thread are letting it be known that anyone wearing a T-shirt carrying the dictionary definition of a woman would not be served - haven't seen a comment on what would happen if it said 'I ❤️ JKR'. Not sure how legal that is.

I have to say that this all bothers me because it's the poor shop floor staff having to police and manage this.
I'd happily protest, but it's never to the right people. The staff may or may not agree with their shops policy, and it's not a nice position to be in Id imagine.

lowlandLucky · 04/08/2020 16:23

I would say "cancel" Lush but i am a mere middle aged woman ( yes a woman) who hasn't a clue what it means or how to do it

SerenityNowwwww · 04/08/2020 16:23

The ‘poor floor staff’? Have you met some of them? They often have the vibe of stage school kids.

All the nasty stories of virtually naked staff (getting groped, propositioned and sexually assaulted by creepy customers) is just mind boggling. Against sexism my arse.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 04/08/2020 16:23

Wow, it's almost like they thought that silly sign would be a few easy-won woke points, and it's turned out to not go down so well so they've immediately backed away from it. Silly arses don't even have the courage of their convictions.

SerenityNowwwww · 04/08/2020 16:24

Anyone near Edinburgh want to take a wee look?

bishopgiggles · 04/08/2020 16:28

Could you wear a t-shirt that said woman = adult human anyone, but cover up the last word with a hoody so you get thrown out for being inclusive?

SerenityNowwwww · 04/08/2020 16:28

Wear your ‘woman’ T-shirt back to front and have a laugh when you leave the store (empty handed)

PotholeParadise · 04/08/2020 16:29

I don't see Lush losing any money over this, at all.

BaronessWrongCrowd · 04/08/2020 16:29

Possibly someone higher up pointed out that what they proposed to do was in fact illegal.
Or they realised that alienating your core market with sexist bilge and virtue signalling wasn't a good business model.

Shame about the screenshots which I hope are bring circulated far and wide.

northstars · 04/08/2020 16:30

You’d think they would learn from Body Shop. Oh well. Smile

I think most people know what a bunch of twits they are from past exploits so they are probably already sinking slowly like the titanic, and this is just desperate attempt to attract attention.
Soubriquet · 04/08/2020 16:33

So because they didn’t get 100% “you go girl! So right. I can’t believe anyone would disagree” they have removed it?

I bet they didn’t like the fact people bought up the kiss thing either

SerenityNowwwww · 04/08/2020 16:34

Remind us - the kiss thing? Was that getting staff to go around wearing an apron (only) with tits hanging out with side of the top and arses out the back?

Soubriquet · 04/08/2020 16:37

No, they had to wear long white T- shirts and get as many kisses as possible within 12 hours on their shirt to promote their lip stick

But men were taking advantage and were kissing women’s breasts and privates too

Winesalot · 04/08/2020 16:41

No. The kiss thing was an attempt at a Guinness world record for most kisses in lipstick. Female workers wore white t-shirts and people would put on lip colour and kiss the shirt. Of course, it was voluntary (except young women felt they could not refuse to participate) and a prize for most lip marks.

And of course, the kissing got out of hand as one would expect. Great protection of female staff and very progressive for women's rights I am sure!

Ugh Sad this company just gets better and better.
DialSquare · 04/08/2020 16:45

Men taking advantage? Never!

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 04/08/2020 16:45

Wonder how they plan to react to a lesbian definition T-shirt...

Publicly seeking numpties

SerenityNowwwww · 04/08/2020 16:50

I’ve seen photos of staff wearing only a black apron (tape over nipples on show on them ( and bare backsides peeking out the back.

Winesalot · 04/08/2020 16:53

Serenity

I believe that was 'announcing' that they were going wrapper free or plastic free or something.... could be wrong.

The women were given the option to wear nothing but an apron to work.

Soubriquet · 04/08/2020 16:55

They were given the option....but it was heavily implied that they had to

Winesalot · 04/08/2020 16:58

To be fair, I have no idea.

However, I did read an account of the kissing day fiasco and the young woman who wrote a letter about it mentioned that they definitely did not feel that they wanted to be 'singled out' by not joining in.

I think that whoever has been doing their PR/marketing has been doing a very shoddy job of it. Why on earth would you put women in such vulnerable positions and call this empowerment. shame!

Have Body Shop lost money since their Twitter nonsense do you know?
SerenityNowwwww · 04/08/2020 17:05

Well they certainly have from me! We all used to get smellies and toiletries from them.
